Deadpool 2 is a superhero black comedy film based on the Marvel Comics character Deadpool, distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is the sequel to Deadpool.
Plot
The film begins with Deadpool sitting on top of barrels of oil, those barrels explode and Deadpool's body parts fly all over the place... wait, what? Okay, let's try that again...
Deadpool is now a hitman killing evil-doers all over the world. It is Wade Wilson and Vanessa's anniversary, Deadpool gives Vanessa a skeeball token made out of pure bullet-proof metal as a present which symbolises their first date while Vanessa announces that she wants to have a child which Wade quickly agrees to, Vanessa feels that "children makes us better". Suddenly a group of thugs attack and a stray bullet kills Vanessa, sending Deadpool into a severe depression that culminates with him attempting to commit suicide by blowing up the barrels of oil.
Wade finds himself in Limbo with Vanessa sitting in the afterlife, however, he can't reach her because he's still an unkillable regenerating mutant so his suicide attempt failed. Instead, Vanessa suggests Wade he should try to find a new purpose in his life. Colossus picks up Deadpool's dismembered pieces and takes him to the X-Men mansion for him to recover.
Deadpool begrudgingly joins the X-Men trying to find his new purpose in life, much to the dismay of everyone in the mansion except for Colossus. Deadpool's first mission is to calm down a mutant teenager who's causing a ruckus at an orphanage. The teenager is Russel Collins, his power is generating fire blasts out of his hand; Russel wants to be a superhero and call himself "Firefist" but no one takes him seriously because he's a short fat kid.
Deadpool quickly figures out that the orphanage director is abusive towards Russel and defends the kid, by shooting at the orphanage staff. Colossus tries to stop Deadpool but the struggle results with both Deadpool and Firefist getting captured, both are given collars that negate their Mutant powers and are taken to a special prison. In prison, Russel tries to befriend Wade but with Wade's mutation negated his cancer is quickly starting to take over and Wade just wants to die for real, so he suggests Russel instead to look for the biggest dude in the prison and befriend that guy instead.
Meanwhile, cyborg mutant soldier Cable comes from the future ala Terminator planning to kill someone to change the past, totally not a rip-off. Cable raids the prison and attempts to kill Russel, Wade fights off Cable and breaks free from his collar, reactivating his mutation. Wade is unable to defeat Cable but does force him to retreat and escapes the prison. Cable, however, took the Skee-ball token in the middle of the fight. Wade remembers Vanessa's words about children and decides that his new purpose is to protect Russel. In the middle of the chaos, Russel follows Wade's advice and befriends the biggest thug in prison.
Back home, Deadpool and Weasel discuss how the prisoners are going to be transferred to another prison and how Cable is likely to strike again. Knowing he can't defeat Cable alone, Deadpool decides to form his own superhero team because every superhero movie franchise has to do that these days. Among the recruits are Bedlam, who can control electricity, Shatterstock, who claims to be an alien, the invisible Vanisher, who might be absent(?), Domino, who has "super luck" though Deadpool doesn't think that's a power, Zeitgeist, who spits acid vomit, and Peter W., an ordinary guy with no powers that Deadpool hired anyways. Deadpool names the new team "X-Force", which totally isn't a knock off X-Men.
X-Force plans to intercept the transport vehicle carrying the prisoners, rescue Russel, and fend off Cable. The team jumps off a helicopter towards the vehicle but all of them except Deadpool and Domino die horrifically, so much for a superhero team movie. Cable attacks the transport vehicle and using her super luck, Domino is able to hijack the vehicle and fend off Cable until Deadpool arrives and fights the cyborg. In the middle of the fight, Russel escapes and calls his big friend, who destroys the entire vehicle and the highway with a single punch. Deadpool, Cable, and Domino emerge from the rubble to find none other than the Juggernaut. Juggernaut literally rips Deadpool in half with his bare hands and leaves with Firefist.
Domino takes Deadpool's severed half to safety so he can regrow his legs, which is utterly disgusting. Cable appears and explains why he's trying to kill Russel; Russel is planning to get revenge on the orphanage director by killing him. However, Russel enjoys that kill so much that slowly but surely, he'll become a serial killer and eventually Firefist murdered Cable's family. Cable is trying to stop Russel before he truly becomes Firefist but with Juggernaut on Russel's side now, Cable needs Deadpool and Domino to help him. Deadpool agrees but he insists on not killing Russel. Instead, they'll convince him to spare the director so Firefist doesn't become a serial killer. Deadpool asks Colossus for help but Colossus refuses to, still disappointed at Wade.
