Flushed Away is a 2006 action-adventure game based on the movie of the same name. It was developed by Monkey Bar Games and published by D3 Publisher. It was released for PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS. The ports for Wii, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation Portable, Mac OS X, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 were planned, but all seven of those versions were cancelled.

Why It Should Be Flushed Down the Toilet

  1. Ugly graphics that are on par with Curious George (by the same developers) especially in the GameCube version that makes Roddy look like roadkill.
  2. None of the actors from the movie reprised their roles.
  3. Poor grasp of the source material with nothing that happens in the movie. For example
    • In the beginning level of the game, Roddy is with his gerbil butlers from the first trailer for the film, even though they eventually ended up being removed from the film since they made Roddy seem just spoiled rather than alone. Also they were never heard from again when Roddy gets flushed.
    • Roddy fights a spider-clown, and the slugs are your enemies which never happens in the movie.
    • Remember the Slugs that made the movie funny? They are now enemies of the game.
  4. The GBA and NDS ports has awful graphics that can make your eyes will go really blind.
  5. Poor camera controls.
  6. Bad and confusing level design, you will die a lot because the game never tells you where you need to go.
  7. Underwhelming combat system, the special attacks are so useless because the simple attacks are strong enough to defeat most enemies. It's possible to beat the entire game easily without the special attacks.
  8. The FMV cutscenes are very lazy because they are low-res slideshows of screenshots from the movie with the aforementioned replaced voice actors. (Similar to the SpongeBob Movie game, which was a much better game by the way)
  9. Long loading times, sometimes when you die you have to wait for the game to load and at other times it loads faster. However the loading times are improved when playing on emulators.
  10. Atrocious character designs, that look almost nowhere near as good as the movie. This should have been easier than in Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit as the movie was CGI, NOT stop-motion.
  11. The GameCube version is glitchier and the worst version, it's easier to die because the screen is darker. (Especially on older TV's at the time)
  12. Bad minigames that you only want to play them once. And there only two.
  13. The only purchasable are low-res screenshots from the movie and some stuff.
  14. The menu music is bad.
  15. The final boss level is very hard due to the player needs to take down The Toad by using Rita's bungee.
  16. Plagiarism: Roddy's sword attacking animation is similar to Sora's Keyblade attack from Kingdom Hearts and Rita's bungee attack looks similar to Kratos Blades of Chaos attack from God of War.
  17. Only three boss battles (or six counting the toad's rat henchmen that can be fought in a row) and they are very easy.
  18. Enemies repeat the same dialogue as you fight or kill them which can get annoying.
  19. Speaking of reason #3, the game itself does a pretty poor job at retelling the events of the movie!
  20. Continuing with the story, one who has seen the film can notice the various differences observed, for example, Rita's ship does not sink at any time, and Roddy and Rita are discovered after a race, instead of knowing each other.
  21. The story, in addition to being poorly re-adapted, does not explain things from the film, such as the villain's past, or Roddy's return to Piccadilly, as if that had never happened.
  22. The ending is disappointing: after you defeat the final boss, Roddy and Rita's relationship stills like in the scenes after Roddy and Rita met before.
  23. Various characters, such as Rita's family, were cut for unknown reasons. Sid only appears in the game in some main menu and pause menu sections and the still cutscene after beat the tutorial level.
  24. The cutscene skipping in the game is useless, it just skips just that line of dialogue and loads with text reading "Skipping'. This can get annoying if you just want skip an entire cutscene at once.
  25. Some enemies can take quite a lot of life from you (such as the orange Gangster Rats), which makes it annoying.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The soundtrack (except for the menu theme) is decent.
  2. The PS2 version has a much brighter screen that makes it easier to play.
  3. While the characters look ugly, the visuals and backgrounds are very nice to look at.
  4. The end credits song is catchy.
  5. The guitar riff that plays when you fail the mission could be funny at times.
  6. The level design of the game, while bad and confusing, has great visuals and is interesting to look at.
  7. The game can be funny sometimes, depending of your view.
  8. The final boss can be challenging and interesting, and requires analysis of his attack pattern and manner of attack.
  9. In Piccadilly, you have two characters who give you different quests. The "Picadilly Circus" level is included in the mission selector and since there are so many of them, it might be a good replay value, not the best, but it might add to your experience in the game.
  10. The levels which are your first time playing as Roddy and Rita are tutorials, and instructs you how to play.

Reception

Unlike the movie, it received negative reviews, with the worst rated ones being the PS2 and GBA versions on metacritic, both scoring a 43, while the DS and Gamecube versions scoring a 47.

Trivia

  • Despite the negative reaction it earned, it won the Annie Award for Best Animated Video Game in 2006.
  • A lot of next versions for the game after PS2, GameCube, GBA and NDS, are cancelled for unknown reasons.
