Om Nom Stories is an animated Russian web series created by ZeptoLab and RocketFox based on the Cut the Rope games. The series revolves around Om Nom, and his adventures outside of the game and also introduces new characters each season.
Although seasons 1-7 were well received by fans, the series began declining in quality in Season 8.
Why It Doesn't Deserve A Candy Anymore
In General
- The biggest problem with these seasons is that they don't feel like Cut the Rope, as they are completly unfaithful to their source material, and they lack the charm & cleverness seasons 1-7 had. These seasons would often break many rules and add in new ones constantly (the Super-Noms seasons for example introduces a mouse, an evil snowman, a thing that eats trash to get bigger, and more). They also would often either sideline or portray Om Nom as a butt-monkey in order to give other characters the spotlight (The Super-Noms seasons are basically Om Nelle seasons and the Nibble-Nom seasons are...well Nibble-Nom seasons). The biggest nail in the coffin is that the candy, a core aspect of Cut the Rope and the show is completely gone in these seasons, all of this removes all the charm seasons 1-7 had.
- ZeptoLab hasn't made a lot of traditional Cut the Rope games ever since these seasons came out, which has left a bunch of fans disappointed, heck, not even Rovio (creators of Angry Birds) have neglected the original game formula as much as ZeptoLab.
- Some of the characters have suffered flanderization:
- Om Nom in these seasons has been flanderized from a likable, smart and curious green blob-like monster into being a complete doofus who is the physical embodiment of a butt-monkey.
- Om Nelle in these seasons has been flanderized into being from a decent, fairly cleverly written character to Om Nom's caretaker of sorts and a Mary Sue as she is portrayed as completely perfect and capable at everything.
- Since the charm from the older seasons has been removed, it results in very dull writing with a lot of the episodes being boring.
- Tons of cringeworthy thumbnails that feel somewhat like clickbait.
- Quantity over quality: Ever since these seasons began, the series has been having 2-3 seasons per year, thus causing the series to jump the shark even further.
- Plenty of bad episodes such asː
- "Tea Party" (arguably the worst episode)
- "Super Noms" (which started these seasons on a sour note)
- "Nibble-Nom" (which started season 15 on a rather pointless note)
- "Sand Castles"
- "Book Worm"
- "Snow Castles"
- "Hocus Pocus"
- "Playground Fun"
- "Magic Fails"
- "Bedtime Play"
- "The Magic Microphone"
- "Draw The World"
- "Wonder Mixer"
- "Squeaky Clean"
- "Sweet Nom"
- "Nom Pranks"
- "No Tears"
- "Om Nom Game"
- "Heart Shaped"
- "Appearance Matters"
The Super-Noms seasons (8-14)
- The biggest problem with these seasons is that they go out of their way to flanderize Om Nom into being an incompetent, helpless butt-monkey, who basically can't do anything without Om Nelle's help, in order to make Om Nelle look like a better person. There are even episodes where Om Nelle has to save Om Nom from a villain, they are basically Om Nelle seasons.
- Om Nom has been flanderized into a butt-monkey who, as we said before twice gets constantly wrapped up in situations, and is often portrayed as incompetent.
- Om Nelle got flanderized to a perfect, capable at everything green monster and solves a large majority of the conflicts, and often has to save or help Om Nom from villains, she also gets far too much screen time and is a main character now even though she was far better as a side character/Om Nom Nom's love interest.
- The theme song in seasons 13 & 14 is unbearably cringy, with awful lyrics and singing.
- The action scenes are average, typical and very boring and slow.
The Nibble-Nom seasons (15-17)
- These seasons are basically extreme Om Nom torture, as they constantly abuse and torture him in nearly every episode, and further flanderizes him into an even more apparent butt-monkey.
- Nibble-Nom is an awful and pointless addition. He's also done some pretty bad things:
- He forcibly had Om Nom to join his tea party even though he doesn't want to (Tea Party).
- He started a fantasy over Om Nelle trying to put a hat on him (Sand Castles).
- He whines a lot (Various).
- He will often drag Om Nom into his fantasies without any permission whatsoever (Various).
- His fantasies often put Om Nom in extreme pain and torture.
- He is pretty annoying at times.
- He just puts his own parents through absolute hell in general.
- Om Nom has gotten worse and is now a dumb dad who is basically the second child Om Nelle has to parent.
- These seasons' main gimmick gets fairly repetitive.
- Like how the Super-Noms seasons are basically Om Nelle seasons the Nibble-Nom seasons are really about the character with the same name, as the series no longer feels like an Om Nom series anymore.
- These seasons constantly rehash the same three plots over and over again, leading to the season becoming extremely repetitive and boringː
- Om Nom is tortured and abused by Nibble-Nom.
- Om Nom gets turned into a random vehicle and gets thrown into the background while Nibble-Nom gets to do the cool stuff.
- Nibble-Nom randomly activates a fantasy and Om Nom just goes along with it.
The Om Nom Cafe seasons (18-19)
- Om Nom in these seasons has been completely flanderized into being both a butt monkey and a dumb idiot.
- Some of the episodes don't even involve cooking.
- Bad theme song as usual.
- A lot of the episode concepts either revolve around Om Nom being unlikable, like with "Squeaky Clean" for example, where Om Nom doesn't want to get his hands dirty even when he is about to die, or in "Wonder Mixer", where he uses the mixer on literally everything, or are fairly uncreative and boring, such as "Wash Upǃ", a primary example.
- Older characters are gone from these seasons.
The New Neighbors seasons (20-present)
- At this point, the series has completely lost its identity. The candy is still gone from these seasons, but now older characters from seasons 1-7, and even the ones from seasons 8-19 are completely gone from these seasons, like a certain other series that went through seasonal rot. These seasons overall represent everything the series has become, a bad web cartoon made for children with poor comedy, flanderization of characters, and new characters that are very bland and uninteresting.
- Speaking of the new characters, none of them are really memorable, all of them are just one-dimensional stereotypes. They feel like a massive downgrade from the older characters.
- The theme song is still bad.
- Almost none of the episodes in these seasons have plots. As most of them feel like loosely connected shorts and gags thrown together in three minutes. Please, tell us what's the plot of "No Tears"?
- A lot and we mean A LOT of clickbaity thumbnails that give the wrong impression of the episode's plot (a few examples like, "Appearance Matters" or "Wake Up").
- Some of the episodes are uninspired rehashes of old ones, such as Nom Pranks being an rehash of the Season 6 episode Pranks.
Redeeming Qualities That Can Get A Candy
- Older characters do return in the Super Nom seasons.
- The animation is still great as usual.
- Nibble-Nom has a pretty cute design.
- Nibble-Nom did at least get a lot better in seasons 18-21.
- Some of the gags are funny.
- To be fair, seasons 9 & 16 while still not good, are the least bad of these seasons.
- There are episodes in Super-Noms where Om Nom is the one to solve the conflicts (With Om Nelle's help admittedly, but still).
- The intro for the Super-Nom seasons 8-12 is pretty cool.
- There are still queit a few fans who enjoy these seasons
- There are still some decent episodes likeː
- "Sushi"
- "Evil Snowman"
- "Detective Nom"
- "Platformer" (Which ended season 16 on a high note)
- "Happy Day"
- "Happy Birthday!"
Reception
NOTEː The Cut the Rope fandom is fairly inactive, so we're using all the reception we can find here.
Seasons 8 onwards has got mixed to negative reception from fans, due to flanderization of the characters, the series becoming unrecognizable from its source material, and dull and boring comedy. Despite that, their are still some fans who enjoy these seasons.
