"If Mario Was The Last Man On Earth" is the thirtieth episode of Season 12 and the seven hundred and forty-fifth overall to be uploaded on the SMG4 channel.

Plot

A hungover Mario wakes up to find no one left in the Mushroom Kingdom. As he struggles to cope with his friends' disappearances, he quickly loses his mind and engages in a... surreal adventure.

Why It Lost Everything and Can't Go On

  1. The concept of an episode where Mario thinks he's the last man on Earth sounds like it could be a blast (especially since it can fit in as a classic era episode), but it is extremely poorly executed because of all of this episode's flaws and because of the fact that it isn't even the main focus of the episode.
  2. It's a torture episode for Mario, as he is horribly treated in this episode, even more than many episodes of the series where he's rejected, as he is not invited to a pizza challenge watching just because of his stupidity, how is this even a valid reason to ban someone!?
    • And even despite the fact that he might probably ruined some moments of peoples lifes, it was possibly unintentional and his treatment is still way too unfair.
    • And not only that but Mario was just drunk before this episode event and wasn't his normal self, so this just make things even worse.
  3. This episode could be seen as a rehash of "Gone" from SpongeBob as in this episode, Mario got leave by his friends for no reasons much like that SpongeBob episode where SpongeBob is leave alone by everyone for a stupid reason.
  4. Misleading Title: While Mario is the last on earth in the beginning, it was revealed that he wasn't really the last man on earth but rather it was his friends that did leave him.
  5. This episode is even more mean-spirited than usual and while some of those kind of SPG4 can be funny (such as in "Mario had a BBQ but He Is Not Invited" or "Food Wars" even if the latter one is not a well received episode), here it just painful to watch and just feel like forced comedy, and in fact it is somehow even worse than "Boys vs Girls".
    • Not to mention that everyone are mean to Mario just for a freaking pizza (at least the previous day before this episode event happened), and when Mario was drunk, he didn't really know what he did so being mean like that is just pointless.
    • Unlike "Boys vs Girls", there isn't a single funny mean-spirited comedy, and while yes that episode was pretty bad, it still wasn't that unfunny and painful, just way too mean-spirited but not to the point of being almost impossible to laugh.
  6. Everyone except Mario and possibly Luigi (except for when he joined in with them) are extremely unlikable (including the friendly ones like Fishy Boopkins, Tari, Shroomy and Swagmaster), as everyone reject Mario for absolutely no reasons other than the fact that one time he accidently ruined an event, and even if it was not a good thing that he did, the way they treat him is way too harsh and he doesn't even deserve that.
    • Not to mention that they don't even apologize for this as he once again accidently ruined an event, this time with the biggest pizza, which will give this episode a horrible ending (more on that in another pointer).
  7. The pacing is very inconsistent, as either it is too slow or either it is way too fast, with the beginning being extremely slow and the middle of the episode is where it get faster but not in a good reasons.
  8. Plot Holes:
    • How does Mario survive after falling from real high ? We know that it's a webseries but still he's not injured or anything like that.
    • How does Mario's friends reject him after that he did this, when he previously done even worse stuffs in some other episodes yet they didn't punished him ? Especially that they could just made another pizza to eat after Mario ruined it.
  9. The scene where Mario pisses on a roof, while funny, is somewhat innapropriate, but howewer it depend on your opinion.
  10. The way that Mario did his first video to look at wasn't really that well done and is rather weird, even Mario point called that cringe, even if it was him who did the video, howewer it might have probably been intentional.
  11. The scene where the Luigi head chase Mario, depending on your view is pretty disturbing, especially that he say to Mario "Why Did You Do This?", which just sound even more disturbing especially when you know that Mario didn't know what he's done wrong that day.
  12. Horrible Ending: Mario did fall on the huge pizza and the entire crowd who was there to witness it does attack him, where it wasn't really Mario fault for ruining the pizza event, not to mention that the episode end on a "To Be Continued" message, meaning that this episode even had the nerve to end on a cliffhanger (even though it's a good thing it ended that way before everyone could lay a finger on him).

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Despite the episode having almost no funny moments, at least there's still a few funny moments such as when Mario cause mischief in the city.
  2. Mario and Luigi are likable, and Luigi was the only one who feel bad that Mario is not allowed in the event, despite joining in with everybody.
  3. At least the concept of the episode is actually good (and even would've been better as a classic episode), but poorly executed and not the main focus of the episode.
  4. Despite the horrible ending, it's actually a good thing that the episode freezed at the last second before everybody attacked Mario. Especially because of YouTube's Copyright Policies toning down the violence of the series since even before Meggy debuted. So if this ending were to have been made early in the classic era before the policies happened, it would've showed a full scene of the cast beating the ever living hell out of Mario uncensored, and it would've been much worse.

Reception

The episode received overwhelmingly negative reviews by fans and audiences and is considered to be one of, if not the worst episode of the entire series along with "Boys vs Girls" and "Mario Joins the Circus" because of everyone being mean to Mario and because of the horrible ending.

It currently had a score of 3.8 on IMDb, making it one of the worst reviewed episodes of the series on the site.

Trivia

  • After the blooper was released, fanart was made regarding the episode's ending. This fanart mainly revolves around alternate and extended endings where Mario becomes frustrated with his friends for abandoning him.
    • This is the second episode from Season 12 to result in mass fanart being produced, the first being SMG4: The Cursed Tapes.
  • On December 22, 2022, MediExcalibur2012 has released a video revealing that Meggy carrying JubJub is a direct callback to SMG4: Meggy's Part-Time Job. Additionally, he also revealed that Meggy is the only one that doesn't attack Mario at the end (it's actually JubJub propelling her towards him). Because Meggy looks upset at JubJub, however, her expression blends in with the others and the intended adlib was lost.
  • Hobo Mario appears with a remodeled design, looking less polygonal than his original model from 2007s The Simpsons Game.
  • Some of Lizzie Freeman's voice clips for Meggy were reused in this blooper during the scene of the largest pizza.
    • In a similar way, SMG4's voice lines do not match with what he is saying, similar to Season 9.
  • It is implied that Peach adopted or is in the process of adopting Mario, as there is a document titled "MARIO ADOPTION PAPERS" present in her bedroom.
  • SMG3 is the only known character not present, since he is in the Internet Graveyard.
  • This is the last episode:
    • Before the airing of The Lawsuit Arc. As a result, this is also the last non-arc episode to feature SMG4, Bob, and Fishy Boopkins in their original designs before being redesigned during the arc finale.
    • To feature X and FM outside of flashbacks in the Mario Does Things series.
  • Mario's naked N64 model features red shorts, possibly to match the Gmod model of Mario in shorts from Super Mario Odyssey.
  • This is the first appearances of SMG1 and SMG2 since "SMG4: The Pawn Business", as well as their last appearances outside of an arc until "SMG4: All I Want For Christmas Is Mario To FREAKIN BEHAVE".
