Sym-Bionic Titan is an animated action cartoon created by Genndy Tartakovsky, Bryan Andrews and Paul Rudish. Billed as "an exciting hybrid of high school drama and giant robot battles", Sym-Bionic Titan features "the adventures of three beings from the planet Galaluna who crash-land on Earth while attempting to escape their war-torn world".

Summary

The series follows the lives of Lance (voiced by Kevin Thoms), Ilana (voiced by Tara Strong), and Octus (voiced Brian Posehn), two human-like extraterrestrial teenagers and a bio-cybernetic robot who arrive on Earth, an "identical" planet to their homeworld of Galaluna, after fleeing an alien invasion of their home planet by monstrous creatures called Mutraddi.

Now unwillingly on Earth as refugees and forcing to pose as ordinary high school students in the city of Sherman, Illinois, Lance and Octus must work to conceal Ilana, who is the Crown Princess of Galaluna, from General Modula, the once best friend of llana's father, the King, turned traitor from his hideous space mutants sent by him to crush the last of Galaluna's hope. All the while the trio must contend with the actions of Julius Steel, a top-ranking general of the United States Military who seeks to annihilate a perceived alien threat to Earth and the mysterious Solomon and Galactic Guardian Group, better known as "G3," a top-secret organization that has access to advanced technology suspiciously similar to Galalunian tech.

When called into battle, the Galalunians are outfitted with individual armor that provides more than ample protection. It is when the gravest of danger appears that Octus activates the sym-bionic defense program and he, Ilana, and Lance unite "Heart, Body and Mind" and come together to form the titular spectacular cyber-giant Sym-Bionic Titan.

Why It Forms

  1. The animation by Rough Draft Studios is incredibly detailed and unique.
  2. The storyline is intriguing: two human-like extraterrestrials known as Galalunians, together with a robot, are compelled to integrate into a high school on Earth in order to evade capture by aliens who have taken over their home planet.
  3. The character designs are very good and unique.
  4. Great voice acting by: Kevin Thoms, Tara Strong (Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls (1998), Raven from Teen Titans, Princess Clara from Drawn Together, Ashi from the fifth season of Samurai Jack, Princess Twilight from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Harley Quinn from Batman Arkham series and Juliet from Lollipop Chainsaw) Brian Posehn, John DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama and Jake the Dog from Adventure Time), Tim Russ and Jeff Bennett (The titular character of Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Dad from Dexter's Laboratory and Kyle Katarn from Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy).
  5. There are lots of great action scenes.
  6. The soundtrack is great and catchy, especially the theme song.
  7. The humor is spot-on.

The Only 2 Bad Qualities

  1. It was canceled after one season owing to a lack of a toy line, and this isn't the first time Cartoon Network has canceled a show because of merchandise.
  2. The episode "Lessons in Love" includes a scene in which Kimmy pole dances on a lamp, which is inappropriate for a children's show.

Reception

Sym-Bionic Titan was well-received by viewers and critics alike, who applauded the show's excellent animation, intriguing storyline, and superb voice acting. Despite having competitive ratings versus other action series at the time and outstanding praise from fans and reviewers, it was cancelled in April 2011 owing to the show's especially high production costs and unable to acquire a toy line to offset the cost. Any hopes for a continuation were dashed when it was written off in 2015 for tax purposes.
