Evil Con Carne is an American animated series/spin-off of Grim & Evil and sister show of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, created by Maxwell Atoms. It first started off as an TV Movie Pilot in July 27, 2001. The series first appeared on Cartoon Network during the show Grim & Evil, along with The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. The two series later became separate programs in 2003. While The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy ran for six seasons, Evil Con Carne only ran for fourteen episodes and ended on October 22, 2004. It was also part of Cartoon Network's brand, Cartoon Cartoons, and is the 15th and final cartoon of the series (albeit when it was part of Grim & Evil, due to the Cartoon Cartoons brand being temporarily discontinued earlier in October 2003; the show itself is considered by some to be a Cartoon Cartoon regardless). An official series finale, titled "Company Halt", aired on March 16, 2007.
Summary
Hector Con Carne, a wealthy crime lord and evil genius bent on taking over the world and the League of Nations, was caught in an explosion initiated by his nemesis, Cod Commando, a soldier for the Secret Paramilitary Organized Response Kommand (S.P.O.R.K.). The explosion scattered most of his body across the world. He was rescued by the scientist Major Dr. Ghastly (Grey DeLisle), who placed his living remains into two containment units: one for his brain, and the other for his stomach. These two units were later installed into Boskov, a purple Russian circus bear, giving Con Carne's brain control over (almost) all the bear's actions and movements.
Hector, Dr. Ghastly and his military leader, General Skarr, then created a secret laboratory on an island with a bunny-shaped mountain known as "Bunny Island" (a parody of Ernst Stavro Blofeld's lair in the James Bond movies). Gathering an army, Con Carne resumed his quest for world domination and made a new goal: to find his missing body parts. The group's schemes typically end in failure, often due to the behavior and conflicts within the trio: Skarr is tired of being directed by Hector and wishes to overthrow him; Ghastly cares more about her unrequited love for her boss than world domination; while Hector is narcissistic, megalomaniacal, and generally abusive towards his henchmen.
Why It Wants To Rule The World
- Being a spin-off, the animation is just as great as Maxwell Atoms' other show The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy
- Interesting, great and unique plots, such as "The Pie Who Loved Me"
- Memorable and likable characters, such as Hector Con Carne, Boskov, and Major Doctor Ghastly.
- The animation sometimes blends with 3D which is unique and looks nice.
- It's TV Movie Pilot was a great way to start the series.
- The animation by Rough Draft Studios in season 1 is great, along with Digital eMation in season 2.
- Funny and hilarious dark humor.
- The main characters (Hector Con Carne, Skarr, Ghastly, Stomach, and Boskow) have made cameos in The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.
- Great voice acting by Phil LaMarr (The titular character of Samurai Jack), Grey DeLisle Griffin (The titular character of Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!), Frank Welker (Fred Jones and Scooby-Doo himself from Scooby Doo series and also thanks to "What's New Scooby-Doo?"), Jesse Corti, Maxwell Atoms, Jane Carr and Maurice LaMarche (Yosemite Sam from Looney Tunes series).
- The running gag of Cod Commando trying to stop Hector Con Carne in some episodes is an effective and enjoyable one.
- The opening sequence is really cool and nice animated, it's theme song is also memorable and catchy.
- It also did a great job being part of "Grim & Evil".
Evil Qualities
- General Skarr and Estroy can be pretty unlikable at times.
- "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" is an mediocre episode.
- The show lasted very shortly and ended fast after 2 seasons, while it did receive an actual finale in 2007 it still wasn't enough, it doesn't help that there are no signs of any revivals.
- Much like the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, the continuity isn’t that great. sometimes, characters get stuck in a situation impossible to get out of or suffer from things that can't be undone, only for things to go back to normal the next episode.
- Around 2004, "Grim & Evil" was split up into 2 shows despite they were the best leaving "Evil Con Carne" on a total cliffhanger. But was thankfully resolved in the "Billy & Mandy" episode, "Company Halt" from season 6.
