Power Rangers Cosmic Fury(also known as Power Rangers Dino Fury Season 3) is a live-action show created by Haim Saban, serving as a hybrid adaptation of both Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger and Uchu Sentai Kyuranger and was created for Netflix in September 29, 2023. Its serves as the sequel to Power Rangers Dino Fury, is the third/final season of the Power Rangers Fury series, the fifth installment in the Hasbro-Era of the Power Rangers series and is overall the 30th installment of the Power Rangers series.
Plot
The emperor of evil, Lord Zedd has returned more powerful than ever. However, a team of heroes stands in his way - the Cosmic Fury Power Rangers.
Why It's Not Lucky
- One of the main criticisms are Hasbro's decision to not utilize the Uchu Sentai Kyuranger suits, with the Cosmic Fury suits also receiving negative feedback as well, although they may not be considered as problematic as those in the ToQger series, instead, it's using the Uchu Sentai Kyuranger's mecha as a stock footage.
- Another main problem is that the Power Rangers' suits themselves, while very neat looking and are a good homage to the Mighty Morphin suits, are boring in terms of design, mainly in the chest area were it looks SUPER plain when compere to the previous suits from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers all the way to Power Rangers Dino Fury.
- Very, very, very, very, very, VERY confusing introduction to the series: The entire show (as in the first episode) beginnings with both the Dino Fury Rangers and the Morphin Masters fighting wave of monsters while later on Billy from Mighty Morphin and Mick from Ninja Steel appearing and joining the fight, and unlike Beast Machines: Transformers which also had the problem of starting off with a very confusing introduction, this never gets explained.
- The choice of the title "Zenith" for Zayto's new suit, along with its champagne-color, has stirred some controversy among fans of the Dino Fury series. Some argue that the title doesn't quite capture the essence of the character or the suit's design, while others find fault with the color itself.
- Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is also very short, only lasting for 10 episodes in only 1 season, instead of the usual duration of 20-to-22 episodes and two seasons like Power Rangers Dino Fury, which had 44 episodes and 22 episodes in 2 seasons.
- Initially, Netflix did showed interest in producing a 20-episode season for Cosmic Fury. Nevertheless, Hasbro executives ultimately made the decision to limit the series to only 10 episodes without any reason given.
- Because of how short Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is due to Hasbro's decision, this makes some episodes VERY rushed and unfinished (more on that later).
- The "final battle" of Cosmic Fury is extremely anti-climactic: The Cosmic Fury Rangers all defeat Master Zedd by... having him give up his powers and releasing the Morphin Masters that he captured after Zayto offers a deal with Zedd to release the Morphin Masters in exchange for release from the captivator, then transporting Lord Zedd to the Dream World were he is forced to serve Rita. This is perhaps one of the singe laziest ways to have a villain be defeated, and because Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is so-far the final season (and so-far the last season to be FILMED in New Zealand) to be set in the original continuity established by Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 1993, this show completely ended with an extremely sour note as The final battle didn't quite meet expectations and the "defeat" of Lord Zedd seemed to come out-of-nowhere and wasn't well-established.
- And to rub some salt of the wound, this season of the original Power Rangers franchise is so-far the very last season, in a sour note.
- Even though Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is the "final installment" in the original Power Rangers continuity since Mighty Morphin, this season left this franchise open-ended, this is partly due to Hasbro's challenging business practices.
- Make things matter worse, Hasbro gives up the franchise by Hasbro giving away a lots that span the entire history of the franchise at the Heritage Auctions.[1]
- Unfortunately, This Hasbro reboot was now in development hell due to Netflix exiting the agreement, causing the series would not be moving forward, with Hasbro attempting to find a new developer. There are also actual signs of the Netflix reboot being cancelled.
- Very few Monster-Of-The-Week Monsters, and even when there IS a Monster-Of-The-Week, they barely contribute to the plot and are quickly defeated by the Rangers, though this is due to the show only having 10 episodes.
