Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island (also known as SpongeBob and Friends: Battle for Volcano Island in Europe), is the sequel to the 2005 video game Nicktoons Unite! Players assume the role of up to six playable characters from the Nickelodeon television series SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius, and Danny Phantom. The plot involves Danny Phantom, SpongeBob SquarePants, Timmy Turner (with Cosmo and Wanda), Patrick Star, Sam Manson, and Sandy Cheeks to protect the Volcano Island from an all-new villain named The Mawgu. It was released for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS.

Plot

In an island world called Volcano Island, a trio of crabs, led by the Wise Old Crab and his two assistants are gathering around a ritual at Summoner's Rock to summon 'The Nine' heroes to defeat their ancient enemy, the Mawgu.

Good Qualities

  1. The graphics, like in Nicktoons Unite!, are decent, especially for the time since the characters models such as SpongeBob and Danny Phantom are detailled and accurate to their show conterpart, despite that it did not aged well.
  2. The game is a bit of an improvement over Unite!, since the gameplay is a bit more polished and is also a bit more fast paced, or even the graphics themself that are a bit of a step up too, despite looking similar.
  3. The controls are really tight and responsive, and are very smooth since the characters will never ever be unresponsive and there are not any clunky part in the game, not to mention that they are very easy to learn too since the game in general is very simple.
  4. Great soundtrack that is very catchy and also give a good atmosphere, much like Nicktoons Unite! (even though that game had an even better soundtrack than this game).
  5. As usual with a Nickelodeon game, the voice acting is excellent and had all of the actors from the series that reprised their roles here, even for the French dub that is as decent as the French dub of Nicktoons Unite!.
  6. The box art is amazing for both the NA and PAL versions, especially the PAL version that had most of the characters that are present in the game for a playable character.
    • This is especially because it is full of details and it's also show who are the playable characters, although the PAL version had misleading box art due to featuring some unplayable characters in the cover art like they do a major role in the game.
  7. Really well animated cutscenes that are really funny, as usual with the Nickelodeon games, howewer they we're a little better in Unite!.
  8. Fun gameplay that while simple, is really good and is easy to play and to understand, this also could make a good start for playing video game when you're a kid since this game isn't really hard and is instead simple but fun, howewer due to this the gameplay can be repetitive.
  9. While too easy, the difficulty is well balanced and is very beginner friendly even when compared to Unite!, the difficulty is howewer more challenging for the other versions.
  10. The combat is really good despite being very basic, and is also satistying to do due to the impact that you cause when attacking an enemy.
  11. Really good story that is really epic and had lot of development, it is also better than in Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots.
  12. The roster of playable characters is pretty decent and even an improvement over Unite! since there's a bit more characters, but howewer they sadly removed Jimmy Neutron as a playable character, and Timmy didn't have a major role in this game either.
  13. Great level design, with lot of fun levels and some that had unique ideas, the enemies placements are also decent.

Game Boy Advance version

  1. It is a massive improvement over the awful GBA port of Nicktoons Unite! since there's a lot of things that was improved to make it a good game, which will be explained in the next pointers.
  2. Tight and responsive controls that are way better than the clunky controls of Nicktoons Unite!, since they will never be unresponsive and work really well.
  3. There are no longer the system of having to get to a specific place to change a character like in Nicktoons Unite! for the GBA, which make the game much better and less annoying.
  4. The graphics are great, with great sprites work, being greatly detailled and of course being colorful along with nice looking backgrounds, also an improvement over Unite! since in that game, the graphics we're horrible with the sprites being terrible and looked creepy too.
  5. Speaking of the sprites, they are the best from a GBA Nicktoons game, since they look cute and well made.
  6. The level design is really great and had many unique levels and also lot of interesting ideas that we're not in another Nicktoons game.
  7. Amazing soundtrack that fit the theme of the game really well and is even more epic than the console versions, it is also really catchy as well.
  8. Fun gameplay that is a huge improvement over Unite! on GBA since the platforming is fun and much better, and the puzzles are fun to figure out, speaking of it...
  9. The puzzles are really interesting and are some of the best from a Nickelodeon game.

Nintendo DS version

  1. Decent and responsive controls that are an improvement over Unite! on DS, since now the controls are more responsive, howewer it isn't really comparable since this is a 2D platformer, not a 3D one.
  2. Really good graphics with lot of details and they also are very colorful, they also are a big improvement over Unite! due to being more responsive and tighter despite still being a bit clunky at times.
  3. Great soundtrack that is even better than the console versions, since the musics are really catchy to listen to and would make you want to listen to them for a long time or sometime even want to dance with the music, although some songs are bland.
  4. This port is more challenging than the other versions of the game, even more than the GBA version, but howewer the game can still be very frustrating and unbalanced at times.
  5. The gameplay, like the other versions, is fun since it is a 2D platformer with some puzzles elements that are hard to figure out but still aren't as frustrating as SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom on the GBA since here they are still more fun (despite BFBB on GBA being a decent game) and easier to figure out.
  6. Great level design with lot of levels that are fun to play and is adapted to the gameplay of the game, which also make it easy to play.

Bad Qualities

  1. The game is very short, since you can beat it in only 2 hours with almost no difficulty, you can even beat it the first time you play it.
  2. The game is also way too easy, even more than Unite!, since there's almost no penality when dying, and most of the enemies are easy to kill, this is mostly the reason why you can beat the game in only the first time you play it.
  3. Unfortunately some characters from Unite! does not appear as playable characters here, notably Jimmy Neutron, fortunately he did come back in the sequel.
  4. The gameplay is a bit repetitive.

Game Boy Advance version

  1. Some of the levels are quite tedious, since some of them had really frustrating puzzles to figure out, or some levels that had poor enemies placements, though not as horrible as Unite! on GBA.
  2. Way too short, the game is even shorter than the console versions and you can beat it in only 1h30m or even less if you're an expert.

Nintendo DS version

  1. The game is even shorter than the other versions, even more than the GBA version, since you can beat it in only 1 hour or even less, this is mostly because the levels are really short.
  2. Despite being decent, it is the weakest version of the game due to some of the levels being tedious.
  3. The controls for some characters aren't as good as the GBA version, since some of them are a bit clunky to control.

Reception

Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island received mixed reviews by critics but positive reviews by players. The game had a score of 59/100 for both the PS2 and DS versions and a score of 69/100 for the GBA version on Metacritic

Later, the game along with Unite! and the sequels of BFVI, the game got a cult following over the years with it often being revisited and is considered a Nickelodeon classic by gamers, although not as much as Unite!

Trivia

  • The GBA version was developed by Halfbrick, who would later develop Fruit Ninja on mobile phones.
