"Search and Do Not Destroy" is the 16th episode of Total Drama Island.
Plot
The remaining campers are off on a scavenger hunt for keys, and Heather kisses Trent in front of Gwen, destroying their relationship. Because of this, Leshawna tells everybody to vote either Heather or Trent off. After Heather gains immunity, Trent is voted off, but not before reconciling with Gwen.
Why Heather Should Be Destroyed In That Episode
- The episode nearly destroys Gwen and Trent's (Gwent) relationship with Heather simply kissing Trent when Gwen is around.
- Gwen also said to him "JERK!" while Trent said to her "USER!".
- Heather is VERY unlikable and at her worst in this episode as she kisses Trent right in from Gwen, gets invincibility, and then tricked the others to vote out the latter.
- At the beginning of the episode, Chris launches a cannon to the trailer Leshawna won in the previous episode "No Pain, No Game", which is just sad for the previously winning contestant.
- During the challenge, Geoff chose the key inside the toilet, which is gross.
- Owen saying "crap" many times ("no" in the edited version) can get you on your last nerve.
- While not as bad as in Action, this first send-off for Trent was still bad overall, especially since Heather basically tricked everyone.
Redeeming Qualities
- Great voice acting and animation as usual.
- The other characters excluding Heather are still likable in this episode, especially Gwen and Trent.
- Speaking of Gwen and Trent, it’s also heavily easy to feel bad for them after what happened this episode, especially Gwen, who was seen crying into a pillow.
- The kiss between Gwen and Trent was very heartwarming, and at least everyone realized Heather tricked them in the end.
- Gwen and Trent’s relationship wasn’t destroyed, and they make up, unlike what will eventually happen in Action.
- Leshawna gave Heather a hilarious comeuppance for kissing Trent, getting him eliminated, and ruining his relationship with Gwen. This comeuppance comes when Leshawna rigs the shower pipelines by connecting them to the sewer pipe while Heather is busy taking her shower, resulting in raw sewage spraying on Heather. While this does sound gross, the sewage spraying and Heather’s reaction are not seen and only heard as the camera continues to focus on Leshawna for the whole scene.
- At least Heather's trick about Gwen and Trent is better executed than Mal's exaggerated revelation about Courtney in Sundae Muddy Sundae.
Trivia
Continuity
- This is the first time Heather has won individual invincibility.
- Cartoon Network Canada refers to this episode as "Search and Try Not to Get Destroyed."
- This is the second time Geoff has been struck by a repulsive, lingering stench.
- The first time was in "X-Treme Torture" when he fell into a pile of dirty socks.
- This is the first of three pirate-themed episodes. The others are:
- "Mutiny on the Soundstage" from Total Drama Action.
- "The Bold and the Booty-ful" from Total Drama All-Stars.
- This is the first elimination ceremony where Chris does not stop handing out marshmallows to announce the bottom two campers, but instead hands them out all at once.
- It is also the second unconventional elimination in a row, as the previous episode lacked marshmallows and relied on confessional footage to determine votes.
- Although the teams have been merged, when Chris explains the challenge, the contestants sit with their former teammates:
- Bridgette, DJ, Geoff, and Duncan on the left as former Killer Bass.
- Heather, Lindsay, Gwen, Trent, Owen, and Leshawna on the right as former Screaming Gophers.
References
- This episode title is a parody of the military strategy "Search and Destroy".
- The vicious killer rabbit guarding Bridgette's key in this episode is a reference to the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog guarding the Holy Grail in the famous 1975 comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
- The leg lamp that Leshawna received from the treasure chest is a prop from the famous 1983 Christmas comedy A Christmas Story.
Goofs
- Izzy is missing while Chris explains the challenge but reappears after the campers pick up their clues.
- When Geoff gets his clue, the image on the plank is black and white. Later, when he is in the bathroom and the shot zooms in on the scene, the image is in color.
- When Izzy finds the snake, it has a rattle (indicating that it is a rattlesnake), but later the rattle is missing.
- In this episode, DJ is afraid of heights, but in the next episode, he climbs onto a roof and shows no fear. He may have overcome this fear off-screen in that episode.
- When Duncan asks what they are looking for, his nose piercing is missing.
- When DJ is first shown climbing the tree with the key, the branch is curved and bent and the key is very close to arm's reach; a few seconds later when he is on it, it is straight, and the key is further away.
- At the beginning of the Campfire Ceremony, Chris only has nine marshmallows, even though ten campers will be safe.
- However, this may be due to the fact that Heather has already won an immunity pass with a marshmallow picture on it.
- Also, when he starts handing them out, he only has eight marshmallows.
- Lindsay is seen with a reward after the challenge, though she claims to have lost her key earlier in the episode.
- When everyone is at the Dock of Shame following Trent's elimination, Duncan is layered over Geoff and Izzy, even though his feet are slightly above theirs, making it seem as if he should've been standing behind them. Furthermore, it makes it seem as if he was standing on Geoff's feet.
