Guardians of Sunshine is the 16th episode of Season 2 and the 42nd episode overall of Adventure Time.

Plot

After Finn and Jake played Guardians of Sunshine and lost, they decided to enter into a video game world, but things don't go as planned.

Why It Deserves to Get Eaten by Sleepy Sam

  1. This episode is nothing but a Finn and Jake torture episode as they end up losing a game just because the game is weak.
  2. Missed opportunities:
    • The concept of characters entering a video game world is interesting in paper, but this one executes poorly because of being a torture episode. "Gaming the System", an episode of Phineas and Ferb has a decent concept.
    • Jake grabs coins in this game, implying that he and Finn are rich when they leave this world. However, when Hunny Bunny appears and shoots laser eyes on them, the coins disappear. They end up becoming weak as a result.
    • Finn and Jake would literally use their respective weapons (sword and extended arms) when fighting enemies just like in several episodes (which also serves as a plot hole).
  3. Plot holes:
    • When the player gets eaten by Sleepy Sam, it automatically gets a game over, but when Finn gets eaten by him, it loses a life.
    • While Finn gets killed by Bouncy Bee, it is never explained how he was stabbed because when he and Jake attempt to fight, it cuts to "Adventure Time" logo instead.
    • Also, when he gets killed, he resurrects slowly unlike Jake where he resurrects quickly after getting killed in the lava pit, twice.
    • While Sleepy Sam is a small enemy and he can escape in a small hole, how can Hunny Bunny and Bouncy Bee enter outside a small hole?
  4. Finn and Jake, while likable, are hypocrites as BMO insisted not to enter, because it is too dangerous to face Sleepy Sam.
  5. There is an infamous scene where Jake kills in the lava pit, twice. One he leaps with his eyes closed and two he runs happily, which is very dangerous in real life, and it can potentially kill you to death.
  6. Sleepy Sam is arguably one of the worst enemies in the game due to its intense roaring and players will automatically get eaten by it, thus losing a life.
  7. When Finn and Jake attempt to encounter Sleepy Sam, the latter roars so loud, which will hurt people's ears.
  8. Bad ending: After Finn uses a secret technique to let Hunny Bunny, Sleepy Sam, and Bouncy Bee enter the game, BMO is very upset to both Finn and Jake for entering a game without his permission (even though they realize that it was an accident) and starts doing the same secret technique that Finn did and they will enter in the game, again. Implying that they will suffer the same fate as before.
    • The "Game Over" sound is very unfitting for children to listen, and it looks like the sound is glitching.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Finn, Jake, and BMO are likeable in this episode.
  2. The Computer Song is decent, despite being short.
  3. The opening scene, after Finn and Jake enter the lava pit, is decent.
    • The scene where Finn uses the combo technique is a satisfying way to defeat the three enemies (Sleepy Sam, Hunny Bunny, and Bouncy Bee).
  4. Very unique title card, which features an animated title card, despite "Press Start" being blinking, along with the Story, Storyboard, Writer, and Director having green backgrounds rather than original ones. This could share the same fate in "A Glitch Is a Glitch".

Reception

It has a rating of 7.9/10 on IMDb.
