Pac-Man: Adventures in Time is a maze game for PC developed by Mind's Eye Productions and Creative Asylum and published by Hasbro Interactive in 2000.

Plot

One night, the ghosts steal a powerful Artifact that has protected the world from evil for thousands of years and bring it to The Mollusc, who shatters the Artifact and scatters its four pieces across time. Professor Pac alerts Pac-Man of the situation and builds a time machine in order to restore the Artifact to normal.

Why It Rocks

  1. The entire game was created without Namco's control, and yet still is faithful to the original arcade game with a Pac-Man World feel, thanks to Hasbro.
  2. The intro and ending cutscenes look quite good for the time, with phenomenal 3D animation for 2000s standards and the color palette, despite being dark, look very good in these cutscenes.
  3. Apart from the intro and ending cutscenes, the other cutscenes between the levels are decent and quite funny, although the animation is not as good as in the intro and ending cutscenes.
  4. Addicting gameplay that retains what made the original arcade game great while adding new features and layouts to make the game stand out.
  5. A catchy soundtrack.
  6. The graphics were good for their times on PC with great characters model, a great colors palette, and being full of details for 2000s standards.
  7. Returning from Pac-Mania, Pac-Man can jump over enemies and obstacles, making the game a bit easier since the game is quite hard.
  8. A variety of new obstacles that require strategy to overcome. Such examples include slides, minecarts, tunnels, rivers, boulders, all sorts.
  9. Decent multiplayer mode that is very similar to the one featured in Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness.
  10. Fun minigames that keep the feel of the main game well, as despite being simple, they are still very fun, this is the definition of simple but fun.
  11. Decent plot that is quite dark due to the antagonist and the dark nature of the game and the graphics (which look great despite not being so colorful)

Bad Qualities

  1. Like Pac-Man World 1 and 3, your lives are not replenished after a Game Over if you have fewer than the default number.
  2. Some of the vertical mazes can be frustrating to deal with.
  3. The bonus cutscenes are boring and only feel like loading time filler, not to mention that it's had terrible animation that is very bland and dull in comparison of the cutscenes of the game, especially the intro and ending.
  4. The multiplayer, while fun, is lackluster compared to other Pac-Man games, especially compared to Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness.
  5. The Mollusc, while scary, is an underwhelming antagonist, as he only shows up in the opening and ending and just gets vaporized in the final cutscene with no boss fight.
    • Although this might be justified since there was no boss fights in the game but it still sad because it's could have been a huge potential to have a boss fight with him, and it could be the most epic boss fight of the franchise is that would have happened.

Reception

Pac-Man: Adventures in Time received mostly positive reviews. It currently has a 79/100 on Metacritic.
