Magical Girl Site is (魔法少女サイト) is a psychological horror magical girl anime series produced by production dóA based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Kentaro Sato, which is a spinoff/sequel to the manga Magical Girl Apocalypse. It premiered on April 6, 2018, with the first episode being pre-released on March 18 of the same year during the Magical Festa event.
Plot
Aya Asagiri is a 14-year-old middle school girl who has problems both at school with bullying and at home from her brother's cruel abuse. One day after getting punched, kicked, and choked by her cruel brother, a suspicious website pops up on her computer screen, showing a creepy-looking person. This person appears to take pity on her and announces that she will grant Aya magical powers. Later at school, Aya finds a gun that mysteriously appears in her locker. She is soon cornered by bullies and with nothing to lose, Aya fires the gun at them. The shot causes the bullies to disappear, but to her horror she finds out that they have somehow been hit by a train nearby and died. Aya feels as though she had somehow killed them and is confused to find herself with longer red hair and blood flowing out of her eyes. She later finds out that she is not alone, when a classmate reveals that she is also a magical girl. The classmate, known as Tsuyuno Yatsumura, becomes one of her new friends, while offering to help her. Tsuyuno teaches Aya about magical girls and the power she has acquired. However, the two girls do not know the reason for something that resembles a countdown clock on the website, and they fear it may be something really bad. After meeting a group of other fellow magical girls, all with different powers and abilities of their own, Tsuyuno and Aya attempt to discover what the countdown really means, all while trying to make sure no one knows about their powers.
Not-So-Magical Qualities
- This anime adaptation from this manga of the same name feels like it didn't exist. By understanding, it probably only exists to capitalize on the dark magical girl genre just like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which has similar themes.
- Its writing is more amateurish but worse than its manga.
- Same as the manga, it's still a nonstop series of events about Aya and her friends enduring incomprehensible pain against their tormentors.
- The main protagonist, Aya Asagiri, is much more useless than in the manga. However, she still has the same traits and actions found from there.
- The rest of the magical girls in this series are hit-or-miss in this story and are never developed.
- The series takes similar horror anime, Higurashi: When They Cry, and Elfen Lied to a more modern take on the next level and tries it WAY TOO seriously by missing the point and attempting be mature just like the manga.
- Since being a horror AND a magical girl series, it clearly tries to make it TOO scary enough, with plenty of gore. But it makes a lot of scenes found from the manga to be too repulsive and unpleasant to sit through.
- For that, it doesn't even feel like a horror anime; it's just mediocre.
- Despite it being faithful to the manga, they added too much filler and alter scenes that weren't in the manga.
- They even removed lesser plot points like how Kaname described Aya during his father's beatings, why Kichiro Misumi kidnapped Kaname, the relationship between Aya and Makoto Hinomoto along with more about Yatsumura, and Keisuke's friendship with Kaname.
- Also, it has lots of moments that are very misfortunate just like the manga but worse and even more unfaithful whereas the scenes were not found from the manga, making it a loose adaptation:
- Kaname kicks Aya, starts being hysterical by flipping up his face, cover his mouth, and then jumping on Aya's bed to choke her.
- Aya and her friends being weak and unable to stop Kaname.
- Yatsumura nearly died and almost been turned into a Site Admin.
- Aya getting surrounded by Shota and Erika revealing the collar of the cat, Mya, to Aya and saying that "the guts went everywhere", revealing to Aya that she killed her kitten.
- Kaname revealed the panties to Keisuke and taunted him of how much he will use those and used him to commit suicide.
- Kaname crawling to get Kosame's box cutter to heal him while moaning in his thoughts about God and keeping Aya out of trouble.
- Abysmal, yet questionable production values for its animation and character design along with often lots of art balancing errors like Nana's face being different in every episode along with one of Sayuki Ringa's Yakuza guards' eyes look very messed up to the right.
- Same as the plot, the animation is beyond amateurish and over-the-top like the manga along with grotesque character expressions because... HORROR.
- Speaking of Production DoA', who are new, none of the anime's production members barely have any experience working on it or even read the manga but try to cram in new scenes just to make it a more generic horror series like the manga.
- A confusing mess of horror anime with inconsistent pacing that makes no sense.
- One of the things that ruined the manga's source material, was reducing the role of Aya's male classmate, Makoto Hinomoto, who appears as a cameo in episode 1, and his scenes with the relationship with Aya from the manga are removed for no reason, probably time constraints.
- Just like the manga, it still has the same mean-spirited and cruel nature, but worse by making Sarina, her friends, and Kaname even eviler than they were in the manga.
- The title feels like a fanfiction about a haunted site on the internet as same as the manga that was based on.
- It has a lot of unlikeable characters that are just kind of malicious Japanese stereotypes for no reason with villains being hit-or-miss:
- Kaname Asagiri, Aya's older brother, is still the same selfish, cruel scumbag that he is from the manga, and he still abuses Aya like this, since his sadism is worse than Sarina.
- Just like the manga, he's still rubbish as a villain who has no build-up and any purpose to greater narrative of the story.
- Since being unlikeable, Kaname has a lot of screentime from the anime, and he never stops stalking Aya.
