Final Fight 2 (ファイナルファイト2, Fainaru Faito Tsū) is a 1993 side-scrolling beat 'em up video game released by Capcom for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (known as the Super Famicom in Japan). It is the direct sequel to the 1989 coin-operated arcade game Final Fight, which was previously also released for the SNES. Final Fight 2 was developed by Capcom's consumer division with no preceding coin-op version.
Plot
After Belger's death in the previous game, the Mad Gear Gang is presumably destroyed and that the trio of Cody, Haggar, and Guy, who had succeeded in their rescue mission of saving Jessica from the Mad Gear Gang, are celebrated as the heroes of Metro City by the public, who had sought and wanted peace and happiness for many years in Metro City itself. In due time after their battle against the Mad Gear Gang, Cody and Jessica go on a personal vacation while Guy departs on a personal training journey of his own, leaving Haggar to return to his own duties of office as the Mayor of Metro City. Unknown to the heroes however, the remaining members of Mad Gear had silently withdrew from Metro City after Belger's death and sought revenge against the trio, reinventing themselves as an international criminal organization under the leadership of a new boss and while Guy is away training, Mad Gear kidnaps both Guy's girlfriend Rena and her father Genryusai.
Why It Rocks
- It introduce new characters which are Maki and Carlos, those would later appear in some other games such as the Street Fighters series.
- Maki is best described as a hot-blooded tomboy who loves to get into street fights, staying true to her past as a delinquent. She also acts very cocky and confident towards her opponents, as shown with her taunting them after winning. She dislikes the fact that Guy became the 39th master of Bushin-ryu, thinking she deserved it more than he did and wanting to take the title herself.
- Carlos is brave in nature and has a strong sense of justice, using his katana to strike down evil and believing that Metro City is an area worth protecting. However, he also has a laid-back personality in that he goes to watch wrestling tournaments and wants the Avatar to offer him chili, his favorite food, in his free time. He is also known to be quite knowledgeable about swords and other blades, going into detail about their histories in Street Fighter 6's World Tour Mode.
- Good graphics that are even better than the first game and for it's time, it truly looked good and almost look like a PS1 game, much like most of the Doraemon games on the SNES, this is because they are full of details, being colorful and the sprite work simply look great and is better than even those from Final Fight 3.
- Unlike the first game SNES port, this game had multiplayer, in which it is just as awesome as in the first game Arcade version (in that version, there's obviously multiplayer).
- Tight controls, being as tight and responsive as in the first game but they are slighly improved to the one from the first game port, since they are faster, and this make them even more responsive, as well as making the game more fun and solid.
- Awesome soundtrack, consisting of lot of musics that are enjoyable to listen to, and had that nice SNES Capcom feel to them, much like other Capcom games such as Street Fighter II.
- It is longer than the first game, lasting more than one hour, which is quite long for a beat 'em up game of the 90s.
- Hilarous box art for the North America version and a great cover art for the Japanese version.
- Fun gameplay, although the gameplay is more repetitive than the first game due to having mostly the same enemies, it is still fun because the combat feel satistying to put off, and the characters all play differently, giving them unique movesets or being faster than another one.
- Very good story that is somewhat dark, it is also even more unique than in the first game.
- The difficulty here isn't as unfair than in the first game, and it is more balanced but is still challenging to play.
- The bosses are just as great as in the first game, since they are very challenging and are fun to fight, also they are way more balanced than in the first game on SNES and even for the Arcade version because of how well balanced the difficulty of this game is in comparison.
Bad Qualities
- While the game is longer, the stages sometime drag on for too long, some of them last 11 minutes.
- The enemies variaty isn't that present, since most of the levels had the same enemies over and over, which make this game quite repetitive in a while.
Reception
Final Fight 2 received mixed to positive reviews by critics and gamers alike, although it received less positive reviews than the other entries of the trilogy, the game was praised for it's story, gameplay and graphics, it had a score of 69% on Gameranking.
