Nights: Journey of Dreams (stylized as NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams) is an action game developed by Sonic Team in conjunction with Sega Studio USA and published by Sega for the Wii in 2007. It is the sequel to Nights into Dreams
Background
The original game Nights into Dreams was one of the most successful and popular games on the Sega Saturn, it even helped improve the poor sales of the console to some degree. Demand for a sequel was very high and Sega planned to make more Nights into Dreams video games to support the struggling Sega Saturn and later Sega Dreamcast, however creator Yuji Naka continuously refused to make a sequel and even threatened to quit more than once. It is speculated that Yuji Naka was angry because Sega tried to use the Nights game engine as a working ground for Sonic X-Treme.
It should also be noted that Yuji Naka wasn't the owner of the Nights into Dreams IP so he technically had no right to decide if a sequel should be made or not. Eventually, Yuji Naka quit Sega during the development of Sonic '06, after he left the company Sonic Team was finally able to make a proper Nights game.
Why It's Still A Dream
- Players can choose from four different control schemes; the Wii Remote alone, Wii Remote and Nunchuk, Classic Controller, and the Nintendo GameCube controller.
- Fast-paced flying action.
- Fun gameplay that's easy to learn but difficult to master.
- Nights can now shape-shift into several forms, which allows Nights to travel through new paths using their attributes:
- Dolphin Nights allows Nights to travel underwater
- Rocket Nights allow Nights to blast off to high speeds
- Dragon Nights increases Nights' resistance to wind
- Wonderful soundtrack.
- Clever boss fights.
- There are several platforming stages with Will and Helen that make creative use of the stage's gimmicks.
- Players can compete with others via a Battle Mode or Race Mode.
- Back when the Forecast Channel was still active, the weather in the player's city would be the weather in-game. For example, if it was raining in the player's city, it would be raining in-game. This feature no longer works on a normal Wii, due to the discontinuation of the Forecast Channel, but it can be restored with RiiConnect24.
Bad Qualities
- The "My Dream" mode lacks interactivity or a good way to tell if the Nightopians are being raised or not.
- The voice-acting is hit-or-miss.
- The in-game graphics are barely above an average Dreamcast game.
- Repetitive mission structure for every chapter.
