Model Sponge is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from Season 7.

Plot

Listening in on a conversation, SpongeBob thinks he got fired. So, when he finds jobs, he decides to be an actor for a sponge commercial. But he thought the commercial had something different where a sponge is the star, until he found out that it was for an actual sponge for cleaning.

Off-Model Qualities

  1. SpongeBob is dumb enough to think that he was fired from the job he loves by the guy who needs him most. And without SpongeBob, as shown in multiple episodes, Mr. Krabs' business would crash down since there wouldn't be a good cook to serve customers.
  2. An unfunny beginning where after SpongeBob hears Mr. Krabs say "It's time to let the little guy go", he tries to make Squidward the little guy so he would leave instead of SpongeBob.
    • After Mr. Krabs gets off the phone, it turns out he was taking about a scallop and not SpongeBob. Which was ludicrous, but pointless. It was like the writers didn't have a twist to write and just did this. Plus, it was revealed way too early.
  3. An weird face (design by Robertryan Croy) that SpongeBob makes when he accepts that he's the little guy, it could be more fitting for Aaron Springer's episode.
  4. Multiple animation errors, including one with SpongeBob with his sleeves on, even though he was stripped.
  5. The director's voice is so loud that you can tell the voice actor behind it was clearly screaming out every single line he says while reading the episode's script.
  6. It's a real SpongeBob torture episode, as in the second to final scene, where SpongeBob is treated like an actual sponge. Cleaning a bathroom set until he quits when he gets to the toilet.
  7. The dream sequence where SpongeBob believes he's actually famous is pretty weird and comes out of nowhere.
    • Also in the commercial scene in the episode, even though we've seen him like this multiple times, SpongeBob had to be naked in the scene, which is a bit disturbing.
  8. It's nothing but a really mediocre and lifeless rip-off of the season 3 episode "As Seen on TV".
  9. Overall, this episode ended SpongeBob SquarePants episodes airing in the 2000s decade and 2009 on an average, if not a pretty sour note for some SpongeBob SquarePants fans.

Model Qualities

  1. The drinkable sausage bit, the entirety of the New Sponge commercial (depending on your view), the dream sequence (depending on your view), "This is a job for a sponge! Fresh! Natural!", are clever and funny jokes in this episode.
  2. Hans the Hand returns for a cameo appearance outside of the theme song for the first time since the episode, Clams.
  3. The premise of SpongeBob becoming a commercial actor would've been an interesting concept, but was executed pretty poorly.
  4. While SpongeBob is dumb in this episode, he is at least pretty tolerable here.
    • Can be same as Patrick, as he's also tolerable.

Reception

  • The episode got mostly mixed to negative reviews from media critics, audiences, and fans of the show.
  • Plus, it was ranked #17 during the SpongeBob's Top 100 event in the UK and Ireland from June 4-8, 2012.

Trivia

  • This is also the last episode to premiere in 2009 as well as the 2000s decade.
