Haunted Mansion is a 2023 American supernatural horror comedy film directed by Justin Simien, based on Katie Dippold's screenplay.

Plot

A mother and her son hire the services of a motley gang of so-called spiritual experts to clear their home of supernatural intruders.

Bad Qualities

  1. To point out the obvious, the fact that Disney put out a Halloween themed movie in the middle of the summer while also being aside Barbie and Oppenheimer is a terrible idea, which caused it to flop and have $33 million with a $150 million budget.
    • However, this may be a tactic for it to release on Disney+ during November.
  2. Similar to movies like The Smurfs, and its sequel The Smurfs 2, Jack and Jill, Foodfight!, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, The Emoji Movie, Ralph Breaks the Internet, which is another Disney film, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Home Sweet Home Alone, another Disney film, etc. There is product placement everywhere. Sure product placement is mostly not a flaw worth pointing out, bet it’s repetitive in this film. Here are examples, but not limited to:
  3. Just like what they did with Strange World and Elemental, although the latter was positively received, Disney did an awful job at marketing the movie by barely marketing it. Almost no one had ever heard of this film, causing it to bomb. This is also not helped by the current ongoing writer and actor strikes.
  4. Sadly, the story was not as engaging as the original version.
  5. Even the scenes feel very stitched together to follow a storyline.
  6. Some actors didn't do a good performance and you would expect them to, like Danny DeVito for example.
  7. Boring and very flat dialogue, especially with all the product placements.
  8. The characters do not feel as interesting or as unique compared to the 2003 film.
  9. It's another Disney remake, though it is thankfully not an animated remake.

Good Qualities

  1. The costumes and set designs may be nice to look at.
  2. Most of the acting is at least great, despite some being bad.
  3. The music by Kris Bowers is great. It is also an improvement from how he composed Madden NFL 21's soundtrack.
  4. A concept of a Haunted Mansion reboot is great, despite being poorly executed.
  5. The characters, despite not being as interesting or likable as the Eddie Murphy version, are likable.
  6. It's still better than the 2003 original
