"Dimmsdale Daze" is the twenty-second episode in Season 10 of The Fairly OddParents.
Plot
Chloe's parents refuse to take her to the Dimmsdale Daze Carnival with Timmy, so she wishes to be a parent so she can visit herself.
Why It Dazes
- It is a rehash combination of "The Big Problem!" (the premiere episode of the show) and "Love at First Height" from Season 5. For example, in the former episode, Timmy wishes to be an adult so that he can do grown-up things while the latter episode is also the same thing, except that he wishes to have a body of a 16-year old so that he can ride a rollercoaster. In this episode, Chloe takes Timmy's spotlight instead like usual in this season. Additionally, the "creepy adult" gag from the former episode is reused and overplayed for this episode.
- In the first minute, Timmy decides to treat Cosmo and Wanda as barfing bags when he could have just simply wished for a normal barfing bag.
- While Jorgen is correct that Chloe cannot have fairies anymore due to her wish in being a parent (which also resulted in her parents being turned to children), he is wrong that Timmy cannot have fairies just because he and Chloe are on a sharing spree.
- Cosmo and Wanda were written out of the plot rather too quickly, as opposed to "The Big Problem", where they were at least given plenty of time to say goodbye to Timmy in said episode.
- Unlike "The Big Problem", there are no heartwarming moments present here. Neither Timmy nor Chloe show any remorse or concern for Cosmo and Wanda after losing them thanks to Chloe's wish, caring more about the town's carnival than getting their fairies back.
- Chloe is treated unfairly throughout most of the episode. For example, the ride operators for the Barf Dragon and Gravi-Twist refuse to let Chloe stay with the kids and instead make her pair up with the "creepy adults" who are Mr. Crocker and Mr. Turner respectively.
- Mr. Turner suddenly joins Chloe's children in the second half of the episode without any introduction.
- Some bits of the animation are cheaper than the rest:
- The animation for the Gravi-Twist when it's spinning resembles a CGI model rocking back and forth, and neither Chloe nor Mr. Turner are inside when they ride it.
- After Chloe scolds her children for their misbehavior, the top half of the doorway doesn't cover her body as she walks back upstairs.
- When Chloe questions Mr. Turner on his need for parental guidance, he responds with "I have the mind of a child", which is just representing how much the writers like to shove in the "Idiot Dad" trope on him as always.
- The way Cosmo and Wanda were written back into the plot makes no sense, as Chloe's parents (now as children due to Chloe's wish) are not even miserable, but rather hyperactive and annoying. Also, Chloe being a "mean" mother is not a reason for them needing fairies, given that she was not really doing anything mean to begin with, but rather trying to control the kids (including Timmy and his dad).
- Then again, this is Season 10 we're talking about here, where the writers no longer care about Da Rules, so why not?
- Predictable ending, where everything returns to normal.
The Only Redeeming Quality
- Chloe isn't as much as a Mary Sue as she was in the other episodes. This is also one of the very few times where she is a likable character.
