Power Rangers Wild Force is a video game based on the television series of the same name, developed by THQ for the Game Boy Advance in 2002.
Gameplay
The player plays as one of six Rangers. Back up Rangers can be summoned for additional attack power throughout each level. The player fights Putrids until encountering the final boss in each level. After defeating the boss, the boss grows to giant size, and the player selects a Megazord combination to fight the large monster, in a series of Quick time Events. The game is played across 12 levels. Passwords are provided at the end of each level, allowing the player to resume a specific level by entering the correct password. A Battle Mode allows for up to four players to compete against each other.
Bad Qualities
- The gameplay quickly became very boring since you do the same things over and over, running to a new section, beating up enemies and fighting the bosses, nothing more, they could at least add mini games and while there's still Megazord battles, they are the some of worst of a GBA Power Rangers game, only behind Time Force that had the absolute worst Megazord battles in any of the GBA games.
- Terrible graphics, they look so abysmal and are somehow even worse than Time Force poor graphics, since much like Yu Yu Hakusho: Spirit Detective, the graphics are in 3D models but they look really terrible and you also would never recognise the rangers, thanks to how bad they are.
- The colors are also over satured and look awful, and look somehow worse than in Time Force, which had good color palette, and because of this, the rangers had horrible colors sheme that doesn't look like them.
- Horrible sprites for nearly everyone, since they are in 3D but it doesn't work and look undetailled, the rangers all look the same and because of that, they are just the same sprites just with the color changed, even the Game Gear games had better sprites than this game, and it was a 8-bit game.
- The backgrounds also look absolutely horrible and are some of the worst seen in a GBA game from 2002, at least for some of the levels.
- To point this out, there's so many games on the GBA that did came out this year that look better than this, such as:
- Ice Age
- Bomberman Max 2
- Mega Man Zero
- Spider-Man: The Movie
- Frogger Advance: The Great Quest
- Poor controls, as they are very stiff and clunky, as well as being unresponsive, the jumping is the worst offender because it feel heavy, stiff, clunky and almost uncontrolable, they are arguably the worst seen in a GBA Power Rangers game.
- Terrible level design that mostly consist of extremely repetitive mazes and all of these, and if it was done so that it is a true maze, it failed because of the fact that you can still know where to go, even if most of the levels are hard to know where you must go, in fact there's barely any fun moments in these due to how bad they designed those levels.
- Horrible bosses, most of them are just hard for no reasons, and you will had a hard time to attack them due to how god awful their al is.
- Fumigator Org is already hard despite being a first boss, this is mostly because of the poor hit-detection but for some reasons, he isn't hard if the game would never got this awful hit-detection.
- Chainsow Org is pretty easy, you just had to use the R button to attack him, and he had no chances of killing you, not to mention that he doesn't even had distance attacks, which mean that he isn't as hard as the first boss of the game.
- Jindrax is somewhat annoying since she always run at you to catch you and do lot of damages, although if you know how to defeat her, it is a pretty easy fight howewer.
- Forklift Org is incredibly annoying, when you approach him, he directly attack you, thus making it hard to hit him and since the hit-detection is so poor, you may get a hard time and losing lot of lifes, he isn't as bad as the next boss, howewer.
- Screw Org is easily the worst boss of the entire game since he is horribly hard to the point of being impossible to not lose a life or even try to not getting hit by him, since his attacks are atrocious and they are very fast and can even follow you just to annoy you, in fact he is so bad that he is the hardest boss of not only this game for sure but also maybe even in the entire franchise, doesn't even the fact that the hit-detection is extremely poor in this game.
- Toxica isn't nearly as horrible as Screw Org but he is a bit annoying due to constantly attacking you with his fire and because of that, you may not getting a huge room for attscking.
- Master Org is a decent boss due to his attacks path being better than the other, although it is nothing special.
- The combat is pretty poor, despite being fun, all you do is just mashing the buttons and nothing else, there isn't any combos except the basic attacks, there's not any different moves from each rangers and you can't block attack, not to mention that it is incredibly repetitive and feel unfinished.
- Unbalanced difficulty, the game is mostly easy when fighting the regular enemies but the bosses as stated before are incredibly hard, and some of the levels are harder than other, in a similar vein to Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles, although not as bad as in that game.
- It is too short, lasting only 1 hour, not helping the fact that there isn't any replay values except if you want to Replay the game once again.
- For some weird reasons, the final boss had the same boss music of before, despite being the final boss, and while that music is good, that doesn't fit for a final fight before the end.
Good Qualities
- The special attacks of each characters are varied, and all of them had their own abilities, making it less repetitive.
- Awesome soundtrack that sound very catchy and is memorable, the same can be said for the sound effects that sound better than the previous game on the GBA.
- Despite not being a great game, it is an improvement over Time Force on the GBA.
- The box art look cool, and is a 2D animated cover art instead of a cover featuring the actors, which wasn't done before and the Power Rangers look great in an animated style.
- The game can be fun at times, especially during the enemies beating sections.
Reception
Although the PS1 version (albeit the Japanese only Super Santai games) received positive reviews. The GBA version received mixed reviews, the game had a score of 55/100 on Metacritic.
