Gabby's Dollhouse is an American live-action/computer-animated interactive preschool television series created by Blue's Clues veterans Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey for Netflix which first premiered on January 5, 2021. In the series, Gabby (voiced and portrayed by Lalia Lockhart Kraner) and her cat friends called the Gabby Cats go on adventures inside the dollhouse. A movie named Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie is set for release on September 26, 2025.
Premise
Gabby's Dollhouse has built-in silences designed to encourage audience participation. Each episode begins with the live-action Gabby playing in her bedroom. She then unboxes a miniature package received in the Dollhouse Delivery brought to her Meow-Meow Mailbox that is the catalyst for an adventure inside the animated world of her dollhouse. Gabby puts on her cat ears headband and shrinks down with her stuffed toy Pandy Paws who comes alive to surprise Gabby with a "hug attack". Common rituals may involve an encounter with CatRat, who often randomly appears in one of the rooms in the dollhouse. The dollhouse has seven key cat-themed rooms where Gabby's adventures take place with the various Gabby Cats: At the end of each episode is a "Gabby Cat of the Day" segment where one of the Gabby Cats is selected to guide the viewer one-on-one in crafting, cooking, singing, or other activities with a few episodes having Gabby in the selection. Then it goes back to live-action Gabby who closes out the episode.
Why It's Cat-tastic
- The animation, while stiff in the first season is smooth, fluid and decent.
- The characters are likeable, especially Gabby herself, the voice acting is very well done too.
- The humor is very well executed, especially the first episode, which was a nice start off to the show.
- Speaking of, the first episode was good, decent and a great start off to the series and does a pretty great job staying in shape for 3 years (although it has like nine seasons now, the show hasn't gone through seasonal rot yet)
- The songs, while annoying for first time viewers are catchy and a bit of a breather for first time viewers. It helps that some characters either get their own parts or even sing, which is just as good.
- Even, the same people who made Team Umizoomi and Blue's Clues even managed to have some of its charm, and Donovan Patton, who portrays Joe in the Blue's Clues shows, voices CatRat in Gabby's Dollhouse.
- CatRat is also a hilarious comic relief and can actually be an anti-hero and a villain at the same time.
- Overall, this show is good and decent and can teach some good morals to kids, or adults even!
Qualities Failed.. Horribly
- There can be toilet humor in the show.
- The animation is stiff sometimes, thankfully it improves later on.
Receptions
The show was nominated for a Kidscreen award in 2021 and released a series of show-themed toys for the 2021 holiday season. For the episode "Cakey's Cupcake Cousins", it was nominated for Best Animated Television/Broadcast Production for Preschool Children at the 50th Annie Awards.
Trivia
- A movie based on the show was announced by Universal Pictures and is set to release in 2025.