- His motivations were left from the manga and is just about how he described his father and the human race as scums only in the anime.
- He also still has same traits and goals found from the manga doing things like using Nijimi's panties by threatening a store cashier, Keisuke Naoto to commit suicide, stealing magic sticks, killing Nijimi in self-defense with no remorse, and not getting into custody as punishment when he was kidnapped by Detective Kichiro Misumi, instead he is tortured and sodomized.
- His blue hairstyle, unlike the manga, is a straight-up rip-off of Shinpei Sakamoto from My First Girlfriend Is a Gal.
- Sarina Shizukume, Aya's classmate who only bullies her for being ungrateful, and uses her friends to keep Aya out of trouble.
- She still has the same traits from bullying Aya but very sadistic. But does the same things found from the manga like vandalizing Aya's locker, desk, and class table, pulling Aya's head down to the toilet as her face drowns, using an older male student to assault Aya, scaring Aya with a box cutter, telling Nijimi about where Rina Shioi is, and tried to kill Aya and Yatsumura.
- Aya's father is still an abusive parent to the family as he still pressures Kaname into studying and hits him as a disappointment; it's still the source of Kaname's sadistic complex nature from abusing Aya as a stress relief. His scenes from the manga were butchered along with how Kaname described him.
- Kaname Asagiri, Aya's older brother, is still the same selfish, cruel scumbag that he is from the manga, and he still abuses Aya like this, since his sadism is worse than Sarina.
- Keisuke Naoto is just another pop star idol fanboy who serves no purpose to the main narrative of the story. His friendship with Kaname is removed.
- The first episode didn't stay close to the manga, instead they just butchered some scenes that were in the manga and alter them.
- Episode 9 expects viewers to show how evil Kaname is when he uses Nijimi's panties and then tried to steal all the magic sticks, but nothing else matters. He doesn't care if he's evil. This really feels like the writers are giving up writing Kaname.
- Uncharismatic characterization, even in edgy/horror anime standards of the 2010s.
- Just like the manga, it lacks the charm of being an inspiration of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and every horror anime.
- It's also an insult and disgrace to what made Puella Magi Madoka Magica so special for its disloyalty of how it handles the horror aspects.
- It suffers the same case from other series like DICE: The Cube That Changes Everything, and The Devil's Boy that bares similar themes and nature. All of them probably have wasted potential and does that have a premise that is interesting enough, but poorly executed.
- Some episodes have deceptive and very lazy titles that some of them have poor writing, notably only "Magical Girl Site", "The Successor and the Transfer Student", and "God Won't Abandon Me" for example.
Magical Qualities
- Magical Girl Apocalypse, the author's first manga series to its spin off and predecessor should have been adapted into an anime before Magical Girl Site, that way, it'll explained the plot holes.
- Good chemistry and relationships between Aya and Yatsumura.
- While nothing special, the animation is good and decent enough in 2010s anime standards.
- The character designs can provide a wide array of standard anime girl types and indeed adapt Kentaro Sato's 2013 art style. For example, Yatsumura's eyelashes are yellow, but later black, a year later.
- The opening and ending themes are amazing to hear.
- Keisuke's role is reduced shortly in order to focus more on the main story.
- Its dark magical girl concept of receiving magical girl sticks from a dark website is an interesting concept, but it was poorly executed because it kind of rips off a light novel series, Magical Girl Raising Project, which is another Puella Magi Madoka Magica-inspired series.
- It has some good disturbing/scary moments, despite them being too mean-spirited and unbearable to watch.
- Sarina does redeem herself for her bullying just like in the manga and joins Aya's team to stop the Site Administrators and an event called "Tempest."
- While the voice acting isn't worth the show, it's still decent.
- It's satisfying to see how Kaname deserved to get tortured by Detective Kichiro Misumi for all the cruel abuse and killing that he did to Aya and others in the final episode.
- The Site Admins are much different than the "Witches" from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
- Few likeable characters, such as Aya herself, Yatsumura, Rina, Nijimi, Sayuki, Asahi, Kosame, Kyoharu, and Mikari, despite they didn't have more character development.
- Of course, Yatsumura wasn't a rip-off of Homura Akemi from Puella Magi Madoka Magica and doesn't have similar powers. Even better when Yatsumura doesn't become a site admin named Ni in the manga and is free from Site Admin Nana's' influence.
- Aya's mother is a nice character who is aware of her husband's abuse on Kaname.
- Speaking of Detective Kichiro Misumi, he’s the only good male character who is not as cruel or evil than Kaname ever was. Sadly, he doesn't have more screentime.
- The last two episodes, while not perfect, are much better than the previous ones.
- They did have "Tempest", an event that marks the destruction of Earth and start anew as an overarching plot.

Reception
The first episode received a score of 2.8 on Anime News Network.
Just like the manga that was based on, it was mixed to negative reviews and panned by Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Magical Girl fans alike for its mean-spirited nature, and the depiction of school bullying and sibling abuse. Even the rest of the magical girls and the villains were the subjects of being underdeveloped, along with being hit or miss.
It also has a score of 6.5/10 on MyAnimeList as well as having a score of 5.9/10 on IMDb.
