Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (also known as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, initialized as MGM; often referred to as Metro; common metonym: the Lion or Leo) is an American media company, involved primarily in the production and distribution of feature films and television programs. One of the world's oldest film studios, MGM's corporate headquarters are located at 245 North Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills, California. In March 2022, MGM Holdings was acquired by Amazon for $8.5 billion.
Why The Lion Roars
- They're responsible for bringing us Tom and Jerry (now owned by Warner Bros.), one of the most beloved cartoon franchises of all time. They were also responsible for other cartoon characters like Droopy.
- They are responsible for some of the most universally acclaimed movies of all time, like the Rocky series, Pink Panther, the James Bond franchise, the original Poltergeist, Julius Caesar, Adam's Rib, Thelma & Louise, Licourice Pizza, North by Northwest, Singin' in the Rain, A Christmas Story, Jailhouse Rock, The Wizard of Oz, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Network and Ben-Hur.
- They made some good animated movies, like All Dogs Go to Heaven and The Secret of NIMH.
- As a mini-major, they've been doing a good job working together with other major film studios including the aforementioned Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony Pictures and Universal.
- They hold the rights to United Artists, American International Pictures and Orion Pictures, expanding its library vacated by the original pre-1986 library.
- They had their own cartoon division, which shut down in 1957. This division employed legendary cartoonists such as Tex Avery and Hanna-Barbera.
- Awesome soundtrack in many of their films.
- During the 2010s, they worked with other film distributors to help release some of their films.
- A lot of their films also have introduced us to many well-known and iconic stars such as Gene Kelly, Spencer Tracy and Charlton Heston.
- Their motto "Ars Gratia Artis", which is the Latin for "Art for Art's Sake", shows their dedication to the art form of film.
- They have their very own TV networks, Epix, MGM+ and MGM HD.
- They have also produced many amazing TV shows like The Handmaid's Tale, Vikings and Fargo.
- Throughout the years, they had amassed a massive film library, consisting of over 5200 films.
- They won 181 Oscars throughout their existence including 12 Best Pictures.
- During the Golden Age of Hollywood, they excelled in musicals, drama, and other genres of film featuring such iconic stars, becoming the most prominent movie studio in that period.
- During their time as a major studio, they are a powerful and dominant entertainment company producing more successful films than any other Hollywood studio during the Golden Age, and even today as a mini-major, they've been producing many film hits, showing they still got it after all these years.
- Their logo is really well-made and very iconic, and it has evolved greatly throughout the years as differing lions are being used with opening their films, reaching its zenith with their 2021 logo. Additionally, their mascot, Leo the Lion, has become of the most famous movie icons of all time.
- Overall, they're one of the most successful film studios of all time.
Bad Qualities
- While most of their films are great, some of them are mediocre or even awful, such as The Addams Family (2019) and its 2021 sequel, Showgirls, Bio-Dome, Inchon, Basic Instinct 2, Die Another Day, Sleepover, Supernova (2000), Heaven's Gate, Igor, Zookeeper, and Sherlock Gnomes.
- Some of their films have bombed at the box office.
- Due to years of suffering financial troubles and an unstable series of buyouts, the once glorious major studio MGM had to cast out its pre-1986 film library through Turner Entertainment. Turner was subsequently purchased by Warner, taking MGM's library with it. Nowadays, it operates as a "mini-major" studio, while its former backlot is now property of Sony Pictures (Columbia Pictures' parent). Thankfully though, this hasn't stopped them from doing their work.
Trivia
- Warner Bros. (via Turner Entertainment Co.) currently own the rights to MGM's pre-1986 film and television library since 1996; and while MGM themselves still owns the rest of their library.
