"This show is terrible. I don't even rate shows I don't like, but I went out of my way to come to write a bad review because that's how bad it was. Annoyed me and gave me a headache"
— Tristen K.
Fairview is an American adult animated satirical series created by R.J. Fried and produced by The Late Show host Stephen Colbert that premiered on Comedy Central on February 9, 2022. The series has a total of 8 episodes and features the voices of Marina Cockenberg, James Austin Johnson, Aparna Nancherla, Jeremy Levick, Jack Bensinger, Blair Socci, Graham Techler, Atsuko Okatsuka, Otter Lee, Carl Foreman Jr., Lisa Gilroy, and Joey Romaine.
Plot
How national politics causes wild small-town drama in the Natty Light-chugging, grocery store parking lot-fighting, a public urinating town of Fairview through the lens of its sloppy party girl turned pragmatic mayor, Kelly Sampson.
Why It Ain't Fair and Instead Unfair
- The biggest criticism of the series is that it tries too hard to be a satire of recent events due to them being done in a very paper-thin way with no actual commentary behind it. This is just inexcusable since this show airs on the same channel as South Park, which uses actual commentary behind it.
- Speaking of South Park, the series feels like it's a carbon copy of it but instead of telling an actual story, it's just a boring cartoon sitcom with constant swearing for no reason that turns out to be generic at best.
- The character designs and art style are horrendous to the point that look more like Weebles or living nesting dolls like the cast of Higglytown Heroes than actual humans, but also because they have realistic faces while having simple bodies, it makes them very creepy to look at. For example, Pastor Marv’s appearance looks similar to Justin Roiland, the creator of Rick and Morty.
- None of the characters are likable or memorable at all to the point that it's pretty hard to identify them due to their similar personalities. The worst offender is Beef Osterdorff, who acts like a stereotypical gamer who is fat and feels disconnected from reality.
- Speaking of which, the main characters, Kelly Sampson, Glen Michaels, Chelsea Hill, and Todd Osterdorff are just uninteresting since they have almost no real personality established over the series.
- Offensive, unfunny, and subpar attempts to humor feature jokes from a typical adult cartoon like sex jokes and more swearing, which is more irritating than funny. It doesn't help the fact that the first episode starts with a very disrespectful running gag about COVID-19.
- Bland and poorly detailed background designs that completely clash with the overall tone the characters are going as if they were attempting to imitate Brickleberry.
- Annoying and poor voice acting, with half of the time the voice actors screaming up their lines in one single sentence; also, sometimes the audio is too low that you cannot hear what the characters are saying likely because the voice acting was recorded via Zoom.
- Lazy flash animation with extremely clunky movements, and several animation errors here and there. For example, in one scene, Beef's car has a damaged door; in the next scene, it goes back to normal. There's a scene of Glen wearing a Batman mask that looks like a stock image from Google or Shutterstock used without permission.
- Speaking of the animation, it doesn't fit well into the tone of the series, making it look more like a mobile app game rather than an actual television series.
- Ludicrously awkward dialogue, like Chelsea saying, "Omni delivers crazy fast ever since they trained their drivers to pee in a tennis ball can at 70 miles per hour."
- Bad lip-syncing with the mouth movements suffering from some frame rates.
- False advertising: The premise leads to the expectation that the series will teach morals about diversity, but viewers will be met with an underwhelming surprise when they find out that the show only incorporates offensive jokes.
- Surprisingly enough, the only reason this show exists is just to fill the push from Paramount to put adult animation into streaming services and networks, but that's about it.
- The title itself is pretty lazy and unoriginal mainly because there are some cities in the U.S. called Fairview, and it's hard to identify where the series is set.
- In fact, there are places of the same name as the show outside the US, located in Ireland and the Philippines.
- Lackluster soundtrack that mostly consists of distorted banjo music playing in the background which is noticeable in the credits.
The Only Fair Quality
- There are some decent morals.
Reception
Fairview was universally panned by both audiences and critics due to its art style, animation, humor, writing, and voice acting. Shortly after its premiere, it holds a 1.4/10 on IMDb as well as a 3% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4% on Google, making it among the lowest-rated Comedy Central shows ever, alongside Biatches.
The producer Trevor Noah is implied to hate the series, as he gave a like on Saberspark's comment on Twitter saying "it looks terrible" that he made in response to the promo.
