Death of Norm Macdonald
Norm Macdonald was a Canadian stand-up comedian, writer, producer and actor best known for appearing on Saturday Night Live as a cast member during seasons 19-23 and Weekend Update anchor from season 20 to 23 before getting fired in 1998, then appearing as a one-time host the following year in season 25.
Aside from SNL, Norm also appeared as a frequent guest on Conan O'Brien's various talk shows (and was cited by O'Brien to be one of his favorite guests) and he also did voicework on some animated shows and movies, like Family Guy (where he voiced Death in the season 2 episode "Death Is a Bitch" and appeared as himself in the season 16 episode "Don't Be a Dickens At Christmas"), The Fairly OddParents (where he voiced Norm the Genie in the season 4 episode "Genie Meanie Minie Mo" and the season 5 episode "Back to the Norm"), Mike Tyson Mysteries (where he voiced the Pigeon), and Netflix's Klaus (where he voiced Mogens).
Norm died from acute leukemia at a hospital in Pasadena, California, on September 14, 2021, at the age of 61. He had been diagnosed nine years prior, though he disclosed his diagnosis to only a few close friends and family members, fearing that revealing his condition to the public would "affect the way he was perceived," according to his brother Neil.
The season 47 premiere of SNL, which aired on October 2, 2021, featured a tribute to Norm Macdonald at the end of the episode's Weekend Update segment, showing various clips from Norm's tenure as Weekend Update anchor.
