After delivering a great movie, Toei really messed up by bringing back a villain that was thought to be dead.

Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming known in Japan as Two Dangerous People! Super Warriors Can’t Sleep (Japanese: ドラゴンボールZ 危険なふたり!超戦士はねむれない, Hepburn: Doragon Bōru Zetto Kiken na Futari! Sūpā Senshi wa Nemurenai) or by Toei's own English title Dragon Ball Z: Dangerous Rivals, is a anime science fiction martial arts film released on March 12, 1994 in Japan with the English dub being released by Funimation on April 5, 2005. It is the 13th Dragon Ball film and the 10th Dragon Ball Z film. It is the sequel to Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan released the year before and is followed by Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly released four months later.
Plot
Trunks, Goten, and Videl are searching for the dragon balls. While they search for the final dragon ball, they stumble upon a strange village who have a shaman conduct a human sacrifice to keep a monster that terrorizes them away. The three of them agree to help out the village and take care of it. Little did they know that Broly was awakened from being frozen after Goku defeated him seven years prior and seeks to find Goku to get his revenge.
Why It's Not Coming
- Because Broly became a popular character in Japan when he debuted in Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Toei broght him back to star in two other films. The problem with this is that Goku killed Broly and what was shown in this film on how he survived is complete nonsense:
- When Goku defeated Broly, he explodes which shows no way of him surviving the finishing blow Goku landed on his abdomen.
- The fact that he has a wound on his torso is laughable.
- Broly is shown escaping from New Planet Vegeta by being inside a space pod, except there were no other space pods shown except the one that his father Paragus was using and Broly crushed it with his father inside of it. It is also very convenient that he lands on Earth which happens to be where Goku is from.
- The comet camori would have instantly killed him because by the time Goku defeated Broly, the comet destroys New Planet Vegeta which shows no way of Broly escaping, even if there was a space pod that he could've used.
- When Goku defeated Broly, he explodes which shows no way of him surviving the finishing blow Goku landed on his abdomen.
- Broly has been flanderized from being a feared powerful warrior capable of coherent sentences yet a badass savage menace to a crazed maniac who mostly says "Kakarot" and being obsessed with Goku.
- The village portion of the movie has no reason to be here other than to fill out the running time of the already weak plot of the film. The writers could've easily have Trunks or Videl cause Goten to cry to wake Broly without having that part in the movie.
- There is no way Trunks, Goten, or Videl could have survived fighting Broly, especially Videl who is an ordinary human without super strength or capable of using ki other than flight.
- Goten and Trunks are weak characters to lead in a movie. Piccolo and Vegeta don't even show up without any explanation.
- False advertising: Goku is shown on the poster which implies that he's one of the major characters in the film, but he only appears in one scene in the film.
- There's a moment where Trunks pees on Broly which is a poor attempt at humor and would probably make fans of the character angry for making a mockery of him.
- Plot holes:
- Goten doesn't say his wish to have his father help him defeat Broly. He says it in his mind, except Shenron doesn't grant wishes unless it's spoken.
- Speaking of Shenron, he didn't even appear when the Dragon Balls were activated.
- When Gohan thinks he killed Broly by having him being submerged in lava, it is later shown that Broly used a barrier using his ki to protect himself. How was Gohan not able to sense Broly's energy if he was using it?
- Goten doesn't say his wish to have his father help him defeat Broly. He says it in his mind, except Shenron doesn't grant wishes unless it's spoken.
- Goten recognizes Goku's voice and appearance when he arrives to help stop Broly, but the movie takes place before the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament which is when Goten meets his father for the first time.
- Without a doubt, the film can confuse recent fans who did not know or perceive its existence, due to the innumerable holes in the plot, the chronology, etc.
- Overall, it started Goten, Trunks and Videl's debut in a Dragon Ball Z movie on a sour note.
- Poor writing by Takao Koyama, although not as bad as the follow-up film and the Urusei Yatsura episode "Black Hole Love Triangle".
Redeeming Qualities
- Goku, Gohan, and Goten using the Family Kamehameha to defeat Broly was awesome which emulates the fan-favorite moment from the anime/manga when Gohan defeated Cell using the Father-Son Kamehameha with Goku's help.
- Krillin saving Gohan's life while wearing Piccolo's clothes is a funny way of poking fun at the times Piccolo saves Gohan in the previous movies.
- The movie is nicely animated.
Reception
Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming is considered one of the worst movies in the Dragon Ball franchise. On IMDb it has a user score of 6.6/10 and on Letterboxd it has a user score of 2.5/5. The YouTube channel TeamFourStar ranked Broly – Second Coming 22 in their top 24 movies and specials for it's nonexistent plot, being boring, and Broly's pointless inclusion as an antagonist again[1] and the YouTube channel Totally Not Mark placed the film in the C tier (but argued that it could have also been in the D tier, the very bottom of the tier list) when ranking every Dragon Ball movie because the plot was progressing due to a series of coincidences and called it dumb[2].
Thanks to this movie, when Broly appears in a video game, he's usually depicted from this movie, which got many fans of Dragon Ball Z finding him an overrated character.
