On February 21, 2011, one day after his 49th birthday, Dwayne McDuffie died at age 49, due to complications from emergency heart surgery at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California. McDuffie was known for his work at the comics industry, he worked to DC Comics and Marvel, with his famous creation being Static (which was adapted as an animated series called Static Shock), but he also was known in the animation industry, working in animated TV shows like Static Shock, What's New, Scooby-Doo?, Teen Titans, Justice League, Ben 10: Alien Force, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien and Ben 10: Omniverse (first two episodes only).

The 2012 film, Justice League: Doom was dedicated to his memory, while in the animated series like Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien and Ultimate Spider-Man made tributes to him in the episodes "The New Guy", "The Ultimate Enemy: Part 2" and "Damage", in the 2011 Static Shock comic series, Virgil Hawkins' new high school is named after McDuffie.
