Jurassic Fart is the fifth episode of the first part of Total Drama Island (2023), the fifth episode in the reboot/sixth season of Total Drama, and the one hundred twenty-second episode overall.
Plot
The teams must race through the island while chased by raptors while having to deal with uncontrollable flatulence thanks to a bean filled breakfast. Having had enough of the show, a scared camper, Damien, campaigns to get himself eliminated. Chase abandons Emma to a raptor while Ripper fulfills his dream. Julia's positive vibes turn out to be an act as she reveals her true colors, which would have remained secret had MK not shared it to the whole world. Damien saves his teammates from a raptor and decides his intention to win the game. But as repayment, his team votes him off, fulfilling a wish he no longer wanted to come true.
Why It's a Jurassic Fart Indeed
- The main problem with this episode is that it contains an overabundance of fart jokes throughout the whole episode. In fact, the remaining twelve contestants, sans Julia due to skipping breakfast, repeatedly fart throughout the episode from eating beans after breakfast, resulting in this episode containing 36 instances of the players farting in the episode (37 if counting the raptor), to the point where it will get on your last nerves. Below is a complete list of scenes which involved a player farting in order:
- Priya embarrassingly farting in front of Damien.
- In the following order, MK, Chase, Bowie, Wayne, and Raj all fart.
- Emma insulting the players who farted before letting out a very loud fart that is obnoxious and disgusting to hear at the same time to the point where it sounds like nails on a chalkboard, causing Wayne, Raj, Julia, Priya, and Bowie to all cover their ears due to how loud the sound is (albeit Wayne and Raj are shown giggling from finding Emma's farting funny).
- Emma farting in the confessional.
- Emma farting offscreen twice, which caused Zee and Millie to become shocked.
- In the following scene, Emma lets out a loud fart that causes her skirt to blow up as she holds it, not before Ripper starts flirting with her about her "power".
- Chase farting when he asks Zee a question, and in the following scene, Chase farts again, and then does it 4 more times while his buttocks move and stretch in a bizarre and grotesque way. Zee then tells Chase to frantically clench his butt to stop the farting after he does it 2 more times.
- Damien and Priya farting while they hide from the raptors.
- Millie silently farting, which impresses Damien and Priya, but they both later take it back due to it smelling foul.
- Ripper farting with Millie's pillow placed on his butt.
- In the following scene, after Ripper puts Millie's pillow out of his butt, he lets out a loud fart due to his butt exploding, only for the raptors to hear Ripper's fart from a distance.
- During the Hockey Bros' plan, Wayne farts while he's explaining Raj their idea to get to the other side of the island.
- Zee letting go of Chase's butt, and when they start to run from the raptor, Chase lets out a big fart on the raptor's face.
- Chase desperately farting while hugging Chris's legs, with Emma glaring at him for his actions.
- While Ripper, Millie, Priya and Damien are running, they fart repeatedly in the kitchen.
- After Ripper takes Millie's pillow out of his but, he farts for 48 seconds, managing to tie the world record.
- After a raptor was force-fed beans by Damien, it lets out a big fart on a running stove's open fire, which causes the kitchen to explode.
- Ripper farting prior to the episode's elimination ceremony.
- Priya farting at the elimination ceremony.
- Chase farting before being interrupted by Chris, not before he is interrupted by Zee farting loudly.
- Aside from the raptors, this episode's challenge is literally just a carbon copy of the challenges in "Finders Creepers" in Revenge of the Island and "Moon Madness" in All-Stars.
- In one scene that was mentioned in WIAJFI#1, Emma's loud fart causes her skirt to blow up as she holds it, which can be heavily unconvincing towards younger audiences.
- Ripper is not only unlikable, but he is also an idiot in this episode, as he:
- Uses Millie's pillow on his butt to muffle the farts instead of his own, with his excuse being that he doesn’t want to get pinkeye, which is infuriating, since not only could said effect be carried over to Millie afterwards, but Ripper easily could have packed an extra pillow before he even came to the island.
