Final Fantasy Legend II is a role-playing video game in the Sa・Ga series developed and published by Square for the Game Boy system originally in 1990 in Japan as Sa・Ga2 ~ The Treasure Legend, and in 1991 in North America.
Plot
Long ago, the ancient gods possessed a powerful force called the MAGI. The MAGI was split into 77 different pieces by them and they scattered them throughout nine different worlds. You have been given one of those pieces by your human father (who is human regardless of your species) before he leaves your house. Years later, your father has not returned. You go to Mr. S' school who tells you that the Prism piece your father gave you is a MAGI piece and that collecting all 77 pieces will form a statue of the goddess Isis, and gives you a quest to find the MAGI pieces in hopes of finding your father. Then, three other classmates decide to join you on your quest.
Why It Rocks
- Like the previous game, you get to choose the class of your character. You can play as either a human, a mutant, a robot, or a monster. Same goes to the other three party members you acquire during the introduction sequence. Also, Humans and Mutants can be male or female, which changes the start of the game slightly as male humans and mutants are better at strength initially, while females are better at agility initially.
- Humans are basic class. They have a chance to increase in stats after each battle. They have eight slots to equip weapons, armor, and items. Weapons will break after a limited amount of uses and eventually become unable to be used.
- Mutants are very efficient in magic abilities. They have a chance to mutate and gain abilities after each battle.
- Monsters cannot equip weapons, armor, or even items (other than MAGI) as the other classes can. They also cannot manually increase their stats, instead they can change forms by eating meat dropped by monsters, which changes their appearance, abilities, and stats to match that subclass. After eating meat their HP and abilities recharge. Also, their abilities can be recharged by resting in inns.
- Robots are what they equip and can equip multiple layers of armor. They can quickly increase in power and strength if you can afford powerful equipment. They can stack multiple armor pieces of the same type, as well as having the same effect for any segment of the same grade of armor. They have the ability to go past 99 in each stat type. Their equipped abilities can be recharged by resting in inns. However, equipping or unequipping limited use items on a robot will half the item's remaining uses.
- Nice and catchy music courtesy of Nobuo Uematsu.
- A pretty cool story is in the game.
- Good replay value due to the character classes, as you can create different combos of classes.
- Sometimes other characters will temporarily join your quest along with your base four party members.
- Instead of losing hearts after being knocked out in battle, party members only get stunned when their HP gets to zero, and revive to one HP after the battle ends.
- You can now save in up to three separate save slots.
Bad Qualities
- Weapons will break after a limited amount of uses and eventually become unable to be used, which can be annoying.
- If you raise your Robot's AGI beyond 99, the robot may up going LAST in battle which doesn't make sense.
