Dredd is an action sci-fi movie made in 2012. It is based on Judge Dredd comics made by 2000AD.

Plot

In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.

Why It's The Law

  1. It's a huge improvement from the horribly misguided 1995 original, having faithfulness to the source material while also adding in it's own unique spin on the world.
  2. Karl Urban is much better than the over-acted Stallone of 1995, giving us the Judge Dredd we always wanted to see.
  3. Excellent action scenes.
  4. The 3D special effects are very good.
  5. There's also plenty of excellent practical effects throughout that look amazing.
  6. Ma-Ma is an interesting villain, played with exquisite creepiness by Lena Heady.
  7. Anderson is an interesting opposite to Judge Dredd. While Dredd is dedicated to upholding the law no matter what, bordering on obsession, Anderson is able to see between the lines. It also brings in the question of whether or not somebody who was forced to abet criminals deserves to be punished themselves.
  8. The movie is formatted like a video game (as writer Alex Garland had started out writing video games), which gives it an awesome style and excellent pacing.
  9. Judge Dredd's helmet is never taken off this time. That's right, a moment that ruined the original was thankfully not repeated. He is briefly seen without it, but is luckily shadowed out.
  10. There are even some corrupt Judges at one point, which fulfills the fantasy of seeing Judge-on-Judge action.
  11. Awesome soundtrack.
  12. Great environments that feel futuristic, present day, and sufficiently grungy for the Dredd-universe. It manages to be faithful to the source material while also bringing plenty of unique aesthetics, as seen in the Judges' new, less bombastic, and awesome costumes.

Dredd-ful Qualities

  1. Some unnecessary gory scenes.
  2. Some plot holes.
  3. The movie was a bomb at the box office (perhaps due to the original). Though it did get sequel potential from financial aid by the company, it's unknown if a sequel will ever be made.
