Married to Money is the episode of the ninth season of SpongeBob SquarePants and the second segment of the one hundred ninety-six episode overall.
Summary
Mr. Krabs meets and falls in love with an anthropomorphic pile of cash named Cashina. Unknown to Mr. Krabs, Cashina is a robot piloted by Plankton who intends to scam Mr. Krabs into giving him the Krabby Patty secret formula.
ScumBob Qualities
- First of all, this episode is yet another rehash of "Imitation Krabs" from season two, as both episodes are about Plankton disguising as a robot to try and steal the secret formula from the Krusty Krab and SpongeBob initially trusting the imposter until the end of the episode.
- Mr. Krabs' character was exaggerated to ridiculous levels as he is shown to be willing to marry a pile of cash, just because he loves money. Even though it was a robot, Eugene's money fetish has gone too far.
- Also, this episode's premise is sort of similar to "To Love a Patty", which episode is about SpongeBob falling in love with a Krabby Patty. Both these episodes are about a character falling in love with a stuff, so it counts as objectophilia, too.
- Most of the comedy in this episode is unfunny and poor, like the annoying running gag with Mr. Krabs getting electrocuted every time he kisses Cashina.
- Pearl's only purpose in this episode is to be made for filler's sake.
- Spongebob, Patrick, and Squidward just come off as bland in this episode as they don't have that much materiel to work with. Sure, Spongebob decorates the Krusty Krab for the wedding, but that's it.
- Predictably and unnecessarily sad ending: When Mr. Krabs is going to tell the formula to Cashina, he starts sweating and his eyes get watery. One of his teardrops falls on Cashina, causing her to explode and revealing Plankton inside it. After getting shocked at this, Mr. Krabs starts to get angry and then depressed, saying he's been alone for so long and "his feelings were real although Cashina wasn't". After saying Krabs was being crazy, Plankton gets out of the room and declares that one day he'll get the formula one day. Mr. Krabs breaks down and starts crying in sorrow. Even a decent chunk of fans who hate Mr. Krabs thought that this ending was too mean-spirited towards him, especially since Plankton got away scot-free, at least on-screen.
- It's also predictable. As mentioned above, it's a rehash of "Imitation Krabs", we can guess Plankton's plan will eventually fail.
- After that, a bellhop tries to console Mr. Krabs, only to say he has to tip him. Mr. Krabs then gives him a nickel as the episode ends, and that's it. The ending is not only predictable and sad, but it also fades out without any further thoughts.
- It's also predictable. As mentioned above, it's a rehash of "Imitation Krabs", we can guess Plankton's plan will eventually fail.
- Additionally, this plot forgets that Mr Krabs is in love with someone else already, Mrs Puff.
Married Qualities
- The episode started well until we got to the part where Mr. Krabs meets Plankton's robot, Cashina.
- Depending on your view, Pearl's role in this episode is funny.
- No matter how hard Plankton tried to marry Mr. Krabs using his Cashina robot, at least he got what he deserved in the end.
- While the ending is depressing, Mr. Krabs ending up heartbroken can serve as a somewhat rightful comeuppance for his actions against Plankton in episodes like "Plankton's Regular" and "One Coarse Meal".
- SpongeBob is still a nice character nonetheless along with Patrick and Squidward.
- Cashina's character design looks cute.
