SD the Great Battle is a top-down platforming shoot 'em up video game released for the Super Famicom on December 29, 1990. A crossover of the Ultra Series, Kamen Rider, and Gundam franchises, characters from these franchises are playable. The game is presented in a super deformed style. It is also part of the Compati Hero series.
Why It's Great
- The graphics look gorgeous for an early 1990 SNES game, and they're very detailed for the characters, and they're very colorful.
- The concept of a game with super-deformed characters from well-known series and anime is a funny but good concept, especially since this concept wasn't that well made until this game came out.
- Making a crossover with Ultraman, Gundam, and Kamen Rider is a great idea since these series are all awesome and some of the most well-known series in Japan.
- Tight controls.
- While the game isn't that fast, the gameplay is still decent and quite fun. If you need to play an action game that isn't too fast to play or simply has a short game to play, then this game is for you.
- It's also beginner-friendly since this game isn't that hard, especially at the beginning, and the enemies aren't so annoying.
- Great presentation, especially for 1990 standards on SNES, since it's using mode 7 in a very good way for the time the game was released. This is especially true when you beat a level, and in the map, it's going to another level in a stylish way for a 1990 game.
- The soundtrack is awesome for a 1990 SNES game, and the soundtrack is on par with Super Mario World. It's a great rendition of the theme for Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Gundam, and the last stage theme (which isn't a song of the character that you have chosen) is great and the only original song.
- It's spawned four sequels, some of which were as good, if not better, as the fourth game in the series.
- Also, most of them differ from their predecessors, such as 2 and 3, which became beat em up; the fourth game is an excellent action platformer; and the fight game is a game that is similar to Wild Gun on SNES.
- The humor can be very funny, such as in the dialogue and some bosses back stories when you fight them.
- Great cutscenes that explain the plot of the game.
- The special attacks are great, despite most of them being overpowered.
Bad Qualities
- When you select a specific character, their theme from their main series will play, which can come off as unfitting. For example, if you choose to play as Ultraman in the third level, then his theme will be unfitting for this level, and the Kamen Rider theme is much more fitting for this level.
- Howewer, this might be intentional since, in some stages, you are supposed to play a specific character.
- The game is a bit too short, as you can beat the game in only 40 minutes. However, this is understable since this game was released so early in the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom life, the sequels that this game spawned will fortunately be longer.
- Also, no password features on this games and thankfully, the sequel on this games will be adding the password.
- As said in WIG #4, the game is a bit slow to play, and it can be dull for some people.
- This is more of a problem if you only like fast action games; if you dislike slow games, then there is a chance that you will also dislike this game.
- Stage 6 is basically a labyrinth, and it's quite annoying to try to beat that level, especially if you want to explore a bit, and you can easily get lost.
- The platforming can be quite difficult, especially in stages 4 and 5.
- The special attacks are overpowered, especially Kamen Rider with his time-stopper ability; in fact, you can beat bosses with no problem with this.
Trivia
- An English version was planned to be released in 1992, but it's been cancelled, and the rom was still not leaked by this very day. However, some fans have translated all five games into English, and you can enjoy them with English words now.
- The SD in the title stands for super deformed.
