Girl Finds Out She's Adopted On Thanksgiving (now renamed as Girl Find Out She's Adopted) is an 2021 American drama coming-of-age film, produced and released by Dhar Mann Studios. The film is both directed and produced by Ruben Ortiz along with Dhar as the co-producer, from a screenplay written by Dhar Mann and Troy Whitaker (idea) and the score composed by Theodore Ramirez. It stars Sofia Chicorelli Serna as the main protagonist, Sabrina alongside, Colin A. Borden, Katherine Norland, Brianni Walker, Nerissa Tedesco, Johnnie Mack, Sean Harris, Debi Kaye, Jordan Demario, Amanda Klein and Kelssey Lee Smith. The movie tells a story about a 14/15 year old teenager girl named Sabrina, who lives a happy life with his adopted parents. It was not until on her 15th birthday where she get some shocking and heartbreaking that- she is adopted. She immediately started to cry and run inside into her room and packed her stuff to find her real parents and get away from his adopted parents. The film had its premiere during Dhar Mann's 2nd Annual Thankgiving Special on November, 23th 2021 before releasing digitally online a day later. The film was panned by reviewers who criticized its plot, acting, editing and humor, while fans of Dhar Mann praised it a lot.

Dhar later released his second film called Dhar Mann’s CHRISTMAS FEATURE FILM! on December 25, 2022.

Plot

Life was all normal and well for soon to be 15-year-old Sabrina, and she had a loving mom and dad and just a love for the world. But on her 15th birthday, she learns something tragic- she's adopted. In dismay, anger, and sadness, she starts devising a plan to find her real biological parents and get away from her adopted parents, even if it means faking identities and backstories to do so. But as she goes, she learns her real parents are not as good as they could have been, and through the twists and turns of the journey, she learns the true meaning of family on the way, and she's not the only one to do so.