- According to reports, Hasbro identified a flaw in the toy design of the "Zenith" suit. This flaw prompted adjustments to the original suit design drafts, as confirmed by Bennett, a spokesperson for the production team. Simon Bennett mentioned that earlier drafts featured intricate details and textures, which were later simplified at the request of Hasbro to facilitate easier replication in toy form. Despite these alterations, only a few toys based on the Dino Fury series have been released, notably the DX Cosmic Morpher, Zenith Ranger Playset, and the Cosmic Fury Zord pack. However, there has been confirmation from Hasbro of a hiatus in toy production for the foreseeable future, leaving fans uncertain about the availability of additional merchandise related to the series.
- There are SO MANY plot-holes in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury that are never ever, ever explained, most of which are due to this season's shorter length in episodes:
- How did the Dino Fury Rangers know the exact location of were Lord Zedd is?
- Who is Bajillia Naire? And why is she here to add Lord Zedd?
- Where did both Billy and Mick come from, how did they get there and also how do they know both the location of were the Dino Fury Rangers are and know about Lord Zedd returning?
- Why is Scrozzle working for Bajillia?
- How the heck does Fern know Izzy's identity as the Green Dino Fury Ranger, as well as know the Dino Fury Rangers' identity as a whole?
- When and where did Squillia meet Heckyl?
- On that note, how did Heckyl get here and why didn't he call in his fellow Dino Charge Ranger allies for back-up?
- How is it that Bajillia can reform herself after being blasted to bits, and yet her daughter Squillia can not?
- Why couldn't Tarrick build new robot allies as to add the Cosmic Fury Rangers in their battle agents Lord Zedd like when he created Boomtower, Slyther and Wreckmate back in Power Rangers Dino Fury when he was still Void Knight?
- On that note, seeing as Slyther was able to reform and add the Cosmic Fury Rangers, why didn't Tarrrick rebuild Boomtower and Wreckmate and have them reformed to add the Cosmic Fury Rangers in the first place?
- Where did Heckyl disappear to after episode 7?
- Why didn't the Cosmic Fury Power Rangers think to combine their weapons and form the Cosmic Blaster or all of their Cosmic Fury Zords to form the Cosmic Fury Ultrazord in the first place?
- Mucus and Slyther are shown that they could teleport to any location at will, so instead of them being disgust, why didn't they do that when Mucus and Slyther were both inflationary Lord Zedd's Lair to destroy the Triceratops Statue and free Ollie, and later on teleport away when Lord Zedd caught them?
- How the heck does the Zentinels know how to use the Cosmic Blaster?
- Why didn't the Cosmic Fury Rangers teleport away after Bajillia reviles her plan?
- So much wasted potential:
- Billy and Mick makes an appearance in this show and serves as one of the main Ranger characters, with Billy serving as a mentor of some-kind to the Dino Fury Rangers, this gives it a potential that maybe Power Rangers from the previous Power Rangers seasons might join in on the Cosmic Fury Rangers' battle agents Lord Zedd and add them in their own uneck ways, but beside Heckyl who later on appears in the fifth and seventh episodes, that never happens.
- The idea that Lord Zedd's goal is to use the Morphing Masters' energy to power himself up to be this all powerful being seems like a neat idea, but it leaves so little in quality and it happens too late in the show.
- Ollie at no point in Cosmic Fury(besides that minor scene in the first episode) ever interacts with Billy, even after reforming after his Triceratops Statue was destroyed by Slyther and Mucus, despite these two sharing so much similarities.
- Biggest Wasted Potential: In the penultimate episode of Power Rangers Cosmic Fury when Lord Zedd becomes Master Zedd and becomes an all powerful being, the Rangers try everything in their power to stop him, but nothing work, not even the Cosmic Fury Zords were able to land a hit on him, being that Master Zedd could be one of the most powerful beings in the ENTIRE Power Rangers series, this episode gives it a potential of having an extremely epic and cinematic battle were the Cosmic Fury Rangers could have had call al-pone ALL of the Power Rangers from the previous season (from Mighty Morphin all the way to Beast Morphers) to join in on their ultimate final battle agents Master Zedd, and even bring in their Megazords and/or Ultrazords as to also battle Master Zedd when he grows giant, which this finale could have 100% easily done, but instead, Bajillia Naire comes out-of-nowhere and has Scrozzle capture Master Zedd, and it's reviled that SHE'S behind all of this, thus leading to one of the most anticlimactic endings in all of Power Rangers. Not only does this greatly ruin Lord Zedd as a villain and makes him look like an idiot(for the record, Lord Zedd may not be the brightest villain in the previous Power Rangers shows, he was never that stupid), but it also ruined what could have been one of the most cinematic battles in all of Power Rangers history just for the sake of a stupid twist!
