The Critic was a short-lived animated sitcom that aired from 1994 to 1995. It first aired on ABC and finished on Fox. 10 webisodes were also made, mainly to add more movie parodies.
Plot
The plot involved a film critic named Jay Sherman who reviews movies he doesn't like for a living.
Why It Doesn't Stink
- It shows a satirical look at the poor decisions made by Hollywood which are still relevant today.
- Memorable and likable characters such as Jay Sherman and his parents, Marty Sherman (Jay's son), Duke, Vlada Veramirovich, and Alice Thompkins (Jay's girlfriend).
- There are numerous funny movie and television references and parodies, most notably Home Alone 5 (before the movie became a real thing in 2012), The Simpsons (Another Gracie Films show) and Dennis The Menace II Society.
- Briliant voice acting by Jon Lovitz, Nancy Cartwright, Christine Cavanaugh, Gerrit Graham, Doris Grau, Judith Ivey, Nick Jameson, Maurice LaMarche, Charles Napier, Park Overall, Kath Soucie, and Russi Taylor.
- It had multiple crossovers with The Simpsons.
- A good form of comedy comes from Jay's wacky stepfather, Franklin, who not only parodies movie characters but is generally a very wacky guy.
- It poked fun at political correctness.
- Great soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, especially the theme song.
- Great Designs.
- The animation from Rough Draft Studios is smooth and detailed which was further improved by the second season.
Qualities That Stink
- The revival season's animation is not very good because of its switch to flash animation.
- It is very short-lived as it had only 2 seasons and 23 episodes (3 seasons and 33 episodes if you count webisodes).
- Matt Groening hated his Simpsons crossover special with The Critic.