So You See... This Is Why It's a Rejected Adoption

1. First and foremost, Let’s start off with getting the elephant out of the room, It would have worked better as a regular Dhar Mann video rather than a full-length movie, due to the fact that the pacing and acting are extremely slow, with filler only to increase the video's length. This results in the movie being really boring, and you don't end up feeling anything for the characters. To give you an idea of how long the video drags out its plot, the scene where Sabrina finds out she's adopted lasts about 7 minutes.
2. The title of the film feels extremely jarring and unmemorable, and looks awkward when typed out on the poster simply due to how long it is.
3. As mentioned in Reason #1, there are loads of filler, which only exists to pad out the runtime. One major example of filler is the pointless acting scene that lasts about 3 minutes. Heck, if you removed most of the filler, this "movie" could only be about 40 minutes long!
   • The so-called "film" barely counts as one as it feels more like a regular Dhar Mann video with 70-minute length.
4. There are two completely different versions of the movie, both of which are exactly the same but with changes to make it completely different and reuploaded for more money.
   • The one featured in the Thanksgiving Special has 30 minutes of filler during the beginning and the end of the movie, with a special tribute to Carl Judie. It also has the Dhar Mann Studios logo at the beginning of the film.
   • The second one, which was reuploaded removes the Dhar Mann Studios logo and the extra content. This one adds subtitles in which you cannot remove, this will basically make you choose the first version of the film instead.
5. Very poor editing which shows a bunch of errors in the sequences.
   • For example in one of the scenes, the cop's nametag first shows his name is "Officer Browne" A few seconds later into the scene, the nametag is changed to "Officer Jackson".
   • A caption mistake is present when Sabrina says "See you at school tomorrow", even though the caption says "See you at school, tomorrow", even though you shouldn't put a comma there.
   • You can notice the bottles in her biological mom swap positions to most likely avoid the labels being scene, making them inconsistent in the scene.
   • In the epilogue where the fridge closes, the lights don't go out.
6. It bluntly admits the movie isn't suitable for children, as it shows in the Thanksgiving Special at the beginning of the film. "WARNING: This film contains descriptions of drug use that may not be suitable for children. Parental discretion is advised." Despite the movie being posted on a "family-friendly channel, the second version removed the disclaimer, however.
7. The concept of a kid finding out they're adopted is just an abused, rehashed concept Dhar Mann has previously done in videos not even surpassing 10 minutes, showing more so of the fact that this could have been a normal video if you were to remove the rising action and climax. But because of money, Dhar Mann couldn't do that, and... this was created.
8. The movie can be seen as offensive to adoption scenarios, as it portrays that children are only put up for adoption because the parents are addicts or criminals, but there are many other reasons why this could happen, like being too young, close to death, etc.
9. Even though it provides a good moral, it's just shoved in your face and barely impacts the movie. In fact, the moral is said at the beginning and is then forgotten about until the end.
10. Horrible advertisement, as the trailer just shows Sabrina sobbing in her room and then her slowly talking about the film, and then random clips from the movie. That is not a good way for Dhar Mann to advertise his first-ever movie. Also, the trailer was only released '2 days before the film's release date, which is way too late for a trailer to come out. Could this movie be rushed?
11. 'False advertising: The thumbnail is quite literally the same as the one for the trailer, and an actual scene like that doesn't even appear in the movie. And on the topic of false advertising, the title implies this happens on Thanksgiving, yet it happens on Sabrina's birthday, which is BEFORE Thanksgiving. And not only that, the actual video changes the title to "Girl Finds Out She's Adopted", but the "Thanksgiving" part is still often included in the title, as shown by the movie poster. And finally, the Thanksgiving part is quite literally irrelevant for a third of the movie. Why add the "Thanksgiving" part when it barely affects the movie? Because...money. It is likely Dhar Mann thought if he added the "Thanksgiving" part it could get more people to click.
12. Speaking of titles, just re-listen to the title: "Girl Finds Out She's Adopted On Thanksgiving". Who would name their movie that? Sure, Dhar Mann does use the same title format for all of his videos, but using it for a movie too?!
13. A majority of the characters, especially the three main are very unlikable.
    • Sabrina is pretty annoying and unrealistic, as whilst it's normal for kids to feel mixed emotions for a while after finding out they were adopted, soon enough, they learn to accept it. However, for, she instantly gets upset and starts packing up to see her real parents (at 15 years old, mind you!). She doesn't even know the backstory that much, and she's already making bad decisions for her life. And somehow, when she finds out her dad is in jail and her mom is unknown, she still goes along with the plan. She even goes as far as to faking that she's all alone at the jail just to see her dad. Funnily enough, in one scene her adoptive dad says "She's smarter than a lot of adults I know, she'll be fine", yet in the next scene she's in her mom's house acting like she wants to stay.
      • She also cries way too much in this movie, even in scenes where it isn't even necessary.
    • Sabrina's adoptive parents, (while not as atrocious as most other Dhar Mann parents), are bland as heck. Sabrina's dad in one scene even says not to talk to Sabrina about the adoption thing because it "hurt her feelings", which is not a good idea to do.
    • Toni (Sabrina's friend) is just an unnecessary plot device shoved into the movie as she gives Sabrina an idea, and they talk at school...and that's it. Actually, it's not, because she randomly is put into the end epilogue at the full end of the movie at her birthday. What does this have to do with the movie? At least the other epilogue scenes had to do with Sabrina's biological parents. Toni's birthday is just shoved in with no real connection. Granted, Toni did mention earlier in the movie that she looks through her birthday presents in the attic, which is how she is able to find out what is inside them, but the mention was so small that it was barely noticeable.
      • Not to mention, her name isn't even said once in this movie. The only way you can find out what her name is is in the credits.
    • Bella (Sabrina's biological sister) is a beyond forgettable and bland character who probably wasn't even needed in the movie, making her a filler character, who takes up 5 minutes of screen time. The only two things she was used for are being another plot device, as she helps Sabrina go to her biological mom's house and arrives at Sabrina's house at the end. But other than that, she is basically pointless. You could take her off the movie, and make Sabrina an only daughter and the movie would still be the same
14. Major plot holes:
    • How did Sabrina even know where the "important files" were? You'd think they'd be hidden more carefully, but they weren't.
    • In the scene where Sabrina's biological dad tells her mom has different names to avoid police, he does it right in front of the police. And the police somehow didn't think about doing anything about it.
    • Despite the video containing a lot of filler to expand its runtime, the video just skips the entire scene where Sabrina leaves her biological mom's house! And how could she? Considering how dark and secretive her biological mom and drug dealer are, and Sabrina wanting to come to them, you'd expect her to kinda be stuck. But you know, go off we guess.
15. Very poor acting. Many of the actors are wooden and are not emotive at all, such as Sabrina's adoptive parents and Bella. But on the other spectrum, we have actors who just go too far into their "acting", especially Sabrina (Who also doesn't have good acting, in most of the scenes she is seen smiling even though she is supposed to be sad). Along with that, many awkward moments occur, like this kid walking down the hall when Bella and Sabrina are talking.
16. Pretty boring movie poster, as it's just Sabrina and her parents on a white screen.
17. For some reason, the dimensions of the video were changed from the normal ratio to a wider thinner screen, which is slightly distracting.
18. Even if the creepy atmosphere of Sabrina's mom is pretty good, it may creep out some viewers, especially young kids.
19. As mentioned before, this movie was clearly made only for money, which is weird considering Dhar Mann already gets a lot of views, so why would he need a movie? It could be possible that Dhar Mann was planning on thinking that if he made a movie, it would end up being a box office success or something, but of course, it did not happen. Speaking of which, they referenced this in "Kid SNEAKS CANDY Into The MOVIES!", only showing Dhar Mann trying to support this. By the way, that video was released on March 4, 2022, whilst this premiered on November 23, 2021 four months apart from each other. It is also likely this failed considering Dhar Mann only gets 3.9 millions views nowadays, showing it had no effect. Something that also should be mentioned is that the movie only has 15 million views, whilst other simpler Dhar Mann videos have even more, for example, a video that was posted a few days after the movie has 20 million views.
20. The epilogue is not funny, as it's just Sabrina's biological dad getting asked for money from a kid and Sabrina's biological mom getting her orange stolen and tackling her roommate (who's apparently not her boyfriend if you check the cast in the description). And as said, Toni's birthday in the epilogue is just tacked in for little to no reason. Not only that, the epilogue is actually more proof Dhar Mann is money-hungry because, without the epilogue, the movie ends at 59 minutes (counting filler). Yep, he was that desperate to make this an hour.
21. (Potential) sequel baiting: Currently, this movie is in a playlist by Dhar Mann saying "feature movies", and often at the times it is referred to as "Dhar Mann's first movie", such as in the trailer, meaning there could possibly be more Dhar Mann movies, even with how bad this was received. And if things go so far, they may end up exiting YouTube to actual theaters, which could be possible as Dhar Mann is extremely popular at this point, getting over 20 million views. And if that does happen, it will be even more of a total disaster. However he announced that he would show his second film in a theater on December 18, 2022, and it would release later on YouTube a week later, meaning he created another one. In which would later be released.
22. Due to many of the issues that the movie has, it is possible that it was rushed to be released during Thanksgiving time as the movie was likely made in just about a week. When movies should take months or years to make, to make them good.

