Premise
The series centers on Bessie Higgenbottom, an ambitious Honeybee girl scout who believes she will become The Mighty B (a superhero) if she collects every Honeybee badge. Bessie lives in San Francisco with her single mother, Hilary, brother Ben, and best friend a dog, Happy. She believes anything can be done with the right attitude and a little hard work.
Mighty Bad Qualities
- The intro is kinda annoying. It's just the word "bee" being repeated too many times. Even when the show itself is all about bees.
- The show has a handful of clichés.
- A handful of unlikable characters who are all stereotypes such as Portia, who is the generic Queen Bee-esque character (no pun intended as the main show is bee-related).
- While the animation is decent, there are some times when it looks slow.
- The humor in the show is just plain unfunny, cheesy, and generic at the same time since a lot of them are quite predictable, despite Amy Poehler being the driving force of this show.
- There are many gross jokes and scenes, like Bessie trying to jump into Portia's mouth in "Body Rockers", Bessie farting and being banned from the community center for it in "Toot Toot", and Bessie pouring phlegm out of the thermometer in "Apoxcalypse Now".
- There are a handful of bad episodes:
- "Public Enembee"
- Bessie's scout troop, The Honeybees, are unlikable since they are stereotypical girly girls, and the leader, Mary Frances Gibbons, like her daughter, treats Bessie like an idiot for no reason. Also, why do Portia and Gwen have unique uniforms while the other girls don't?
Mighty Good Qualities
- Pretty decent animation, considering that it is done by Rough Draft Studios (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Yeson Entertainment (The Fairly OddParents)
- The character designs look great.
- There are some fairly funny jokes throughout the show.
- The premise is interesting, despite being poorly executed.
- Some good morals are in the show.
- Great voice acting by the talents of:
- Amy Poehler (who later voiced Joy in the Inside Out film series, and did an awesome job voicing Bessy)
- Dee Bradley Baker (Klaus from American Dad! and Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb)
- Andy Richter
- Dannah Feinglass
- Megan Cavanagh
- Grey Delisle Griffin (The titular character of Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, Mandy from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Daphne Blake from 2002-onwards Scooby Doo series, Kitty Katswell from T.U.F.F Puppy, and Lola Loud and Lana Loud from The Loud House)
- Jessica DiCicco
- Sarah Thyre
- The show does have a share fair of good episodes like
- "We Got the Bee" (which Has a catchy song at the end)
- "Little Orphan Happy"
- "Bat Mitzvah Crashers"
- "An I See Bee"
- "Something's Wrong With This Taffy"
- "Thanksgiving Beenactment"
- "Dragonflies" (which was also the season 1 finale), and more.
- The final episode, "C'mon Get Happy", was intended to be a good way to end the show, but it leaves off on a cliffhanger.
- The show did improve a bit by its second season. Sadly (and unfortunately), most people never saw this season because Nickelodeon dumped these episodes onto Nicktoons like most of their failed series.
- Some characters are likable, such as Happy, Ben, Penny, Hilary (Bessie's mom), and Bessie.
Reception
Despite positive reviews from critics and high ratings from the first season and the first 13 episodes of Season 2, the series received mixed-to-negative reviews from audiences and currently holds a 5.4/10 on IMDb. The Mighty B! also got good reviews from Google users earning 83%.
The show was nominated for six Annie Awards. The show has also been nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards, winning one. It has also been nominated for one Artios Award and one Golden Reel Award.
Trivia
- the series originally titled as Super Scout in 2006, later renamed as The Mighty B! instead.
- some of the other voice actors of The Mighty B! moved on such as Dannah Phirman in Season 9's The Fairly OddParents, Jill Talley and Jessica DiCicco between The Loud House, Puppy Dog Pals, the upcoming The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish and a upcoming Tom and Jerry direct-to-video films, Maya Rudolph in Big Hero 6, Sarah Thyre in All Hail, King Julien, Dee Baker and Audrey Wasilewski both The Lost Dragon and Willy Wonka, Grey DeLisle in current roles of Tom and Jerry related media, Kevin Michael Richardson in Snowman's Land, Keone Young in numerous Tom and Jerry roles such as The Karate Guard, Special Shorts and In New York.
- Nickelodeon shunted the series around the schedule shortly after it premiered in 2008, eventually kicked it across to Nicktoons in 2010, and finally burned off the remainder of season 2 there a year later (though the final episode's premiere was simulcast on both Nick and Nicktoons). Reruns continued to air on Nicktoons (often in graveyard slots) until February 14, 2016, but the series made a surprising return to television when it gained a semi-regular spot on the now-defunct NickRewind. The series even got a special marathon, taking up the entire block on June 26, 2021.
- In 2008, the show had a brief syndication run on TeenNick during its final months as The N.
- Erik Wiese later worked on Sonic Prime.
