Considering that it's what tided us over in the lead-up to SMG4's one million subscribers celebration, that Michael Jordan anti-drug PSA applies here. You can tell by the look on Mario's face, that he did not enjoy his time under the big top.

"Mario Joins the Circus" (stylised as Mario joins the Circus) is the 31st episode of the sixth season of SMG4.

Synopsis

After burning down Peach's Castle, uhh...a lot of times, Princess Peach has had enough of Mario's usual retardness and kicks him out...who stumbles upon the circus!

Why Mario Should Never Join the Circus

1. The video is very mean spirited towards Mario, he gets kicked out just for burning the castle (despite it happening multiple times, yet he doesn't get punished) and he gets sent to a circus where he gets tortured even more.
2. This video managed to make Toad, SMG4, Peach, Luigi (sorta) and Toast Shy Guy very unlikable (all of which are much more out of character then usual, especially Toast Shy Guy), for how all of them participate in kicking Mario out of the castle. Even for characters like Toad who dislike Mario, it has never gotten to the point where they take pleasure in Mario's misery. In addition, Princess Peach is arguably at her worst for being the one ordering Mario to be thrown out.
   • Toast Shy Guy is usually a hilarious joke character obsessed with toast and shouting his catchphrase, "YEAH TOAST!", but he was never mean-spirited ever in his life (aside from whenever somebody tries to take his toast away). But here? He just acts like he's in a role where a much better character should be in, like one of the Teletubbies or Old Man Hobo. This is especially hurtful to other Mario fans who see Shy Guys as their favorite character/enemy.
   • What makes this worse is that SMG4, Toad, Peach, Luigi (again, sorta) and Toast Shy Guy never got punished for how they acted with Mario, making them all massive Karma Houdinis in this episode.
3. After Mario leaves the castle in tears, with audio of Eric Cartman crying, the gang (even Luigi, who is performing the "YEEEAAAAH!!!" line from The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again) throws a party.
4. This video can be considered offensive towards actual Mario fans, and while it is possible for some fans to already be offended by Mario's retarded behavior, this video can get offensive to everyone due to everybody treating Mario badly.
5. During the video, Mario gets forced to participate in games that would get people severely injured or even killed in real life.
6. A scene where Donkey Kong attacks Mario just for throwing a banana in the wrong way.
7. While not too different from more later SMG4 videos, the overabundance of voice clips and GMod can be excessive and unfunny.
8. Mario's circus trip feels way too over the top cruel for a stupid mistake like burning the castle (which as mentioned before, he's regularly done). If anything, the audience doesn't feel sympathy for Mario regretting his mistakes. They instead would feel sorry for Mario having to go through the circus torture.
9. The editing here is a lot more inferior, slower, and sloppy compared to the previous episodes, this is mostly because this episode, along with the previous episode Toad has a secret, was entirely edited by Martin Yeung rather than Luke Lerdwichagul himself, mostly due to Luke finishing his exams as well as finishing other videos such as SMG4 MEGA COMPILATION - 5 years of retardedness and SSENMODNAR DELUXE - 1 MILLION SUB SPECIAL.
   • These scenes in particular include Luigi just laying down on the floor while still caught on fire and saying "Oh no" rather than just spazzing around, screaming and burning to death, the fire disappearing as soon as Peach walks in, and Mario being surrounded by the clowns.
10. Even by SMG4 standards, it was a very strange episode. It would fit much more better as an OnyxKing episode than a real SMG4 episode.
11. Horrible ending: To put it briefly, the aforementioned Shy Guy saves Mario from the circus...only for the Shy Guy to throw Mario into a giant toaster in order to kill him, just to give one big fat middle finger to Mario.

Redeeming Qualities

1. Bob and Mario are still likable and funny in this video.
2. Some of the mean-spirited scenes can make unintentional comedy such as the way Donkey Kong stretches Mario like an accordion.
3. Nowadays, this episode is slowly starting to feel tame since there have been a lot of episodes in the modern era that are much worse than here.
4. The idea of a circus themed SMG4 episode does look great on paper, but it would've been a better one if you removed all of the unlikable moments of everyone (except for Bob, who as said before, is the only likable character), the harsh moments and the bad editing.
5. Toast Shy Guy would go back to his toast simping ways and never do something like this to Mario ever again after this episode.
6. OnyxKing's entry for SMG4's two million subscribers collab has an alternate ending where after getting drunk from partying, SMG4, Peach and Toad would get their comeuppance by Mario as he throws bananas at them, causing Donkey Kong to attack them (despite them going "OH SH*T" than screaming and for some reason, causing them to explode than just show DK beating the three up, as usual with OnyxKing's editing). Bob compliments Mario, agreeing that they got what they deserved and they high fived each other. Sadly, it didn't make it in. But if it did, it would've been a massive improvement.

Reception

Despite having more likes than dislikes, the video was panned by a huge chunk of SMG4 fans. Many people compared it to the infamous SML video "Jeffy's Bad Word" due to both episodes having SML's and SMG4's incarnations of Mario being tortured for stupid reasons (SMG4 Mario doing an act that he has done before without being punished except in that episode and SML Mario punishing Jeffy), and many fans called it one of SMG4's worst episodes. In fact, this episode is so hated that it was one of the few SMG4 videos to get a "reception" part on the SMG4 wiki.
