Far Cry 2 is an open world first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360  in October 2008. It is the second installment of the main Far Cry series, preceded by 2004's Far Cry and followed by 2012's Far Cry 3. Months later, the game received a DLC titled "Fortune's Pack" which added new missions, vehicles and weapons. Since 2018, Far Cry 2 became backwards compatible with Xbox One (also works for Xbox Series X/S).

Why It Rocks

  1. It's by far the most realistic game in the series, even by 2008 standards.
  2. As mentioned above, the game has tons of interesting features such as the weapon jamming, degradation, fire spread, dynamic weather, destroyable plants and vehicle repair. The ability to heal the wounds at critical health makes its debut, way before it appeared in Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4 and Far Cry Primal.
  3. Smart AI, regardless of which difficulty you're playing.
  4. The game now features mercenary buddies as they will help you out in certain missions, give you side jobs and you don't need to worry about it if you get fatally wounded if one of them is in a "rescue-ready" state. Also, they're very vital if you want to keep them alive for good as long you have any Syrettes left.
  5. Good selection of weapons with their own stats that fit to your playstyle and reliability such as the AK-47 and the SVD Dragunov. There's also accuracy and reliability upgrades to make them last longer.
  6. New vehicles including the returning Hang Glider (as long you get used to the controls, as they're worse than in the prequel). Even there's two licensed Jeep vehicles: Wrangler and Liberty (Which is one of the most durable vehicles in the game).
  7. Huge map taking place in an unnamed African country divided in two regions (Leboa-Seko and Bowa-Seko), compared to Micronesia in the original Far Cry.
  8. Dark but awesome storyline.
  9. The Steam/GOG version includes the Fortune's Edition DLC packaged into the main game and you'll get the instant access to the Craftman's Double-Barrelled Shotgun, the Silenced Shotgun and the Explosive Crossbow (which is a straight upgrade to the RPG-7). Also, it adds some new content such as the Quad Bike.
  10. Fluid optimization even at lowest settings, making this game very low-end PC friendly.
  11. Beautiful graphics for a decade-old game (despite the ugly brown filter).
  12. A handful of playable characters to choose before starting the game with their own look.
  13. Outstanding dynamic soundtrack depending on the gameplay.

Bad Qualities

  1. The Malaria attacks can be pretty annoying. Fortunately, there's a mod that delays it for a VERY long time with the exception during the scripted cutscenes such as the intro, though.
  2. The game itself still suffers from glitches such as the infamously unwinnable Dogon Sediko Captive mission, which prevents you to continue the game's campaign mode if you have V-Sync off.
  3. The PC version had a fake Widescreen effect. This was fixed in later patches, including in the Steam release.
  4. The endings are kind of a bummer, regardless of which playable character you choose. The first one involves sacrificing yourself by detonating the dynamite. While the second one is even worse as after you deliver the diamonds, the Jackal puts you out of your misery before taking himself out.
  5. The guard checkpoint feature is flawed as there's no way to get rid of them while they tend to quickly repopulate when you return to the said area shortly. Not only that, but there's a large chance of getting ambushed by the said enemies relentlessly riding assault trucks with mounted machine guns in which can be pretty tedious, EVEN if you're already close to them.
  6. Due to the realistic features, some weapons such as the Desert Eagle and the Dart Rifle are very prone to jamming and can wear out very quickly. The USAS-12 is even worse as it will easily corrode after firing each shell. If you want an actual reliable shotgun, stick to the Homeland 37 or SPAS-12 instead.
  7. The PS3 version has a bug where it refuses to load a save file.
  8. The PC version has lots of audio bugs if you are playing on a newer PC. Such as silent phone calls and vehicle sounds not playing.
