Centaurworld is an animated musical series on Netflix.

Summary

A hardened war horse is transported to a land inhabited by silly, singing centaurs of all shapes and sizes.

Why It’s a Hootenanny

  1. The series has a very interesting multiversal travel plot as it deals with the main character, Horse getting trapped in another world, Centaurworld.
  2. There’s typically 3-5 songs per episode and they’re often short and very fun to listen to. Other songs like “Rider’s Lullaby” and “Welcome to the Bay” are very soothing.
  3. Many likable characters such as Wammawink, Glendale, Horse, and Durpleton.
  4. The moletaurs being lawyers and judges is very clever.
  5. All the main characters have very heart wrenching backstories.
    • Wammawink lost her parents to war and that’s why she’s so overprotective and overbearing to her friends.
    • Ched is racist to horses because the horsetaurs bullied him when he was a chick.
    • Durpleton has daddy issues because he was neglected by his father as a child.
    • Glendale was a thief because she was homeless and always hungry.
  6. Beautiful and colorful animation, the animation styles always change jumping between the real world and the Centaurworld.
  7. Waterbaby is a very entertaining character.
  8. Wammawink simping over mermen is very relatable.
  9. The series finale, The Last Lullaby was very heart wrenching.
  10. LGBTQ+ themes are subtly sprinkled in such as Zulius and Spendib being heavily implied to be dating in Last Lullaby.
  11. The centaurs not looking like traditional centaurs is very clever.

Bad Qualities

  1. Season 2 had a very noticeable downgrade in quality.
    • The animation got cheaper as some episode used stock photos for some objects instead of drawing them like in season 1. It came off as very jarring.
    • Fans did not like the birdtaurs because they were just portrayal of toxic and annoying fans. Their debut episode was not very enjoyable due to how meta it was.
    • Speaking of the birdtaurs, they also had “message birds” which was just newborn chicks that broke out of eggs and repeat what the thrower said. Fans found them disgusting because they were drawn realistically and newborn animals often don’t look appealing. However, the staff revealed the message birds are an analog of X/Twitter because how immature and toxic most users can be on the platform, as they’re acting like newborn babies in their eyes.
    • Fans grew tired of the moletaur, Comfortable Doug as he appeared too much.
    • Some fans even found Durpleton “raising” an injured middle-aged Minotaur he named “Stabby” disgusting because he treated the character like a baby. It also leans on fetish territory.
  2. Some fans were bothered by the main characters, Horse and Rider not having actual names but instead just being called the former.
  3. The sequence of “Legend of Flat Dallas” during Last Lullaby disgusted some fans because at some point, Comfortable Doug had the mini clones of the centaurs spinning around his nipples.
  4. Speaking of Comfortable Doug, the closeups of his face having holes where his eye sockets would be is just too disgusting to look at.
  5. The Whaletaur borders on uncanny valley territory because she just looks like a realistic whale wearing lipstick and a wig.
  6. Some unnecessary toilet humor:
    • Two episodes (although clever) feature the main characters having to use “the tickle bye-bye zone” which is a euphemism for having to urinate.
    • Durpleton complaining his fluctuance is “mean to [him]” and even singing a whole song about it. Which was completely unnecessary.
    • Horse giving out a long loud fart after laying inside of the Nowhere King’s head space in Last Lullaby.
