Gex: Enter the Gecko is a platform game released in 1998 for the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Microsoft Windows and the Game Boy Color. In 2011, it was added to the PlayStation Network.

Why It Rocks

  1. Gex´s movements and attacks consist of a tail whip attack, bouncing on his tail, using his tongue to eat flies, and performing a flying karate kick.
  2. The game parodies multiple franchises, such as Looney Tunes, Star Wars, The Matrix and mainly James Bond.
  3. Occasionally Gex wears different outfits in some of the levels that represent the theme of the level.
  4. Great soundtrack that fits the level and comedic theme of the game.
  5. Each level has about three remotes to collect, as well as an additional one for collecting 120 collectibles within the level and a hidden silver remote.
  6. Finding remotes unlocks bonus levels that are as well a homage and parody to other Crystal Dynamics' games and movies.
  7. Creative boss fights, especially with the "Gexzilla vs. Mecharez" boss fight.
  8. Great final battle against Rez.
  9. There are three ways to set the camera control and adjust the view points instead of the camera being rotational, similar to Super Mario 64.
  10. The N64 port features a unique level set on the Titanic.
  11. Vivid and colorful 3D graphics that push some limits of the Playstation and are better on the Nintendo 64 and PC.

Bad Qualities

  1. The Nintendo 64 version lacks some content and the framerate (on real hardware) and distance fog is significantly worse in this version.
  2. The Japanese localization (called Spintail instead of Gex 2 and published by Bandai) similar to the US localization of Persona on the PS1, is very poorly done as for some reason Gex and Rez are now named Reno and Ranald respectively (which rubs more salt on the wound because the Japanese version of the first game had no changes to their names), almost every English text is removed/replaced in Japanese, Most of the humor was changed to fit Japanese audiences, tutorial boxes are removed in hub worlds for some reason and Game Over is translated to "おしまい oshimaii (The End)" which doesn't make sense since most Japanese games also use the term "Game Over"(ゲームオーバー Geemuoubaa). Due to this, sales became poor and caused Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko not to be released and localized in Japan.

Reception

Gex: Enter the Gecko received mostly positive reviews. Aggregating review website GameRankings gave the PlayStation version 81.70%. USA Today gave the game "4 out of 5 stars!" GamePro acclaimed the game to be "A must-own for platform fans!"
