Sym-Bionic Titan is an animated action cartoon created by Genndy Tartakovsky, Bryan Andrews and Paul Rudish.
Summary
Billed as "an exciting hybrid of high school drama and giant robot battles", Sym-Bionic Titan features "the adventures of three beings from the planet Galaluna who crash-land on Earth while attempting to escape their war-torn world". The series follows the lives of Lance (voiced by Kevin Thoms), Ilana (Tara Strong) and Octus (Brian Posehn), two alien teens and a robot in the form of humanoids who arrive on Earth, an "identical" planet to Galaluna, while fleeing an evil general who has taken over their home planet with the help of monstrous creatures called Mutraddi.
The three main characters include Ilana, princess of the royal family; Lance, a dark-hearted but capable soldier; and Octus, a bio-cybernetic robot, all of whom must now blend into everyday life in Sherman, Illinois. Posing as high school students, Lance and Octus work to conceal Princess Ilana from General Modula (Don Leslie) and his hideous space mutants sent to kill the sole heir of Galaluna.
When called into battle, the Galalunans are outfitted with individual armor that provides more than ample protection. It is when the gravest of danger appears that Octus activates the sym-bionic defense program and he, Ilana, and Lance unite "Heart, Body and Mind" and come together to form the spectacular cyber-giant Sym-Bionic Titan.
Why It Forms
- The animation by Rough Draft Studios is incredibly detailed and unique.
- The storyline is intriguing: two human-like extraterrestrials known as Galalunians, together with a robot, are compelled to integrate into a high school on Earth in order to evade capture by aliens who have taken over their home planet.
- The character designs are very good and unique.
- Great voice acting by: Kevin Thoms, Tara Strong (Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls (1998), Raven from Teen Titans, Princess Clara from Drawn Together, Ashi from the fifth season of Samurai Jack, Princess Twilight from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Harley Quinn from Batman Arkham series and Juliet from Lollipop Chainsaw) Brian Posehn, John DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama and Jake the Dog from Adventure Time), Tim Russ and Jeff Bennett (The titular character of Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Dad from Dexter's Laboratory and Kyle Katarn from Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy).
- There are lots of great action scenes.
- The soundtrack is great and catchy, especially the theme song.
- The humor is spot-on.
The Only 2 Bad Qualities
- It was canceled after one season owing to a lack of a toy line, And this isn't the first time Cartoon Network has canceled a show because of merchandise.
- The episode "Lessons in Love" includes a scene in which Kimmy pole dances on a lamp, which is inappropriate for a children's show.
Reception
Sym-Bionic Titan was well-received by viewers and critics alike, who applauded the show's excellent animation, intriguing storyline, and superb voice acting. Despite having competitive ratings versus other action series at the time and outstanding praise from fans and reviewers, it was cancelled in April 2011 owing to the show's especially high production costs and unable to acquire a toy line to offset the cost. Any hopes for a continuation were dashed when it was written off in 2015 for tax purposes.
Trivia
- Genndy Tartakovsky and Paul Rudish the creators of this show, previously worked on Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls (1998).
- Genndy himself was also the creator of Samurai Jack.
