Logan is a 2017 American superhero film. It stars Hugh Jackman in his final performance as the titular character (until Deadpool & Wolverine came out) and is the tenth film in the X-Men film series and the third and final installment in the Wolverine trilogy following X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and The Wolverine (2013). The film, which takes inspiration from the "Old Man Logan" comics storyline by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, follows an aged Wolverine and an extremely ill Charles Xavier who defends a young mutant named Laura from the villainous Reavers led by Donald Pierce and Zander Rice. The film is produced by 20th Century Fox, Marvel Entertainment, TSG Entertainment, and The Donners' Company, and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is directed by James Mangold (who co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Green and Scott Frank), from a story by Mangold. In addition to Jackman, the film also stars Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, and Dafne Keen.
Plot
In 2029, the mutant population has shrunken significantly due to genetically modified plants designed to reduce mutant powers, and the X-Men have disbanded. Logan (portrayed by Hugh Jackman), whose power to self-heal is dwindling, has surrendered himself to alcohol and now earns a living as a chauffeur. He takes care of the ailing old Professor X (portrayed by Patrick Steward) whom he keeps hidden away. One day, a female stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura (portrayed by Dafne Keen) to the Canadian border. At first, he refuses, but the Professor has been waiting for a long time for her to appear. Laura possesses extraordinary fighting prowess and is in many ways like Wolverine. She is pursued by sinister figures working for a powerful corporation; this is because they made her, with Logan's DNA. A decrepit Logan is forced to ask himself if he can or even wants to put his remaining powers to good use. It would appear that shortly, the times in which they were able to put the world to rights with razor-sharp claws and telepathic powers are now over.
Why It Still Has Time
- Unlike most superhero films that are commonly in the action-comedy genre, Logan is a drama film about accepting one's death that uses superheroes to deliver its message, and it was executed extremely well.
- The performances, particularly from Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Professor X/Charles Xavier, are fantastic.
- Wolverine is finally shown in all of his berserker glory.
- X-23 is just an awesome character helped by Dafne Keen's quiet and calm, yet fierce performance.
- Despite the film's content, it isn't completely about bloodshed and swearing; the film has positive messages about family and life, such as the dinner scene. It also features Christian elements included, such as Eden's name and the Munson family.
- It has a pretty meta moment where Logan looks at a fictional X-Men comic that has him, Storm, Cyclops, Rogue, Colossus, and Professor X and says that it's "Ice cream for bedwetters".
- Donald Pierce and Zander Rice are both thoroughly despicable villains.
- Great soundtrack, it even features Johnny Cash's "The Man Comes Around".
- His cover of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails was also featured in the first trailer of the film.
- The saddest moments hit hard; especially the tank seizure, Charles's death, and of course, Logan's death.
- It was a grand and emotional way to send off two of superhero cinema's greatest characters: Wolverine (until he returned in Deadpool & Wolverine) and Professor X.
The Only Bad Quality
- Due to Marvel not having the film rights to the X-Men during production, the X-Men comics have a fake brand.
Reception
The film was released on March 3, 2017, and received acclaim from both critics and audiences. It is considered by many to be the best X-Men movie and one of the greatest superhero movies of all time, with many favorably comparing it to The Dark Knight.
