Hey You, Pikachu! is a virtual pet Pokémon spin-off video game for the Nintendo 64 developed by Ambrella and published by Nintendo. It was released in Japan on December 12, 1998, and in North America on November 6, 2000. The player is asked to help Professor Oak test the PokéHelper, a device that lets humans communicate with Pokémon. The game is set in the Kanto region between Pewter City and Viridian City, where the player is introduced to a wild Pikachu. The player can communicate with a 256-word database through the Voice Recognition Unit (VRU), a Nintendo 64 hardware accessory that, when paired with a microphone, can comprehend and analyze human speech. Along with speaking with Pikachu, the VRU allows the player to move around and gather items.

Bad Qualities

  1. The game uses the Nintendo 64 VRU which in itself is a bad peripheral. As a result, it is difficult for the game to recognize the player's voice, especially deeper ones.
  2. The game is boring; all the player does is tell Pikachu to do certain things and not much else. All maps are enclosed.
  3. Very little actual way to interact with Pikachu, other than telling him to pick things up.
  4. Rather short yet boring at the same time.
  5. Pikachu runs fine, but in this game, he walks very slowly.
  6. There is no PAL release anywhere in Europe or Australia due to translation reasons. Let alone making Pokémon fans from anywhere in Europe and Oceania unhappy.
  7. Pikachu sometimes does not listen to you no matter how many times you give him commands.

Good Qualities

  1. Excellent graphics for its time, similar to the ones in Pokémon Stadium.
  2. The music is good at best and listenable at worst.
  3. The ending is emotional and well-written.
  4. Pikachu's design is great, and so are the other Pokémon.
  5. Great voice acting, especially from Ikue Ōtani as Pikachu.
  6. It has a unique concept where you can talk to Pikachu for the first time. It is only poorly executed due to the Nintendo 64 VRU's limitations. Had it been made in modern day, it would have been executed much better.

Reception

Hey You, Pikachu! has received mixed reactions. It has a 57% score on Metacritic, a 6/10 from IGN, and a 5.4/10 on IMDb.
