Max, formerly known or still known as HBO Max in some markets, is an American subscription video-on-demand over-the-top streaming service. It is a proprietary unit of Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming & Interactive Entertainment, which is itself a division of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). First launched (as HBO Max) in the United States on May 27, 2020, the service offers content from the libraries of Warner Bros., Discovery Channel, HBO, CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Animal Planet, Eurosport, and their related brands. The service also carries first-run original programming under the "Max Originals" banner, programming from the HBO pay television service, and content acquired via either third-party library deals (such as those with film studios for pay television rights) or co-production agreements (including, among others, those with BBC Studios and Sesame Workshop).
Why It's Not the One to Watch Anymore
- A long list of shows was removed from the service in August 2022,
- The relaunch of Max (The HBO Max and Discovery+ merger) on May 27, 2023, was the worst, mainly because of the removal of the "HBO" name, and "Max" is just generic.
- Recently, just like Netflix, they plan to cut costs on the children's content from the service, including their animated shows that were still in development, proving that they’re now treating animation like garbage.
- To make matters worse, the company has recently removed 30 animation titles from the service in the U.S., including content from Cartoon Network, Sesame Workshop, and Cartoonito. Even some shows that are still in production were also removed, which could be a sign that the shows are canceled.
- Shows like Infinity Train, Final Space, Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart, Uncle Grandpa, OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, Little Ellen, Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, Ben 10 (2005) (which was replaced by the terrible 2016 reboot), Dexter's Laboratory, The Ollie & Moon Show (which is third-party), etc. had been removed from the platform, writing off the shows, leaving only Samurai Jack, Adventure Time, The Powerpuff Girls (2016), Ben 10 (2016), and possibly Steven Universe the only Cartoon Network shows to still be available on HBO Max to this day.
- To make it even worse, these shows had also been removed from the official (HBO) Max and CN YouTube channels and even extended to Cartoon Network's website and social media. This even goes as far to even getting Infinity Train's soundtrack removed from Apple Music! All of this indicates that the executives in charge of Warner Bros. Discovery are canceling shows like Infinity Train and removing all mention of them from videos and social media just to save money.
- They also removed over 200 classic Looney Tunes shorts from the platform (as well as the last 3 seasons of The Flintstones) as the licensing agreement expired.
- They initially canceled Coyote vs. Acme and turned it into a tax write-off. But the good news is that Warner Bros. reversed this and allowed the director to shop it to other interested buyers.
- Other animated projects had moved from Max in favor of other streaming services and networks. But thankfully, they are at least saved from cancellation.
- On May 9th, 2023, they removed Clarence from the platform for unknown reasons.
- Ever since 2023, they made lots of mediocre or bad original shows such as season 2 of Clone High and Velma.
- There's an annoying glitch on the TV app where it sends you back to the start of the show you're watching if you fast-forward.
Redeeming Qualities
- They used to be a great streaming service back during their launch until the 2022 Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
- They still make good shows here and there such as Tiny Toons Looniversity, Jellystone!, and Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.
- As mentioned in pointer number 8, a lot of the animated shows removed were moved to other streaming services; for instance, a lot of Hanna-Barbera's catalog was moved to Tubi.
- Speaking to it, the shows HBO Max Originals moved to iTunes and Netflix, especially Latin America.
