My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Rainbow Rocks is a Canadian-American flash animated movie based on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. It is the second installment in the franchise and the last to have a theatrical release.

Plot

The Rainbooms, a musical group featuring Rainbow Dash (Ashleigh Ball), Applejack, Pinkie Pie (Andrea Libman), Rarity and Fluttershy, and the newcomer Sunset Shimmer, battle their rivals, The Dazzlings, in a school competition, with the help of Princess Twilight Sparkle.

Why It Shines Like Rainbows

  1. The film introduces The Dazzlings, known as Adagio Dazzle, who is the leader type, Aria Blaze, the serious type, and Sonata Dusk, the comic relief type (who loves tacos) which are the three awesome singer villians in this film.
  2. The musical score by the same guy, Will Anderson, is still pretty good and awesome.
  3. The animation is still nice to look at, thanks to Adobe Flash, which was the same program for the show.
  4. The Rainbooms song numbers were pretty awesome and can be catchy, like "Awesome As I Wanna Be".
  5. The Dazzlings song numbers are pretty good too, such as "Under Our Spell" and the "Battle" song.
  6. There are very funny moments like when human Maud Pie feeds her pet rock crackers while scaring Sunset Shimmer as she enters the kitchen.
  7. All of the the main cast and the other characters are still likeable, just like the previous film.
  8. All of their traits and personalites are still the same here in this film:
    • Twilight Sparkle is still the likable, natural born and intelligent leader of the Mane 6, who can be OCD at times.
    • Spike, in particular, is still the loyal and lovable assistant to Twilight.
    • Fluttershy is still the calm, but shy type of girl who takes care of animals, but can be easily frightened sometimes.
    • Applejack is still the down-to-earth type of girl who is well adjusted but can sometimes be stubborn.
    • Rainbow Dash is still the well meaning, but speedy and sometimes irresponsible type of girl.
    • Pinkie Pie is still the hyper, wacky, but joyful and happy comic relief type of girl who always throws parties.
    • Rarity is still the artful, creative and generous type of girl, despite her vain and melodramatic tendencies sometimes.
    • Sunset Shimmer is very well portrayed in this film as it goes out of its way to make Sunset feel sincere about changing her ways, and they made her attempt to be forgiven have actual work to it instead of being easily forgiven. They also make her very sympathetic with how she tries to change, but yet everyone treats her like she's still the same mean bully she used to be.
  9. Awesome voice acting, thanks to the voice actors reprising their roles from the TV series and the first film. Especially Rebecca Shoichet as Sunset Shimmer in both her speaking and singing voice.
  10. The final fight sequence is really awesome, as it really feels like a battle between the two rival bands, almost like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
  11. Like the first film, it was really well written story with the bands of human life.
  12. All of the shorts that came with this film are pretty good, like "Case for the Base", which introduces the Flim Flam Brothers in human form.
  13. On that topic, the musical shorts are also pretty great too, like "My Past is Not Today", which has Sunset singing about her mistakes in the previous film and steps up to change her ways.
  14. WELCOME TO THE SHOW!

Bad Qualities

  1. Flash Sentry is now pretty unlikable, as he constantly berates Twilight (to be fair, he was being mesmerized by the Sirens).
  2. The Canterlot High School student body is no better, they constantly ostracize Sunset over what happened at the Fall Formal (even though it's justified), and they boo at The Rainbooms when they make it to the finals instead of Trixie and the Illusions.
  3. When the Dazzlings spell is broken, Flash Sentry and the Canterlot High School student body never even apologize to Sunset or The Rainbooms, or get punished for their actions, making them Karma Houdinis, (even though they were brainwashed by the Dazzlings to begin with).
  4. Again, since it uses Flash, animation errors are still pretty common.
  5. There are still some pop culture references like the first film (though normal), including Vinyl's car transforming into a speaker like Transformers and Rainbow Dash doing the Hadouken from Street Fighter.
  6. Rainbow Dash's portrayal in this film is like her personality has been shifted back to the first season of Friendship is Magic, before all of her character development (This is possibly due to her being portrayed as a teenage girl).
  7. The main plot of the movie is basically a rehash of the typical formula involving the bandmates and their leader quarreling about their contributions to the band, and they end up making amends, since the rock band theme is the main theme of the movie, which was used in episodes of TV shows such as "Battle of the Bands" from The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, "A Barn Day's Night from Back at the Barnyard, and "House Music" from The Loud House. As a result, it becomes predictable.

Reception

The film receives positive reviews from critics and fans alike. It hold a 6.9/10 on IMDB.
