Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z Defeat the Super Warrior!! I'll Be The Winner (Japanese: ドラゴンボールZ 超戦士撃破!!勝つのはオレだ, Hepburn: Doragon Bōru Zetto Sūpā Senshi Gekiha!! Katsu No wa Ore da) or by Toei's own English title Dragon Ball Z: Attack! Super Warriors, is a Japanese anime science fiction martial arts film released on July 9, 1994 in Japan with the English dub being released by Funimation on September 13, 2005. It is the 14th Dragon Ball film and the 11th Dragon Ball Z film. It is the sequel to Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming released four months earlier.

Plot

Android 18 shows up at Mr. Satan's castle to get the money that he owes her for forfeiting the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. Mr. Satan is afraid of telling her that he doesn't have the money. Then a man who claims to be the cousin of Lord Jaguar, a person Mr. Satan used to know as a child, asks him to go with him to his castle or else he will tell everyone his secret that he wet his bed during summer camp. Not wanting his reputation ruined, he obliges and 18 goes with him so he doesn't run away without paying her. Goten and Trunks also go with them without them knowing.

When they arrive, Jaguar shows off his bio-warriors and wants Mr. Satan to fight them. Being scared that he'll end up getting hurt, he has 18, Goten and Trunks fight for him and easily defeat them. Jaguar then shows off his secret weapon: a clone of Broly that was possible thanks to the shaman Maloja.

Why It Sucks

  1. Once again Broly is the antagonist in his third appearance, albeit this time as a clone since he died in the last movie which is getting old since he was also in the last Dragon Ball Z movie. Somehow they made him an even more uninteresting character than his appearance in Second Coming because in the entire film he only says the word "Kakarot" once and makes a lot of shouting and grunting sounds.
    • This makes Bio-Broly a Generic doomsday villain due to the lack of motive or personality.
  2. For whatever reason, Bio-Broly turns into a green goo monster which is absolutely ugly to look at and does not resemble the character at all with the exception of his hair being partially shown, his voice, and his green-colored ki blasts. His normal appearance is shown very briefly in the film which angered many fans of Broly.
  3. The bio-warriors also have horrible, uninteresting designs. They were genetically engineered from human DNA, but they look nothing like humans.
  4. The film doesn't give an explanation on why the culture fluid changes Broly's appearance and later makes him gigantic, kills humans and animals and even the bio-warriors, or why it allows Bio-Broly to regenerate when Krillin uses his Destructo Disk on him.
  5. The plot was lazily reused with little difference from Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest where a scientist/rival lures someone strong to challenge warriors they created in a lab with the difference being the scientist wanting to taking over that warrior's body instead of a rival destroying Mr. Satan's credibility as the world's strongest martial artist.
  6. The movie poorly tries to connect to Second Coming by having the shaman Maloja taking Broly's blood to sell to Jaguar when he didn't even acknowledge him in the last movie let alone know who Broly is.
  7. While having Android 18 and Mr. Satan lead in this movie sounds exciting and different, they quickly get shoved aside for Trunks and Goten once Bio-Broly appears. Android 18 is shown not to be able to do anything against him even though she's stronger and more experienced at fighting than the two half-saiyans.
  8. Speaking of Goten and Trunks, their inclusion while not bad characters makes the movie feel childish such as when Trunks starts mooning at Bio-Broly and when both kids sneak in Men-Men's trunk when heading to Jaguar's castle which cause a tone whiplash due to that.
  9. Like the last movie, the placement of where the movie takes place in the anime is inconsistent. They mention Android 18 wanting Mr. Satan to pay up what he owes her for throwing the match at the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, but at the end of the movie Goku is seen in Other World, which means that he's dead. Goten and Trunks don't bring up the idea to fuse into Gotenks which implies that they never learned the fusion dance from Goku.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. As mentioned in W.I.S. #7, it was a good idea to have Android 18 and Mr. Satan have large roles in a movie if it were executed better.
  2. The movie has good animation.
  3. The next Dragon Ball Z movie, Fusion Reborn, is an improvement to this one since it fixed many of the issues this movie and Broly Second Coming had and saved the Dragon Ball movies for good.
    • On top of that, Dragon Ball Super: Broly is also an improvement to this one too since they managed to make the Dragon Ball Super version of Broly a likable character.

Reception

Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly is considered by many to be the worst animated Dragon Ball movie ever made. On IMDb it has a user score of 6/10 and on Letterboxd it has a user score of 2/5; both scores are the lowest out of all the Dragon Ball films. The YouTube channel TeamFourStar ranked Bio-Broly 21 in their top 24 movies and specials for being obnoxious and childish to be considered enjoyable[1] and the YouTube channel Totally Not Mark placed the film in the D tier(the very bottom of the tier list) when ranking every Dragon Ball movie calling it as bad as its reputation suggests.[2]

Broly wouldn't star in another movie until 24 years later in Dragon Ball Super: Broly which had franchise creator Akira Toriyama involved with changing his design, backstory, and personality, thus making this version of Broly canon to the franchise.

Trivia

  • When Bubbles tells Goku that Broly is causing trouble in Hell, it foreshadows the events of the next movie Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, but neither Broly or Bio-Broly appear in the film.
  • In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero the character Cell Max is similar to Bio-Broly. Both are recreations of dead villians the Z fighers fought in the past who go out of control when their creators are unable to control their creations and also lack a personality.
