Monica and Friends in: Frame by Frame (Portuguese: Turma da Mônica em: Quadro a Quadro) is a Brazilian direct-to-video episode compilation of Turma da Mônica from 1996, produced by Maurício de Sousa Produções. The film was based on the comic series Monica and Friends (Turma da Mônica), and distributed by the Brazilian toy company Estrela.

Why This Film Deserves To Have No Frames

  1. The animation of these episodes is very limited, even by the 90s standards, with the characters having little or no animation, with very hard movements, looking either like something from a 60's cartoon or an old N64 video game cutscene.
    • According to the credits, the segments, excluding "Hungry White and the Seven Dwarfs", were animated by only one person.
    • Despite being animated by multiple people, "Hungry White and the Seven Dwarfs" still has horrible animation.
  2. The episode "You're Not Dead... Or Are You?" arguably has the worst animation in the whole series. It's not only because it looks dull and ugly, but at the end (after Smudge enters the house), the animation turns suddenly into the original comic panels before suddenly switching back.
    • Speaking of the same episode, when Smudge starts pretend shooting at objects, the animation suddenly changes to low quality CGI with Smudge shooting at objects in first person.
  3. The episodes have terrible CGI experiments:
    • The idea of putting 2D characters on 3D backgrounds, while a unique idea, did not age well due to the technology being there yet.
    • The idea of transitions taking the form of a comic book, despite being a decent idea, are badly done here.
  4. The writing of these episodes is very weak, like the episode "Something Green, Soft and Sticky" for example, which is about Monica accidentally sitting on something disgusting and (for some reason) she doesn't have the courage to get up to see what it is.
  5. The title card of the episode "You're Not Dead... Or Are You?" says that Jimmy Five is the main, when in reality, the episode is about Smudge.
  6. The episode "Hungry White and the Seven Dwarfs" is a horrible parody of Snow White.
    • This episode had a scene of Maggy spinning her head, referencing "The Exorcist". Considering that this is a kids movie, this is horrifying.
  7. Still speaking about the animation, the lip-sync often doesn't "sync" with what the characters saying.
  8. These episodes were so bad to the point that they were never released again, not even for the official Monica and Friends YouTube channel nor the DVD redubs released by Paramount Home Entertainment (save for a clip posted on the old Monica and Friends website in the early 2000s).

Qualities That Can Be Frames

  1. "The Game of Life" was an okay episode, making it the "best" episode in this collection.
  2. For the most part, characters were not flanderized.
  3. Going back to WTFDTHNF#2, the animation of the episode "You're Not Dead... Or Are You?" can be considered to be so bad, that it's good.