Cable, Deadpool, and Domino make it to the orphanage only to find Russel and Juggernaut already there. Domino points out she grew in that same orphanage and plans to rescue the other mutant kids. Deadpool and Cable try to fight Juggernaut but are overpowered, and Russel is making his way towards the director. Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead appear after all and fight the Juggernaut while Deadpool and Cable reach Russel just in time to stop him from killing the director. Juggernaut is defeated but Russel refuses to listen and Cable runs out of patience and prepares to shoot him. Desperate, Deadpool puts on a mutant-restriction collar and takes a fatal shot for Russel. With his regenerating powers deactivated, Wade won't survive.
Seeing Deadpool sacrifice himself to save him, Russel calms down and Cable realizes the future has been saved but everyone mourns as Deadpool is slowly dying. Wade finds himself in the afterlife once more and this time he can reach Vanessa, but at the very last second, he is being pulled away again. Cable uses his time travel device to return to the moment right before the fight against Juggernaut began and covertly puts the bullet-proof Skee-ball token into Deadpool's suit. The events repeat themselves but this time, Deadpool survives the shot because the token caught the bullet. Deadpool realizes Cable has time-travelled to save his life but that means Cable is now stuck in the present. Still, Russel has decided not to kill the orphanage director.
Deadpool, Colossus, Negasonic, Domino, Cable, and Firefist all walk away triumphantly. It turns out there really was an X-Force team-up, after all.
In the post-credits scene, Deadpool uses Cable's repaired time travel device to go back and undo Vanessa's death, stop Peter W. from dying, shoot his humanoid mouth sewn shutted counterpart from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, then kill Ryan Reynolds to prevent him for reading the script of 2011's Green Lantern movie.
Why It's On Goddamn Fire
- Excellent and outlandish humor, with very crude jokes that take direct jabs at other modern superheroes, like Wolverine, Batman, and Green Lantern.
- Ryan Reynolds's returning performance as Deadpool is fantastic as usual. This time Deadpool has more character and conflict while still keeping his irresponsibility and fourth-wall-breaking sense of humor.
- It has more heart than the first, which makes it even more faithful to the source material.
- The action scenes are very kinetic and fluid. Swords, fists and superpowers pack a punch with every hit.
- Fantastic special effects. For example, Cable and the fully-CGI Colossus.
- The marketing for the film was amazing, fitting into Deadpool's character very well and playing a big prank on the viewers with Peter W.
- While the first Deadpool movie parodied the generic superhero origin story, this one parodies the typical "Hero needs new allies" story.
- Subverts many superhero tropes in modern movies.
- The film fits nicely into today's modern superhero team-up films like Avengers: Infinity War, with its very own X-Force.
- Cable is a freaking awesome character who is sent back in time to prevent his wife and daughter from certain deaths at the hands of a murderous mutant, Firefist.
- Domino is badass and entertaining.
- Juggernaut is an awesome villain who is now a big bulky brute rather than an armored mutant wrestler from X-Men The Last Stand. He's funny, but that thankfully doesn't make him any less intimidating as a villain. Like the comics, the Juggernaut is related to Charles Xavier/Professor X.
- Firefist is an amazing character who goes through a lot of character development.
- Negasonic Teenage Warhead was played by an actual openly LGBT actress (Brianna Hildebrand).
- One of the best and most hilarious post-credits scenes in any superhero movie of all time. He even kills off his ill-fated version from X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds for working on Green Lantern. In the unrated cut, he kills a baby Hitler.
- Amazing soundtrack that fits very well.
- It is considered the last great movie in the X-Men film series by Fox. Not counting the Deadpool movies, the last great one would have been Logan and not counting the Wolverine solos, the last great one would have been X-Men: Days of Future Past.
- He mocked DC for casting Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern at the final scene.
Bad Qualities
- Once again, the Juggernaut is made into a random mutant rather than sticking to the source material.
- The Headmaster is a very weak villain and yet another 'evil orphanage owner' cliche with connections with Essex Corp. (a corporation referencing the last name for the X-Men villain, Mr. Sinister). The character could be an offensive stereotype to religious people.
- Fan-favorite Negasonic Teenage Warhead from the previous film has far less screen time than the first film.
- Pop culture references are kind of overused.
- Serious plot hole on how Cable even kidnapped Weasel for.
- While good, the story feels somewhat weaker than the first film.
- Yukio isn't like her comic book counterpart or her Wolverine counterpart.
- Domino and Firefist have been racebended from Caucasian to African American and New Zealand Māori respectively.
Trivia
- Josh Brolin, the actor that portrayed Cable, also portrayed Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadpool jokes about this in the movie, as the film came out shortly after Avengers: Infinity War.
- The Essex House for Mutant Rehabilitation (The orphanage in the film) is an obvious reference to his last name for the classic X-Men antagonist Mister Sinister.
- Deadpool 3 is in development, with Ryan Reynolds returning as Deadpool, and because Disney bought Fox, it will take place in the MCU rather than probably following up on the previous film. This would also mean that Deadpool can crack more funny jokes!
- Chris Evans would have reprised his role as the Human Torch in this film as a cameo.
