"Girly Squirrely" is the fourth episode in Season 10 of The Fairly OddParents, and the two hundred sixty-first overall episode of the series.

Plot

Chloe joins the Squirrely Scouts and saves the troop by helping them get their first merit badge.

Why It Doesn’t Deserve To Join The Squirrely Scouts

  1. The Squirrely Scouts have been flanderized from camp experts to complete simpletons.
  2. Chester, Sanjay, and Elmer don't appear here, despite them being members of the scouts.
    • Although A.J. appears in this episode, he doesn't interact with Timmy and stays silent. The only exceptions were when he was seen singing the Squirrely Scouts credo, and shouting out "Stinkfoot!" with the rest of the scouts.
      • In the credits, A.J. is referred to as "Panicky Scout". This could indicate he's an entirely different character with the same design, as the series has a habit of reusing character designs for various characters, background or otherwise.
  3. Some of the animation here is noticeably cheaper. A prime example is when the Squirrely Scouts get tied up in a ball of rope and fall into a river. The ball of rope hits the ocean, freezes for a split second, and choppily slides in the direction of the river with no additional movement.
  4. Lots of padding just about throughout the episode. Not much else is really going on other than the characters moving from place to place each time the writers come up with nonsense and randomness to place in favor.
  5. Plot hole:
    • Why would a bear be the supervisor of the scouts?
    • Why did Chloe join the Squirrely Scouts, a boy scout group, when previous episodes have established that there's also a girl scout group, titled the Cream Puffs? That was a really missed opportunity for Chloe to interact with its members, such as Tootie.
  6. Unfunny, stale and repetitive attempts at humor as usual. In case of this episode, the running gags are as follows:
    • The bear taking down notes on Mr. Turner's immature behavior, and Mr. Turner shouting at the bear not to judge him whenever it does so.
    • Stuart, one of the scouts, seeing "little people" (actually Cosmo and Wanda).
    • Chloe snapping each time she hears the word "quit".
  7. When Wanda complains about the camping place, Cosmo turns himself and her into bear food cans and they get eaten by the aforementioned supervising bear. Soon, Wanda notices a brook very clearly made of stomach acid, and she and Cosmo dip their wands in it. Seriously, isn't this something Cosmo would do? Granted, they are supposed to be "two halves of a whole idiot", but it's still very out-of-character for Wanda.
  8. At this point, Cosmo and Wanda are rendered useless to the overall plot and remain inside the bear's body until the end of the episode.
  9. It's too predictable and formulaic, i.e. Chloe makes the scouts earn a merit badge and the scouts keep failing while Cosmo and (more disappointingly) Wanda screw themselves over due to their stupidity.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Good voice acting, like usual.
  2. It might be satisfying that Mr. Crocker does not appear at all in any moment in this episode, especially considering how overused he had been at this point. Alongside with the fact that he had been overused in the past four episodes. It's also one of the seven episodes in season 10 not to feature him.

Reception

This episode currently holds a 4.3 rating on IMDB.

Trivia

  1. Grey Griffin voices A.J./Panicky Scout's sounding effects, likely due to Gary LeRoi Gray not being available.
  2. Due to a typo, there is an earlier version of the title card that is misspelled as "Girly Squirrley".