Redeeming Qualities

1. There is still warmth and charm to the movie despite all of the mentioned flaws.
2. Decent and on-tune soundtrack.
3. The creepy atmosphere of Sabrina's biological mom's apartment fits pretty well, with her trying to hide from the cops.
4. The ending was pretty heartwarming, solving all of the plot points: Sabrina gets home and eats Thanksgiving dinner, and her biological sister comes over, and they have a happy time. Meanwhile (in the epilogue), Sabrina's biological mom and dad are struggling, with her dad failing to trick another kid and her mom getting in a fight with her roommate.
5. A surprisingly good moral: Family doesn't require blood—it only requires love.
6. "MY ORANGE!!!"
7. Unlike his next film, at least this movie had an actual plot and is made to be an actual movie, despite being terribly executed.

Reception

Girl Finds Out She's Adopted On Thanksgiving was received with mainly positive reception from the Dhar Mann fam/fans, and we mean mainly fans. In fact, the movie on YouTube has a definitely not deserved high like to dislike ratio, as it has 314k likes and 9.9k dislikes. However, from other viewers, it received extremely negative reception due to being too slow, having weird plot points, lackluster acting, bad humor etc. According to IMDb, 150 IMDB users reviews give the film a weighted average of 2.2/10. However, it seems like the bad reception is not going to stop Dhar Mann from creating more movies, because as said, it's likely he may make another film in the near future, and the good reception from his fans was probably also enough for him.
