Mercury Filmworks is a Canadian independent animation studio founded in 1997 by Clint Eland, who also serves as the CEO. They are notable for providing animation services mostly for Disney, Nelvana, and Studio B Productions (now part of WildBrain Studio).
Why They Rock
- They are experienced in very fluid and smooth animation in a majority of the shows they worked on.
- They set the bars high for The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse making the animation look very indistinguishable from hand-drawn animation.
- Their work also pushes to the limits of blending 2D and 3D animation, with Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil being a famous landmark.
- They succeeded in digital animation in their purest quality, with the notable example being Nick Jr.'s Toot & Puddle.
- The 1997 and 2008 logos are wholesome, as the 2008 logo consists of a boy pretending to fly a paper airplane. Their 1997 logo is also beautiful with a planet and a moon.
- Their rigging techniques are phenomenal. Their shows like Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Tangled: The Series and Centaurworld exemplify this, as the character animations are very fluid and call a mind to Walt Disney Animation Studios.
- Just like Rough Draft Studios, their work can often bump up the positives of a certain negative-received series like Little Ellen, Mega Babies and Fish Hooks.
- They are responsible for animating most of the shows from Disney Television Animation.
- Their division Lighthouse Studios excels in really good animation work as well.
- Much like Rough Draft Studios, they're also good at anime.
Bad Qualities
- Their 2021 logo isn't as memorable as their 1997 and especially the 2008 and 2014 logos.
- Some of their work tends to consist of animation errors and look cheap, specifically, the shows co-produced with Studio B.
- While their animation is decent in the first episode of Pickle and Peanut" and Fish Hooks, because of their overuseuse of stock images, it causes the show's qualities to deteriorate a little.
- On top of that, their animation for Little Ellen looks stilted and stiff most of the time.
- Their animation for Disney Junior's The Lion Guard while decent and beautiful, it is a major downgrade compared to The Lion King franchise's previous and first show The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa that was better animated by Rough Draft Studios, Wang Film Productions, Sunwoo Entertainment and Toon City.