- Decides not to eat the ajwain and instead just lets out his so-called "world record" fart right when a raptor was just near his own team. And they only managed to escape the raptor because Damien managed to shove the beans in the raptor’s mouth.
- In the beginning of the episode, Wayne was seen panicking about his matters being gone, but then it turns into a bunch of poop jokes. It's so bad to the point where even Julia left the table and skipped breakfast entirely.
- In one scene, Damien force-feeds a raptor by grabbing a pot and shoving the beans in its mouth, which doesn't make sense at all.
- Massive waste of character development: Damien changing his mind about getting voted off could have benefited from character development as the series progressed, but instead, he winded up getting voted off after he changed his mind and no longer wanted to get voted off anymore, so as a result, this elimination was heavily mistimed, and as a result, Damien's time in the season ends too early.
Redeeming Qualities
- Although the challenge is similar to "Finders Creepers" in Revenge of the Island and "Moon Madness" in All-Stars, the concept of it involving the participants racing through the island while they are being hunted by raptors while continuously farting would've been an interesting concept for a challenge; due to the overuse of fart jokes in the episode, it was executed horribly.
- Caleb, Axel, Nichelle, and Scary Girl, who never farted once before this episode, are absent here as they were all eliminated prior to the episode.
- On that note, Julia was also the only contestant to never be shown farting here as she didn't get to eat the beans at the beginning.
- The animation and voice acting are still top-notch.
- Julia’s vicious rant towards one of the raptors is considered to be very top notch by viewers as it shows Julia’s true colors as a mean girl.
- Despite what WIAJFI#5 says, Damien's act of saving his teammates is admittedly epic to watch, despite being nonsensical.
- As said in WIAJFI#4, Ripper being unlikable in this episode can be justified as he, like Chase, was intentionally written to be unlikable, as per Terry McGurrin.
Trivia
General
- It is shown that Zee can move without his prosthetic leg, but not in the same dexterity, rather he'd be hopping.
- According to Terry McGurrin, he at first had reservations over seeing this episode produced when its plot was discussed, but it was eventually won over by Neha Kohli's first draft.
- It was confirmed by MK that Millie didn't vote Ripper in the previous episode; instead, she voted Scary Girl mainly because she stalled in giving the skull to Chris so she could give it a makeover because she thought "it looked dead".
Continuity
- Similar to Dave from Pahkitew Island's "Hurl and Go Seek" after getting rejected by Sky, Damien campaigned with buttons to get himself voted off.
- When Raj and Wayne fart, they both say, "Turbo boost!", most likely relating to when Brody mentioned that when Geoff says, "Turbo Boost!", that's a sign meaning that he is about to fart in the finale in The Ridonculous Race.
References
- The episode's name is a reference to Michael Crichton's 1990 novel Jurassic Park and its subsequent Universal film series.
- In the scene where Ripper says, "Raptors can't open doors!", this parodies one of the climax's scenes from both the first novel and its 1993 film adaptation by Steven Spielburg.
- As with other depictions of raptors (namely the velociraptor) in popular culture, the ones here are clearly based on the movies. As per fossil records, the actual velociraptor is actually the size of a chicken and covered with feathers. In fact, the dinosaur in the movie is modelled after the Deinonychus based on its appearance and supposed intelligence, but with the size of the Utahraptor.
- The way Emma's skirt blows up from her fart is reminiscent to the iconic scene of the late Marilyn Monroe's white dress blowing up in Billy Wilder's 1955 romantic comedy film The Seven Year Itch.
- Raj mentions the Toronto Raptors, a Canadian NBA Basketball team.
Goofs
- One of Zee's "Vote for Damien" buttons was on his right calf, which shouldn't be possible to stay on as it might fall off.
- The recording of Julia roasting the raptor is different from when she did so in the previous episode.
- The tone of her voice wasn't as angry and snobby as it was here.
- The recording cuts out to her calling the raptor a "halitosisaurus".
- In one of Chase's confessionals, the Frogs of Death icon is displayed, despite Chase not competing on said team.
