Cross Country is the eighth episode of Worst Year of My Life Again

Plot

Alex and the students compete in a cross-country race to win, even if he has to cheat.

Why It Deserves a Detention For Cheating

  1. Alex King is unlikable to the point that he has to cheat in the cross-country race, even though Maddy tells him that he is not allowed to do so. Sure Alex is unlikable in other episodes, but his actions there come out as an accident not intentional.
  2. In the opening scene, Samantha King attempts to get a chocolate bar in the box, but Alex somehow gets it first, thus calling him a slug while telling him that there is a cross-country race.
  3. Alex puts a cast on his throat so that he can pretend that he has an injury, proving his obliviousness.
  4. Before the cross-country race starts, he starts stretching at the back of the starting line, which makes him a complete idiot.
  5. He and Simon cheat by going on a bus during the race, but the officer of the public transport authority stops both of them because they used up all three tickets for bus stops. However, he lied that one of them was used by Samantha, thus making him unreliable towards the warden. Alex attempts to pay the warden, but the latter tells him that he is bribing him. This causes the three of them to ride the bus to get back to the race before Alex and Simon lose.
  6. Both Alex and Simon steal the ribbons from Maddy because they see Troy trailing them, which is mean-spirited. After, both of them start fighting each other for the sake of reaching the finish line, but Troy jumps on them after both of their trip on the road, causing the latter to win the race.
  7. On his second August, he attempts to cross the road, but there is a detour due to him changing his timeline from his first August, according to Maddie, thus making this scene a filler. He talked to the firefighters, but they decided to wash him up for stepping on a wet road, which proves their obliviousness like what Alex did earlier.
  8. After Alex finishes the line last, Norris tells him that he still has to go to detention, despite other students not getting the ribbons, though they got the ribbons offscreen before Alex did, and mockingly talks about detours. In the end, it is revealed that Toby and Nicola won the cross-country race.
  9. Both Parker and Howe do not serve any purpose in this episode.
  10. Bad Moral: It is okay to cheat in a race, which is bad considering that they would put them into trouble.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Simon, Maddy, and Alex's parents are the only likable characters in this episode.
  2. Principal Norris did punish Alex for cheating and for mockingly talking about the detour, causing him to go to detention, which is satisfying.
  3. The scene where Maddy helps Alex in the cross-country race is the only good scene.

Trivia

  • The scene where Alex and Simon see the finish line before Troy crosses it first would be inspired by Fall Guys Season 6 Cinematic Trailer, especially at the end of that cinematic trailer.
