"Must Love Dogs" is the 3rd episode of the 20th season of Family Guy.

Plot

When Quagmire meets and falls for a dog lover, he decides to pretend Brian is his own dog in order to try to woo her. At the same time, Chris helps Stewie find out who stole his Halloween candy.

Why It's a Must Hate Episode

  1. It only exists to revitalize the feud between Brian and Quagmire from Season 8, which many thought had been put to rest since Season 18.
    • Because new age Family Guy's continuity is inconsistent and often contradicts itself, the writers had to bring it back for either no apparent reason or whatever reason the writers had to bring back the Brian and Quagmire feud, it nevertheless shows that the writers are refusing to listen to the criticism aimed towards the show for how annoying the Brian and Quagmire feud is, as many fans wanted it to end. The fact that the writers brought it back after it was absent for an entire season makes the decision look very insulting toward Family Guy fans.
  2. The episode goes the same way as any modern Family Guy episode involving Quagmire: He meets a woman, and they fall into a relationship which is quickly broken at the end of the episode.
  3. Most of the characters are unlikeable in this episode.
    • Brian is unlikable as he talks rudely to Quagmire often and says he is only helping him so he can watch their relationship burn.
    • Quagmire is also unlikable for also constantly fighting with Brian throughout the entire episode and sending Seamus to read a screenplay of Ocean's Eleven to him at the end of the episode.
    • Peter and Chris are also unlikeable for stealing candy from Stewie in the subplot.
      • Not to mention, Chris betrayed Stewie for helping him hide the candy.
  4. Most of the humor is just about things that dogs like, which gets old and boring quickly.
  5. Instead of an actual ending, the episode ends with a random scene involving Wild West talking about getting a colonoscopy, which has no connection to the episode's plot.
  6. The episode chooses to portray Quagmire as the one in the right and Brian as the one completely in the wrong because Brian was the one who tore apart Quagmire and Carrie’s relationship even though Quagmire made Brian pretend to be his dog and should share some fault in this. The writers are also hypocritical as they gave Brian a lame punishment for ruining his rival’s relationship, but Quagmire also ruined a relationship Brian had with Ida in “Bri-Da” and Quagmire did not receive a punishment for this at all. This lack of karma towards Quagmire just makes him look morally superior over Brian even though he has done far worse.
    • Brian is not really innocent in this episode either because despite having a lame punishment, he still doesn't receive any adequate punishment for making Quagmire's life worse with Carrie's dogs as well as ruining his and Carrie's relationship. In other words, both Brian and Quagmire are equally in the wrong.

Must Love Qualities

  1. There are some funny scenes, like Brian trying to bark and instead saying, "BRAK", Stewie dressed as the "Oh my god!" GIF guy, and Lois dressed up as Marge Simpson from The Simpsons, which is a nice reference that is not a diss of The Simpsons.
  2. Stewie, Meg, Lois, Seamus, Cleveland, Donna, Joe, and Ida are likable characters, and Lois isn't flanderized like she usually is.
  3. The subplot idea is interesting since there has not been a Halloween-themed episode since Season 9, even though it did not get much time to be developed.
  4. This episode has Quagmire outright admit that he hates dogs because he's a cat person, which was something many fans have speculated as to why Quagmire hates Brian with a fiery passion.

Reception

Although the episode has a rating of 7.2/10 on IMDb, viewers criticized it for bringing back the Brian and Quagmire feud which was absent since Season 18.