- Characters from Dino Fury (Jane Fairview, J-Borg, Carlos Garcia, Lily, Ed Jones, Rina Garcia and etc) are pushed to the side in Cosmic Fury, as they have less prominence in this season then they did previously due to Cosmic Fury focusing mainly on the Rangers and co., as well as having less dialogue, do little-to-nothing to the series and some of which just randomly disappear and are never seen or even mention again, with specie mention going to Jane and J-Borg, both of which disappear from Cosmic Fury entirely after the seventh episode with no explanation of were they are and are both never seen or even mention again.
- The limited duration of the "Cosmic Fury" series resulted in the exclusion of several Voyagers from "Uchu Sentai Kyuranger." Notably, the Houou Voyager, Orion Voyager, Kojishi Voyager, and Cerberus Voyager were among those that did not make an appearance in the series.
- In "Cosmic Fury", certain Ranger colors from "Kyuranger" lack direct counterparts. These colors encompass Hebitsukai Silver, Washi Pink, Kajiki Yellow, Ryu Commander, Koguma Skyblue, and Houou Soldier, It shows They only have 7 rangers with colors (Red, Blue, Gold, Green, Orange, Black, and Champagne-color)
- Power Rangers Cosmic Fury as a whole was very much rushed, since the show only has ten episodes, and the pacing is too quick since certain moments either last only a few seconds or the show tends to cut several corners for Power Rangers Cosmic Fury to go a little quicker, which makes this show feel way too short overall with only 10 episodes, resulting in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury feeling very cheap, its as if there wasn't enough time to add more things to make this show run just a little bit longer, making it feel like Power Rangers Cosmic Fury wasn't even finished and was only made just to modernize the Power Rangers franchise in general.
- Overall, due to the shorter length of the show and the very weak final battle, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury feels more like either a Spin-Off/Side Show or even a Parody show of a Power Rangers Season, rather then both a full on Season and a Sequel to a Power Rangers show.
Redeeming Qualities
- This was the first theme tune since Power Rangers RPM fifteen years ago where the word "go" is not utilized in its lyrics, and also the first since Power Rangers RPM to not be a retune of the original "Go Go Power Rangers".
- There were new concepts that broke the old trends of previous Power Rangers seasons:
- Introducing Amelia Jones, who was the Pink Ranger in the previous seasons as this series' Red Ranger, making her the first full-time female Red Ranger (after SPD's Charlie and Samurai's Lauren) and leader of the group.
- Introducing Fern as an Orange Ranger, making her and Izzy the first queer ranger couple in combat. There were rangers as a couple in prior seasons, and even queer rangers in Super Sentai.
- It was great to see those likable characters came back such as:
- David Yost playing as Billy Cranston (as he first appeared in Power Rangers Mini Movie, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always)
- Mick Kanic (Power Rangers (Super) Ninja Steel
- Even Zordon makes a surprise appearance in the final episode of Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, who hadn't made an appearance in Power Rangers since the series finale episode of Power Rangers in Space, "Countdown to Destruction".
- Despite the finale series in a sour note, the final episode's ending was very sweet, because Javi performs at a concert, singing a song which included Zordon's phrase.
- Javi's song: "May the Power Protect You" was very catchy and pretty good (despite the repetitive lyrics).
Reception
Power Rangers Cosmic Fury received very mixed-to-largely negative reviews by fans and critics alike, with many criticizing the show's poor handling of its Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger and Uchu Sentai Kyuranger elements, it's very short length, the overall rushed production and very unsatisfying ending.
