"Planet of the Jellyfish" is an episode from Season 8 of SpongeBob SquarePants. In this episode, an evil jellyfish kidnaps Bikini Bottomites and clones them.
Why It Holds The Mayo
- Mayonnaise out of the kitchen: It is an excellent and faithful parody of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
- Lots of funny moments, including:
- The fact that mayo saves the day.
- The Jellien's shriek
- "One Krabby Patty, hold the mayonnaise"
- Sandy saves the day, again.
- The animation and visuals are great for Season 8, especially as that season is notable for its dull and stiff animation.
- The story is coherent and great.
- Although it is scary, it helps make the episode's great atmosphere and rewatchability.
- The funny but suspenseful cliffhanger ending where Patrick asks to "hold the mayo", leaving SpongeBob and Squidward suspicious.
Snatched Qualities
- Misleading title: There is no planet, nor a reference to Planet of the Apes outside of the title.
- The episode seldom airs and may be forgettable due to it being paired with the episode, Are You Happy Now?, which was banned for its suicide-centered plot, for good reasons.
Reception
"Planet of the Jellyfish" received positive reviews. However, on IMDb, it has a 6.4 rating out of 10 due to its controversial sister episode, where most reviewers were favorable on this segment in particular. With an 8.7 out of 10 on SpongeBuddy Mania, it is also considered one of the best episodes of Season 8, on par with "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!".
Trivia
- The episode is a parody of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, while its title references Planet of the Apes.
