Secret Mountain Fort Awesome is a 2011 American animated series created by Peter Browngardt. It aired from August 1, 2011, to February 17, 2012, on Cartoon Network.

Premise

Based on an idea from the animated short Uncle Grandpa, the show features underground monsters who are unleashed when a portal to the world opens. The monsters - Festro, Gweelok, Dingle, Slog, and Fart - struggle to find equality in the human world. Some of the adventures the monsters have include stealing the sun, fighting CGI sharks, wrestling, and getting beaten up by a velociraptor. The big question: Will the monsters and humans be able to live together in the same world?

Why It's Anything But(t) Awesome

  1. The "theme song" is too loud. It's not even a theme song at all, as its lyrics only consist of the words, "SECRET MOUNTAIN FORT AWESOME!!!", and ends with shushing.
  2. Awful and unlikable characters; the main characters, The Disgustoids are pretty lazy and are just your generic "group of radical friends who try to do cool stuff".
  3. Unfunny humor and jokes (for example, toilet humor and fart jokes, mostly from the character Fart).
  4. Laughable voice acting, especially with Slog.
  5. The art style and character designs are bland, very ugly, and visually unappealing. Additionally, they are unfitting for a show airing on Cartoon Network, as they fit more into an adult show instead, because the show was rerun on Adult Swim.
  6. The color scheme can look bad in some aspects.
  7. Strange plots, such as one where Gweelok builds a teleport-a-potty, and Festro and the monsters search for a place where pizza grows on trees but then get stuck in another universe.
  8. One of the characters, Fart (which is his actual name) is just a bunch of butts, which is repulsive! He also farts in one scene.
  9. The show feels more like an adult show rather than a kids' show, to the point where even its creator, Peter Browngardt thinks so, as this was the reason he decided to move on to Uncle Grandpa because he felt like that show was more lighthearted for children.
  10. And the final episode, "Secret Mountain Fort Werebaby", ended the series on a sour note.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The animation looks smooth and creative, despite looking grotesque.
  2. Fart (despite his appearance and the fart jokes he makes, hence his name) is likable since he’s shy, gentle, kind, and nice character unlike the rest of the Disgustoids.
  3. The end credits song is quite good.
  4. Some other funny moments for now and then.
  5. The show improved a little in season 2.
  6. The short that the show was based on (Uncle Grandpa) was adapted into a show that was much better and fixed most of the problems of this show, although the show is still forbidden from this wiki. See the list of forbidden pages on this wiki.

Reception

Secret Mountain Fort Awesome was panned by critics and audiences. It currently has a 3.2/10 rating on IMDb, and currently has a 23% rating on Google. Despite being panned, the show won three awards. Show designers Robertryan Cory and Chris Tsirgiotis both won awards for "Outstanding Individual in Animation" at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, and the show won the coveted Crystal Award for "Best Television Production" at Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the first United States-based production to do so.

It received a dishonorable mention on WatchMojo's Worst Cartoon Network Shows video.
