"Goodbye, Doraemon" is a 33 mins special episode from the 2005 Doraemon series.
Plot
Episode starts at a dark cold snowy day and the scene immediately changes few hours ago when Gian is about to beat up Nobita again, but failed after Nobita slips and instead punches at the wall and continues to chase Nobita, as the title pops out. Back at home, Doraemon had a sad announcement to make as they both sat down quietly, while Nobita is waiting for an answer smiling. Doraemon tells him that he's going back to the 22nd century, while Nobita holds a fake smile after hearing those words coming out.
Why It Say Goodbye (In a Good Way)
- First off, this is not only one of the besy special this show offered but also one of the most emotional as Doraemon left Nobita and he had to deal with that but he had troubles with it, which did lead to the events of this episode.
- This episode is in widescreen and has beautiful animation that is even better than usual, thanks to the animators doing an amazing job with this episode animation.
- All the characters, except maybe Gian and Suneo, are likable:
- Nobita is a very good protagonist for this episode as usual, especially that now he had to do his life without Doraemon and he's depressed, until that after he use a gadget, he unintentionally make Doraemon not leaving the place, which will give an amazing ending (more on that later).
- Doraemon, while he leave Nobita, you can tell that he doesn't want and want to test with Nobita, but he unfortunately can't rest, until the end.
- Gian and Suneo, while unlikable, they could be seen as good antagonist for Nobita in this episode, even though they aren't actually villains.
- The story of this episode is very interesting since it's about Doraemon leaving and that Nobita had to make his life without him, which was not seen before, and that actually work.
- The fight scene with Nobita and Gian is quite entairtaining and very good since we know how much Nobita want to prove to Doraemon that he will prepare himself for when he leave, and in fact it is the only time where Nobita win a fight with Gian.
- The tone of the episode is much sadder/darker than the usual episodes of the series, with theme such as depression and a friend that will leave you, perfectly fitting for a character such as Nobita.
- And also, it is probably a great idea that this episode is dark because not only does the 2005 series rarely had dark moments but also, this episode had a fresh change to it's tone because of this.
- In fact, the tone of this episode is much more improved from "Goodbye, Shizuka" as while that episode was decent, it didn't know if it wanted to be darker or just a sad episode, howewer this one does actually know what tone it want to be and because of this, this episode story is even more interesting than that episode.
- The running time of this episode is not 7 or 11 minutes but rather 33 minutes, which perfectly fit this episode story.
- A ton of very emotional moments, such as when Doraemon leave, which made Nobita depressed, the fight with Gian somehow (mostly because Nobita though about Doraemon) and off course the ending.
- In fact, the emotional moments are even better than some of the best emotional episodes of both the 1979 and 2005 series.
- It paved the way for the first film in the Stand By Me duology, as that film will adapt this episode story heavily.
- Amazing Ending: Nobita finally get to see Doraemon again after unintentionally using a gadget that reverse what he said, and they both are happy together.
Bad Qualities
- As stated earlier, both Gian and Suneo are unlikable and treat Nobita badly even when he's depressed that Doraemon did leave, in fact they almost are at their absolute worst here.
- Gian worst moment was when he trick Nobita about the fact that Doraemon "did return" and Nobita quickly see in his house, only to see that he wasn't there yet, which made him even sadder and furious.
- In addition, they doesn't get punished at all for their action, aside from the fact that Gian got injured by Nobita but that not enough because when that moment happened, it wasn't the near end of the episode.
- Doraemon didn't give any explanations about why he need to come back to the future and that he can't get back, which made Nobita confused about why he leave.
- Plot Holes: If Doraemon cannot rest and that he is worried about his life, then why he doesn't try to call someone else like Dorami for exemple ? This is never explained too.
Reception
This episode received very positive reviews by fans and is a fan favorite for many peoples, mostly because of the emotional moments and it had became one of the most acclamed episode of the show.
