Rough Draft Studios is a Korean-American animation studio known for animating cartoons primarily from Disney, Cartoon Network, MTV, Comedy Central, 20th Century Studios (Formerly known as 20th Century Fox) and Nickelodeon.
Why There Far From Being Rough
- Very fluid and detailed animation in a majority of cartoons and films they animated.
- The wacky and hilariously cartoony scenes in The Simpsons episodes "Homer Goes to College" and "Homer's Triple Bypass" (the scenes with the bee and Homer's heart attack, respectively) were animated by them.
- The Owl House episode "Enchanting Grom Fright" was animated by them, and is notable for some of the most beautiful animations in the series, particularly during the climax.
- Their Gravity Falls episode "Not What He Seems" is noted for fantastic special effects even by the show's standards. They are also responsible for the first and third parts of the finale, "Weirdmageddon".
- Many of the staff are really prideful in their work, with their headquarters featuring paper cut-outs of SpongeBob SquarePants, one of their most well-known clients.
- Unlike most overseas 2D animation studios, Rough Draft is able to handle CGI animation.
- Similarly to TMS Entertainment, their work manages to look both fluid and on-model, such as in Rocko's Modern Life and The Owl House. Many studios take a "one or the other" approach.
- Of course, they can go off-model when it's funniest, as can be seen loud and clear in The Ren & Stimpy Show and SpongeBob SquarePants.
- They expertly mix traditional hand-drawn 2D animation with CG, especially in shows like Futurama. Their work as Orange (a subsidiary mainly used for anime) also exemplifies this.
- Their work often acts as a saving grace to otherwise bad/mediocre shows/films like Full English, The Brothers Grunt, The Patrick Star Show, "The Flintstones: On the Rocks" Napoleon Dynamite The Animated Series, Brickleberry, Billy Dilley and Sit Down Shut Up
- Under the name "Orange", they've also done various work for many anime like Black Lagoon, Love Live! School Idol Project (and its successor Love Live! Sunshine!!), Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing, Beastars (2019), Blue Exorcist, among many others.
- They animated most of the shows from Cartoon Network, MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and Disney Channel.
- Also, they animated many Adelaide Productions shows including Dragon Tales, Jumanji (TV series) (animated series), Dilbert, Jackie Chan Adventures, Harold and the Purple Crayon HBO animated series, etc.
- The animation from them along with Sunwoo Entertainment and Wang Film Productions for The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa with most of their episodes and music videos including The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Yummy Yummy Yummy!, Unlucky in Lesotho and Uganda Be an Elephant are absolutely top-notched.
- Recently their animation along with Saerom Animation to Disney Channel's new animated showHailey's On It is amazing and their designs on the characters including Hailey Banks herself looks cute.
- They even did great animation for the 2003 Loony Tunes Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner short film The Whizzard of Ow.
- They did a great job animating the Johnny Rehab commercial scene from Robocop 3.
- Their animation for Clash-A-Rama (Based on the video games Clash Royale and Clash of Clans) are magnificent and decent.
The Only Quality That Is Rough
- Not all of their work is good; their episodes of Steven Universe are infamous among the fandom for their scaling issues.
- Their work on Family Guy was also below their usual standards, but this can be excused because all of their episodes were produced for Season 2, which was before the show's animation became more refined. However, unlike their work in Steven Universe, they did try their best to stay on-model and fluid in their animation for Family Guy.
- Their work on Star vs. the Forces of Evil since season 2 (as well as Sugarcube's) is considered a bit of a step down from that of the more fluid animation of the first season by Mercury Filmworks and Toon City, though it does have the advantage of being the only studio to animate the series traditionally.
- Additionally, some of their animations in other shows that have good animation are not always perfect. The bad seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants, same with In the beginning and present, In fact because their animation for the show they've been working on for too long within years can be mediocre and awful compared to Disney, Fox and Cartoon Network's shows that are better animated than this one as time went on, and The third season of Dexter's Laboratory, while their animation is still good, can have washed out colors, and sometimes it is completely lifeless. While their animation for The Mighty B! is decent, it can look slow at times. The animation made by them for the Larry Doyle shorts of Looney Tunes, while still good, can look messy at times and often contains overly bright colors.
- Their animation for the first SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Help Wanted" was subpar and filled with errors, almost comparable to the quality of studios like Fil-Cartoons or Sei Young Animation.
- Their animation for King of the Hill, while still good, has similar problems with errors and is inferior to the ones done by Plus One Animation and Yeson Animation.
